Edit: just realized that the figures Jazza got look very poor in quality and the box is missing the holographic logo, those are definitely counterfeit, there are LOTS of counterfeits floating around and their boxes look identical to the real ones, so be very careful! I used to have one, it was very expensive, then I started to use Clipstudio's 3D body for reference so I stopped using my Body-chan, I gave it to a friend who wanted to learn. Nowadays I don't worry about anatomy anymore and I just draw following my heart, sometimes my stuff turns out looking better than if I had a model, sometimes it looks worse.

I have and use both. Ironically the female is less flexible compared to the bulky male model. And judging by how extremely fragile your figures (especially the female) look, I'm not sure if they're the 'authentic' ones as there have been loads of bootlegs out there. I usually only use them when drawing characters in tough camera angles but they do the job quite fine. SH Figurearts did release some updated versions with supposedly better joints and more defined proportions, as well as more weapons/props, but they're hard to find in the international market.
@goro5479

@MadmanWithPie Im really glad I preordered mine online when they were first released back then. I really wanted to get the updated versions but I just cant trust online sellers nowadays because of all the bootlegs. Especially not from some random ad on intsagram.

I think theyre fake as well, the real ones are €80 and the ones he showed about €40. On aliexpress you can get em for €12 i think its just that bootleg
@LadyChickadeeful
@LadyChickadeeful 5 жыл бұрын
From what it looks to be the ‘body-kun’ website, it looks to be the official one. The reason why the price is 40 is because of a sale that ends in a few hours. They even have these limited edition ‘world tour figures’ of body/Chan-Kun painted with some symbols I can’t make out on them.
@goro5479
@goro5479 5 жыл бұрын
@@LadyChickadeeful I checked the site and I have to say that the authenticity if any of these figures are very sketchy. The chibi fig is definitely a knockoff since it has a figma stand (the body-kun/chan line is made by bandai tamashii nations). I have no way of telling if the other two are legit or not from the video but they seem to do what there supposed do and I guess that's fine enough if you aren't picky on things like that. Then again, if theyre selling cheap knockoffs for the price of an authentic one, that theres a different problem. Edit: After comparing the boxes, the ones jazza has are definitely bootlegs.

Looks like you ended up with Figma brand knock-offs. I've got them too, but my regular man and woman are the line that are as "budget" as your chibi figure. My man's right elbow join is broken after using them for like 5 drawings. They are definitely better than nothing for reference when I can't find a photo reference in the position I want, but they're not perfect by any means, and they are fragile and limited in flexibility, as you noticed.
@LittleRecordGirl
@LittleRecordGirl 5 жыл бұрын
Isn't Figma the Good Smile Company brand? SH Figuarts is the posable brand by Bandai, or similar figures. Though I do think he got bootlegs, other companies make similar figures. Bandai have different licences so occasionally you'll find characters as figuarts you won't find as figmas (eg Dragon Ball.)
@rouaneb6664
@rouaneb6664 5 жыл бұрын
Figma has it's own totally different figures, the "archetype" line, that is basically the base model of their other figures. These aren't those, and their ones aren't low quality. However there are a lot of knockoffs and remouldings of both, and I would not be surprised if yours and jazza's were those ones. 1st party body-kuns/chans have documented joint issues from what I know (did a bunch of research on them like a year ago, I have a pair from ebay that is nearly definitely a remould). I found I could just press the joints back together when they broke on mine but I haven't had an elbow break yet so idk

REVIEW; Professional (me) and Beginner (friend) I have both kun and chan and I can tell you that, when you are skilled in drawing proportions already, these will just be like training wheels; you might not really need them but it's good to have them anyways Is it worth the money? it depends if you're patient enough to position them, if you are a beginner that needs to learn/practice proportions and/or if you can really see yourself sitting down and actively using these since I couldn't find any use in these, other than not being able to find online references (rare case) but needing a clear view of what I got in my head because it's a complex and new pose (but getting frustrated after a while cuz the limbs arent flexible/durable enough) I gave them to a friend that just started off with proportions to try out and see if it works for her After she used them both multiple times, she says she would rather stick to online references, but it'd be good to have them as a guide for more complex poses (like I said) Here's what I take from all this: 1) If you're a beginner and need to practice proportions, then online references will suffide easy enough 2) If you want to try new and difficult poses, but you aren't good at imagining the parts where the figure might lack in posture, then this ain't it 3) If you ARE good at imagining parts that aren't "the right way wanted" (so you'd have to know how to draw proportions already) and you can't ever find the pose you got in mind online? Then go for it And also, if you can't decide on whether to buy kun or chan: buy kun, you can just draw him smaller and more slim-thicc (if you're going for that) and give him breasts, and you'll be gucci (And I personally use them for recreating dance poses and they are THE BEST CHOICE if you often times draw two people interacting with each other in a fairly complex pose, like ice skating f. ex.) Hope this could help, if you got questions, just ask right away :)

For the young starting artists I've gifted these too, I had them pose them, photograph, then load into their sketchbook, or such apps, then set a new layer to practice drawing in a trace process; setting light angles to study shadows, etc. in the photo step. It does help them with repetition to visualize angles, etc. On occasion, I myself do the same when I need a specific problematic pose of a rider on a horse. I also find these figures equally useful in miniature designs (dollhouses/vignettes)...the are perfect to lay with my designs sketches for furniture, layouts, etc when I'm drafting plans for building (ie scratch built prayer kneelers for a chapel scene). I find them very handy, thinking outside of the box, quite often.

But they do make cool shelf props, and I am actually using them for a project this week. I give them a 6.5/10, don’t believe the hype, just watch the video. I like the idea of having something for reference if I just can't get the pose that I want through my usual stick figure and basic shapes roughs...but just looking at them...i don't think they would be useful for most things...maybe if they were a little bigger, with joints that could be tightened/loosened (kind of like a high quality stop motion armature)...but, your using a camera anyway...just take a photo of yourself, or someone else (with their permission of course). I guess on the bright side though, Jazzaquin has some little friends to hang out with now!

They ^are^ fun and do help with proportions and specifics like... "how much of the foot would I see if...?" If something in your drawing doesn't look quite right then they can help suggest what might be wrong. Having said that... Mine are in my desk cupboard and they only come out when I'm reaching for something behind them. If I want a quick pose I more often use the little articulated Mega Construx action figures that I use for stop motions. N.B. I might have a different make or earlier model but mine do feel quite robust.

Jazza, thank you so much for doing this video. I saw these figures on Pinterest and wondered if they were worth buying. The Bad: I think figures like these would be better if they were larger and sturdier. And I wish the human muscular anatomy were more defined on each figure. The Good: Jazza, you pointed out how posing the figures would allow you to then draw the figures from virtually any angle, giving great assistance with perspective. However, I think you forgot to mention shadows. As you were turning the figures, I could see how the light was falling on their various curves. This could be very useful if you posed the figure, then photographed it with harsh side lighting. Shadows on the figure and perhaps the shadow the figure cast on its surroundings would be an invaluable reference. Overall I think I might be buying them. Or maybe wait until someone makes better ones. But clearly the idea is sound and there is a real need for them.

For anyone who wants to buy these for their own art: Get DesignDoll by terawell! It's a 3d posing program, and you don't have to have any 3d skills to be able to use it. I use it for all my drawings, and it's great for foreshortening and practicing different body types. You can fully customize the figure and put it in positions that aren't possible for a posing doll or in real life. The only downsides are that you can't add props (you can add a box, but not sophisticated props like guns or books) and you can only model one figure at a time. You can download the program for free on their website! (The only difference between the free and paid version is you can't save any files in the free version, so just take some screenshots of your model)

I've used the free version a bunch of times for complicated poses or angles, and I've had 4 models interacting at once. My biggest issue with the program is that the base pose for the characters is not good posture, and the rig is designed around that making many of the points of articulation around the torse break when pushed to any noticable degree- it takes a lot of finagling to get the model into any slouching sitting position.

I suspect that the male and female figures are bootlegs, and I definitely know that the chibi figure is. It's a bootleg of an Obitsu 11 cm body. They're normally used to make custom dolls, which is why they don't have as many hand options and why they don't come with props. I have two authentic Obitsu 11 cm bodies, and mine pose great. The joints are solid, and they hold poses really well. They also have magnets in their feet that help them stand on a metal disc they come with (you can also get ones without magnets, I believe). You can find authentic ones at Obitsu's website (also known as Parabox), as well as at online hobby shops like Hobby Search and The Junkyspot (not spon 😜). As for the Body-kun and Body-chan figures, there are other, more realistic figures made by Max Factory, in their Figma Archetype series. I've seen them on Hobby Search, and authentic ones pop up on Amazon now and then. Anyway, sorry for the novel! Hope this helps anyone looking for these, themselves! I considered getting a couple of these, especially to practice perspective and foreshortening. My characters always look like their arms or legs are just horrendously swollen instead of going into the foreground, lol.

Omg, these figures are so helpful because when you are trying to draw a drawing with multiple characters, it tends to be really tricky since they are interacting with each other.

This is why I like the newer Body Chan and body kun figures (that are the real ones and not these fakes, you’ve already noticed of course). As I was watching you I noticed you had acquired the previous versions copies. The newer ones (I own both versions and the realistic models as well) feel delicate but can take a beating and are WAY more easily poseable. Better articulation and range of motion are in the newer versions. I believe they are called Body Chan 2.0 and Body Kun 2.0. I hope you get the chance to check those ones out and give your thoughts on them.

I have the more anime proportioned versions of the Body-kun and Body-chan, and the build quality is much better than these, due to newer molds. I use them fairly often to check up on my foreshortening and to make sure that things are falling generally into proportion. Great video Jazza!

Yeah, those are way better quality because the ones Jazza got were fake :( theyre cheaply made counterfeit ones

Tbh, instead of investing into this stuff and making a pose you’re satisfied for HOURS, I’d rather do it the old way and just take pictures of my own body or look up other human references for practicing to draw poses and such. I don’t like tedious things like these.

And how do you handle it when it's a pose you can't physically do? Or if you needed an angle where you can't set your camera? I'm not sure why Jazza was having such a hard time getting them to pose the way he wanted, but for me fiddling with one of these figures for about 2 minutes gets results that work for me, and it's much easier than trying to hold myself in a difficult pose or getting unusual angles. But that really does come down to what your art is about, not so much what is better or worse.

Here's the thing, I want to draw women and not just men. I can find a lot of poses for women online, and I've been able to get cousins and friends to pose for me for a piece of art before, but I don't think I'll be able to get every pose I could possibly need

similarly to these, there's an app called magic poser that gives you simular models you can pose, add hair to, and even clothes (but the clothes are finicky) I use the app cuz I don't have moneyz...
