Emily Artful. I’m an artist, but my friends that I’m less close with were asking me at school today asking for art. I only did free art for my sisters and family. Also a free one for my best friend but they just were like, “this girl works like 3 hours on this art plus it’s using expensive supplies and have homework on top of a busy schedule, I’ll take one” and think they could get it for free. I was being very generous when I said they could get a drawing for $6. But no. They wanted it for free. Totally understand how you feel.

What's worse is PR people from companies and businesses ask me for free art work. They offer "exposure" and "reputation" for being associated with such a great company. After listening to everything they have to say, I tell them unfortunately my local grocery store does not accept "reputation" in exchange for groceries. If you know of a grocery store that will accept your reputation, please let me know. At this point, there's usually a long, long silence. I break the silence with "oh my, I need go grocery shopping to feed my family." That usually gets the message across. The really serious ones will call back with an offer.

This hits so close to home! I sew. The minute I mention that, people pile on the requests. “Will you make me a skirt?” “Can you sew my wedding dress?” “I need pillows for my couch, will you make them?” The awful thing was, as a young people pleaser I had not yet learned how to say the word no. But worst was my mother in law. She would hand me a big black hefty garbage sack full of her mending! Inside would be everything from threadbare nightgowns, granny panties with broken elastic and tee shirts with dissolved armpits. She’d also buy several pairs of cheap jeans for her husband and hand me the pile, saying “They need to be shortened 3 inches”. BTW, I was working full time with a baby in daycare and a neanderthal husband who didn’t help with housework. After a few years of this, I grew a pair of ovaries and would hand her bag back, saying “Sorry, I have a drawer full of mending I don’t have time for. But when my things get this bad I throw them in the rag bag or trash them” I also gave her the address of a dry cleaner who did pants hemming at $5 a leg. When she protested, I suggested she watch the JC Penney ads for sales on Wranglers or Levi’s, so she could buy the correct inseam length. That put an end to that! I love to sew and most often, my projects are gifted or sold. But listen up Bitches, do NOT ask me to dress your bridesmaids or fix your shit. Mmmkay?

But they pay me by helping me with school stuff (cause I have some classes I struggle with). But they ask it on Very rare occasion. The kids in my class ask ALL THE TIME (before quarantine). The artist take *20* hours to make the art, and you'll pay the artist *$20* an hour to make it. then the price of the art is basically more or less. *$450.* *$20 x 20 + $50 = $450* And also artist need money for living. @Someone so is your house not decorated with photos, paintings, drawings, anything that makes you feel happy when you look at it? God your comment is so stupid, do you know how much time some artists spend on painting? They do not just sit around all day... They are helping society stay sane and express themselves and enjoy themselves, the same could be said for actors and dancers so what are they not real jobs now either? Get over yourself lol. Maybe take a history or culture class and see how art and literature has shaped and affected cultures all over the world through time and even still today then come back and say art doesn't affect society.

My mom wants free art every Christmas/Birthday even though we have a strained relationship and I haven't shown her my art in years. And those times are the only times she takes interest in my art. She also wants the gifts to be done in realisim which isn't my style so she doesn't like my art she just wants a portrait for free. Also, from all my school art projects the only ones she hung on the wall are realism that I only did for a grade. The one time I did give her art as a gift I told her it would be in my style before I even started, she said that's fine. Then when she opened it up she said "Oh but I wanted realism."

My grandmother only wants me to draw in realism, everytime I I draw in my style she won't out right say she dosent like it but she makes it very clear. She only hangs up my realistic art and refuses to praise my art but constantly praises my friends art ( she does realism ) and tells me how I should draw just like my friend. It's so emotionally tasking.

I used to always make my mom stuff for Christmas i have done a few art peices and some i have built. Last year when my parents got a devorce my mom walked around our house and made a list of stuff she wanted to keep and nothing i made for her was on that list. She said that she didnt want anything not on that list. That years Christmas i mad her a sofa table for her new apartment and this year when i asked her what she wanted she asked if i would be able to take the table i made for her and fix it up to be a play pin thing for her new kitten. So needless to say i got her a fire stick.

As an editor, I get this all the time. "Hey, can you edit my book? I just finished it a few minutes ago. It's 50 billion words and the first thing I've ever written ever but it's going to sell more than Stephen King's books!" "Sure, here's my prices and payment plans." "Prices?! Can't you do it for free?" "No, sorry, it's my full-time job and I have bills." This is a bit exaggerated, but I get asked this or at least to lower my prices 'just this once' all the time, usually by people not from the USA. I get the exchange rate is high in your country but that doesn't change the fact my rent is still the same price. Obviously I'm happy to accept installments, but some people just don't quit.

Wow, I didn't realize this happened for editors lol... I guess half the population has that unfinished novel in their bottom drawer... I'm doing the first edit for my son-in-law, simply to help... There was a post recently that reminds me of this, where it talked about how if a woman does some type of art - any form - it's called simple crafts (hobby), but if a guy does it's fine art. It was mostly talking about things like knitting complex stitches, and creating things, but it seems to happen with people who do illustrations too.
