The reason we call them "pineapples" is because the first English-speakers to encounter the fruit thought they looked like pinecones, which at the time were called pine apples. The word "apple" originally meant "thing that grows on a tree," so the thing that grows on a pine tree was a pine apple. They thought this fruit was just a really big "pine apple" so they used the same word. Later, when the word "pine apple" was changed to "pine cone" there was no real reason to change the name for pineapple; because, at that point, the difference between the two was fully understood.

@thegrayskullpower
@thegrayskullpower Жыл бұрын
That just makes SO much sense. It can explain why the word for potato is "pomme de terre" in French (pomme = apple and terre = earth, so yeah, earth apple), as French and English have a lot in common (as a result of all the conquers and stuff). Also it is possibly the reason why everyone thinks Eve ate an apple, even when the bible never says so. It just says that she ate a "forbidden fruit". Never apple. So many questions, finally answered....
@Daelyah
@Daelyah Жыл бұрын
@@thegrayskullpower Happy to see I wasn't the only one having the "pomme de terre" epiphany. Also, for the "forbidden fruit" that Eve ate from, some speculations point to the pomegranate; the same fruit that tied Persephone to Hades for a portion of each year, after she consumed it.

because so many countries call it ananas, it's probably a borrowed word. in the language/place where the word came from, they're probably really common, since common nature things usually get completely new words as names (instead of borrowed words or compound words like pineapple) also if you're looking for more amazing compound words you should study finnish

@@ashcommittedarsonbutinasexyway ananas is a word that comes from Tupi, the language spoken by many native groups in the east coast of Soth America (more specifically along the Brazilian coast), from where pineapples are originary. It's interesting that in Brazil itself, it isn't called ananas, but abacaxi, another word from Tupi that is a sinonym to ananas.

Right? With a few exceptions (Group X, Sick Animation, Flight of the Conchords, and others I can't think of), I've rarely had good reaction to musical humor. Something about it just make me recoil-which I _want_ to do here-but the musicality outweighs the repugnance, so I'm kind of left scowling and hovering to escape, but never do haha

Pineapple originally meant (&/or was a dialect variant word for) "pinecone", but once the more edible fruit was encountered that name became most popular for the fruit. Interestingly, "appel" was a middle English and old English word for "fruit", more than for what we think of as "apple". In fact, when oranges were introduced to Britain, they were called "narange(s)" as often as they were called "chinese (or sinese) appels". Once upon a time, there were pineapple parties in which rich people would rent a pineapple to show it off as an extravagance during a party and it was taken to another party ASAP, as many times as possible before it rotted.
