The reason we call them "pineapples" is because the first English-speakers to encounter the fruit thought they looked like pinecones, which at the time were called pine apples. The word "apple" originally meant "thing that grows on a tree," so the thing that grows on a pine tree was a pine apple. They thought this fruit was just a really big "pine apple" so they used the same word. Later, when the word "pine apple" was changed to "pine cone" there was no real reason to change the name for pineapple; because, at that point, the difference between the two was fully understood.

In case anyone curious, "Apple" just meant fruit in old english. You had gourd apple (melon), finger apple (dates), even potatoes (earth apple). So it really was just "pinecone fruit)

It can explain why the word for potato is "pomme de terre" in French (pomme = apple and terre = earth, so yeah, earth apple), as French and English have a lot in common (as a result of all the conquers and stuff). Also it is possibly the reason why everyone thinks Eve ate an apple, even when the bible never says so. It just says that she ate a "forbidden fruit". Never apple. So many questions, finally answered....
