I almost took a drum lesson with Ralph Peterson Jr. in the early 1990s and I couldn’t afford the $50-$75 per hr. rate he wanted to charge but he was great to chat with in my inquiry process with him.

Thanks for demystifying something that looks much harder than it is. I've found that the key to playing fast in any genre is relaxation of the hand and overall body. I am just learning to play a fast ride and it is coming along. However, I've a little ways to go before I may be able to play it like you. Thanks again!

I'm still working on this technique but I am getting it down (finally). I've worked on it off and on for a while now. Thing is, I feel capable of playing some good jazz with the exception of up tempo stuff. I don't want to live in fear anymore of the leader calling an uptempo tune and me dying on the drums trying to keep up instead of setting the pace. This is THE technique that John Riley, Ed Soph and now Ralph teach. Get this and I'm ready to play with some playas!

@westyz86 I agree. I have problem playing fast on a cymbal which was taped. The sticks of course must be balanced. The other thing is that, we can't do the even out swung notes in two groups ( a single hit follow by a double hit). The two groups are the ones we normally use for a regular swing pattern. However we need to practice doing the even three notes with two group first to get the 3 rebounds to be even when we do it in one group.
@panplayer11 жыл бұрын
Great demo! I find that I don't need the little fingers to snap the sticks back up, unless it's a heavier stick. For me, the Vic Firth AJ6 seems to ride itself.
