Parra diddle-diddle: I'm a jazz drummer of little consequence here on the west coast. 77 years old. Shelly manne I believe pretty much pioneered that lick... filling in the spaces between ride beat s. I think of it as a Shelly Diddle. Would like to see him get at least some recognition for a lifetime of solid bandsman ship. I love what your doing. Keep it up!

Been playing drums off and on for years, but decided recently to take it seriously. Jazz is a style I've always wanted to play, and this lesson is great. I love the confident way he plays, the pulse of the groove just makes me wanna jump on my kit right now! Thanks!

The PDF is part of the actual instructional video. Would be on the DVD to download or also part of the online version. Available at our JAZZHEAVEN website (see link in description above). Wish we could give it all out for free. But then we would not be able to make those videos for you... (Had to rob a few banks to produce these videos ;) - we shot 31 so far, with many different artists, incl. Eric Harland & Ari Hoenig). Best, Falk

Mr. Ralph Peterson is GREAT!!!! PERIOD!!!! Since the very first time I saw him in the mid-eighty's, at Carnegie Hall, I've been CRAZY about his drumming. I applaud him for sharing with everyone, for free, the language of JAZZ DRUMMING. I own just about every recording this man has played on. And yet, till this very day, I still can't get enough of this man's drumming vocabulary! GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER!!!!!!!!!

The swing ride pattern is already taking care of the lead half of the para diddle diddle , so to achieve the full paradiddle diddle all he adds is one note (left hand) after the first of the swing ride, then two (left) after the group of two of the swing ride (right hand) R L RR LL

Great, but I fail to see the real explanation. I mean, ok, those are terrific exercises, but the question about comping is not answered: how do I choose what to do? Is it a randomish phrasing or does it have any sense and purpose? I understand it's all about listening to the other musicians, but still... The snare hand phrasing is based on what? Thanks. Great video anyway; that paradiddle-diddle one is crazy.

The starting point for any drummer wanting to play this style of jazz .... the Jim Chapin book Advanced Techniques For The Modern Drummer .... don't let the word "advanced" put you off , it breaks down exactly how to play any figure against the jazz ride cymbal pattern, you'll get all the syncopation you ever need and more just from going through this book
