WOW! This amazing, as a pianist at Von Maur, I can use this technique when children pass by and watch me play. I often start with Twinkle Twinkle and then go into What A Wonderful World when children stop by to listen. The melody stays the same, so I could probably apply these chords with What A Wonderful World. Thanks for the video and tutorial Kent Hewitt!

All this is like Chinese to me, and I do have a musical background. This is easy 5-10 years of hard, everyday work (piano practice) to fully understand the theory behind the chords and to be able fluently play them and apply these formulae to other songs. I've seen about a dozen videos of yours, you've certainly got my respect. You can tell when someone is doing it for the sake of forwarding knowledge, and that is why I just bought your book. Well deserved.

+Kent Hewitt Yes, to me this is the magic of jazz, the highest evolution when you can take anything and jazzify it to bring it to life. I was learning altetered chords and they just sounded horrible to my classical ear. No matter what I did, they did not sound like the nice jazz chords I was trying to copy. so I played them over and over again for months... then they started to sound right. I could hear something in them and now i understand their sound better. I have a long way to go in jazz, but with your help I can do it. Thanks again. :-)

You sir are an amazing human being, not to mention awesome piano player/teacher/mentor. As a guitar player I'm learning more from your lessons than I've learned from any other guitar players. I stumbled on your channel while looking for something to help me expand my harmonic sense. I think you would refer to it as developing my Jazz ear, lol. It takes an extraordinary human being to share the vast knowledge that you have here on You Tube for everyone who has that thirst for musical knowledge. Forever grateful, I salute and thank you sir.

Thanks, Jennifer. I actually resisted doing this requested video, just like the Happy Birthday. But they both turned out to be more popular than most of my other videos, maybe because of a larger perspective. If you play piano, try out my easy lessons or beginner jazz. Thanks for this link Kent. I shall try your tutorials to run in my new Yamaha keyboard. This looks like more fun than conventional theory and will help keep my brain ticking over.

Although I didn't really get anything beyond the second step, this was the sickest tutorial I've ever watched. What a great idea to demonstrate all of the techniques on the simplest of songs and progress further step by step, and so well thought out and eloquently at that. Keep on doing what you are doing, this is amazing stuff!

Hey 31337air....You're a hip dude because I use the same word : "sickest" to describe something that no other word expresses better. Your analysis of what I'm trying to do is "right on", and so you are a true brother. Please write to me.!

A SUBSCRIBER'S BOOK ENDORSEMENT - "Mootrevo" just wanted to do a shout-out for your book; People, I’ve been using Kent’s book every day for over a year, and it’s a work of art. If you like Kent’s playing and the way he explains jazz and music harmony, and the songs he chooses as examples... then RUN, don’t walk to Kent’s website and get this book. He IS far too modest about this amazing jazz workbook he has created. It is simply the best I have ever used, and I’ve tried a lot of them. It has improved my playing and understanding of jazz theory tremendously. I can’t imagine any student of jazz piano and/or jazz harmonic theory not liking this book. It’s simply that good. It’s fun. It’s straight forward. And unlike so many other jazz books, it’s not boring!! (sorry for the immodesty, if you want my book, but can't afford it, write to me for special price ...KH).

Excellent!! just absolutely Fantastic!! I learned so much in this video and understood them completely, especially the triton substitutions, rootless voicings, and jazz phrasing, they were my favorite. I love how you address each skill levels as well!! Request alert: I want to see your interpretation on the jazz piece "Body and Soul" displaying, voicings and improvisation, and so on in any key.

Thanks! I'll put that on the TO-DO list. Most of these subjects I've covered in previous videos...please check out my list: kzbin.info/door/dmjw5sm9Kn83TB_rA_QBCwplaylists

What a beautiful evolution of harmonies. I wonder: can it get any more 'modern' or should we start moving to sparse and open minimalistic shapes that retain the modern jazz sound's essence.
@KentHewittpiano888 жыл бұрын
We can go more modern or minimalist. I tried to show the basics in this and make it practical...I needed more... less advanced material.

I really like your explanation style, and thanks for the free download of this. I took the Tritone substitutes and color tones from looking at your hands on the keyboard and played 4 bars, then played the reharmonization with rootless voicings for another 4 bars. I would give anything to hear your jazz colorations for the second section. Again, thanks for your well-needed lucid and well thought out lessons.

Thanks very much Kent, I stumbled on one of your videos by accident today and realised that this is very handy for me! I'm a pro sax/flute player/guitar player, but I've just started trying to learn piano more seriously. It's so much easy to see what the concepts on the piano - I think learning some piano will improve my sax playing immeasurably. Thanks again for your great videos!

I would say that good jazz theory can explained best from the piano... so anyone playing a different instrument would learn helpful information by studying theory from the perspective of the piano. That's what they do a Berklee.
