Summer of 1965. I'm sixteen, alone in NYC, looking for Ornette Coleman. I attend a concert at MOMA. Sonny Rollins with Billy Higgins on drums, Henry Grimes on bass.. Unforgettable! Higgins had the absolute minimum viable drum kit. He was astoundingly inventive.

I too agree that "Mr. Billy Higgins". is a very underpublicized and underappreciated CD...I am still stunned that too few know about this classic album...

This song was in constant rotation on Eric Jackson's show on WGBH radio in Boston back in the day. I worked second shift and listened every night. One of my favorite post-1960s recordings.

This song was written by bassist Bill Lee, Spike's dad. I hope Spike finds a place for at least part of it in one of his films. This is my favorite version by far, although the ones mentioned by others featuring Clifford Jordan are very good. Also, check out the version by the sextet One For All featuring Eric Alexander from their Album Upward and Onward

I was fortunate to have net and been befriended by Abdullah Kareem (Billy Higgins) in the early 80s and talked to him before his death. He was a very kind and pleasant person to be around.

+magovenor I never talked to him but I did see him perform in a club in Annapolis, MD in the early '80s. Everything I've heard about him indicates he was a great person. He was sometimes referred to as "smilin' Billy Higgins". I was at a jazz club in Inglewood, CA and was told that it was Billy's club that he had started before he died.

Inglewood? I left Los Angeles in the mid 90s, he had a club in Leimert Park which is in the southwest section close to Crenshaw Blvd. The club was named "The World Stage".

+magovenor I'm sure you're right. I dont know LA that well.

If you get a chance to go around Leimert Park, you should be able to talk to some of the shop owners close to the club and get some insight, as well as Marla Gibbs had converted an old Seven Days Adventist Church into a place for performing artists and plays.

+jazznik2 do you have any other videos/ uploads where there is a bass solo played by the bassist in this recording? or can you tell me of any other videos where he solos if you know of any please, I've tried to look him up but can't find much. great recording and enjoyed it a lot. :)

+Annie Mooney No, I dont. He's pretty well-known, tho, so I'm sure he's recorded other solos someplace. Glad you liked the tune!

Very nice version, but do yourself a favour and listen to a classic version of this tune by the great Clifford Jordan on his "Glass Bead Games" album (with Stanley Cowell, Bill Lee and Billy Higgins) and on " Night of Mark VII" (with Cedar Walton, Sam Jones and Higgins). Not to be missed!.....

Glass Bead Games is essential! You're absolutely right! Everyone should hear that one!

Is it possible to put the whole album up as a complete album as it is no longer available (unless you fork out thousands for a Japanese copy). Then we could download it to listen to it properly. !t's amazing jazz.
