Jazzy Jay is a legend of hip-hop. As a DJ alongside the iconic “master of records,” Afrika Bambaataa, his experiences in the early days of hip-hop are a true insight into a culture forming.
In this lecture at the 2007 Red Bull Music Academy, Jazzy Jay recalled those early turbulent days with reverence and enthusiasm, from digging for records to battling Kool Herc.

In the days of a burning Bronx and gangs roaming the streets, Bam organized the Zulu Nation while Jay assembled the sound system. As part of the first generation of DJs to be born of the culture, Jay’s digging and selecting skills informed not just those who sought to emulate him behind the turntables but also those who began to think about producing hip-hop.

Salute to "DJ Jazzy J and the Jazzy 5 emcees. I always enjoyed the parties and the tapes. For the record, The Disco Twins didn't come out of suburbia Queens but Astoria Houses, aka 'God Houses'. I had the privilege of witnessing the both of you, during the 79'-84 era. Phenomenal. ✌👍💪 Thanks for the post.

@@soloist9495 hiphop is disco, rock, pop, country it's a fusion of everything.. of course King Mario is part of hip hop. Bam used to borrow King Mario's Sound System, he had the best sound in the BX.. DJs were cutting & mixing Disco & everything else..Mario is part of that.

I have a lot of respect for Dj Jazzy Jay and his involvment in the Hip hop culture but he 's twisting the truth a little too much when he talks about rich suburbians from Queens cuz Queens is not a suburb but one of the 5 boroughs of NYC just like The Bronx is . Again , when he talks about his youth as a Black Spade member but he mentioned the 2nd or 3rd division , if he really was a member, he definetely would remember with accuracy the division he was in .

Most families that caught a lick and was ready to buy a house and come up out the projects or apartment buildings did in fact move to Queens. Small pockets of Queens in the late 60's and early 70's had gangs like Bricktown and New York Blvd which became Guy Brewer Blvd. Hollis had a lotta knock out artists and live wires too. The dope epidemic touched Queens as well but for the most part, the rest of the 5 boroughs looked at Queens as better off because they had a lot of private homes. Even they projects was better off than Brooklyn's or the Bronx. It was more working class families in Queens. It was a false perception because black folks was struggling out there too.
