Schatt&Morgan/Queen (1895-2012) and then later GEC (2006-now) carried the slipjoint market during some of the slowest years and toughest years. 2020 is when all of my GEC inventory started flying off the shelves. Shortly after 2020, you have JWK in 2021/2022 along with RRR that brought a new light to "modern" slipjoints. Now with RCB and what Finch and I can bring to the market, it definitely makes the market a lot more fun and allows more options for collectors and users alike!

Back in the day, I had one folder. It broke. I dusted off an old Case Trapper and carried it exclusively for a while. I loved the thin blade stock for slicing. But slip joints aren't as convenient in and out of pocket, so I carry em both now. Great video!

I came up with slipjoints but got away for a while. Juhvon gave me the Brother 1510, that's in my pouch pocket right now. That got me back into the slippie rabbit hole where I found Rosecraft. That's all she wrote. Totally hooked.

I received my first (actually second) slip joint knife today. A RRR038 hawkeye hawkbill. The first one arrived 2 weeks ago with rust around the nail nick, and deep scratches on both bolsters and the bone on the non-show side. SMKW paid the return shipping and the replacement arrived today. On first look, I thought it was a winner. No rust. No scratches. No gaps. No blade wobble. And then I felt the proud bolster transition into the under-contoured bone at one of the four transitions. The knife is great other than that. But now that I've been watching this channel and a couple of others, that defect is going to bug me every time I get this knife out of my pocket. I have to keep telling myself "I got it for $38. As cool as this knife is, it may get relegated to garden duty. THANKS for the video and this space to vent, JB!!

@@BigRedEDC Discovered today that the blade has A LOT of side-to-side play. Enough to scrape either liner. It's headed back to SMKW. RRR is now for me what Case is for you. I'm disappointed. RRR knives look good, but in my limited experience, aren't good.

Great talking point and being my age for a long time only traditional slip joints were available, I liked carrying a lock back when they became available still my favourite but now can't carry them out of the house because of UK laws, personally I like modern materials and screw construction just as much as old school manufactured knives, I don't have any expensively made knives my most expensive being a GEC, happy with budget knives on the whole, that is the beauty of knives on offer now something for everyone.

I started with slipjoints, and never stopped liking them😆But I can definitely tell over the past few years that there's been a boost in their popularity. Plus, there have been alot more options (like you showed) for people who want to carry a slipjoint but want something more modern looking. Also, another budget option for someone who would want to try a sod buster style knife is the Imperial IMP22. Back when I bought that knife I paid somewhere between five and ten dollars for it, and it punches way above its price point. Great video, buddy!

I am happy to see slip joints come back into favor. I have carried a slip joint of one kind or another for years on a daily basis and will continue to do so. The quality of the steel and fit and finish is what I believe is the main factor on their rise in popularity. People will tend to spend their money on quality and some of today's makers are providing just that. Thank you JB for another quality video that I am willing to spend my time on!

I think stringent knife laws might be a driving force in slip joints. They are legal to carry in more locations than modern one hand openers /assisted opening, etc. It is even why Spyderco came out with the UKPK and the Roadie. You know me. I've been a traditional slip joint guy all along. I have nothing against the modern folder I just don't have the need for it and I like the old slippies. Favorite of the budget brand is probably Rough Rider but there are many to choose from. I really like the Victorinox Swiss Army knife. Is that a budget knife? Depends on the model you pick up. I really haven't jump on the "modern slip joints' wagon. I find many of them some what bland in styling and over priced. But then I'm a cheap old fart.

I carry both a slipjoint and a modern daily. A slippie is a fantastic answer to the question, "Do you have a knife?" I don't have to explain how to close it, because it doesn't lock open. And the occasional knife-averse person finds them less of a problem for some reason. About half the time it's a SAK, and always when it's my only pocket knife.

JB, this is a great video and topic.. really interesting to talk about and cover in a video! I think there may also be an increase in people collecting slip joints that need to be refurbished. I see a lot of YT channels doing videos on older slip joint knives they purchased at a flea market, pawn shop, or antique store and then restoring them.. I agree the more modern traditional knives may have helped as well. For budget knives, I like Rough Ryder and Queen the best. Again, great video and I hope you have a great holiday season!!

Also, I think there is a resurgence in slip joints because the rest of the knife world is becoming stale and repetitive in my opinion and people are getting tired of knives that are thick behind the edge and don’t cut well. In the slipjoint world, you can still find good cutting geometry.
