I used to be a manual only guy, but I had enough of rowing gears all day in my old Toyota and got the auto for my Jimny. Great decision, it's so good and easy off-road and in town. I do miss the manual on the open road, but that's why I have a motorbike. Would highly recommend the auto.

From Darth in Oz. Thanks for this very useful, objective video, and also, for other videos in your series on the Jimny. I really relate to your frank, sincere, and knowledgeable style. I'm an 80 yr old ex-South African, ex-off-road motorcyclist, now retired- been living in Oz for 25years, I'm selling my great 2012 Toyota FJ cruiser and recently bought a 2022 Jimny demo model (manual), as part of the inevitable downsizing one does when reaching this age and stage of life!!. The Jimny is such a capable "mini-me" little vehicle - just right for some nostalgic off-road fun and running around for the shopping etc... Keep up your great work. 👏👍

@@justjimny My offroad use in my Jimny in England are a lot different to those l saw here, the terrain is usually soft fields and mud and these the Jimny handles well (manual version), climbs are not a problem, usually done in low 2nd, descents in low 1st is usually okay as the use of brakes would almost certainly result in loss of control and possibly tipping over, new lower ratio low range gears are now available for this Jimny and would really make a big difference, my SJ 413 LWB had 6.5:1 low range and with ARB difflocks out performed my Defender 90" Td5 over all types of terrain. A diesel engine conversion would also really help the Jimny offroad.

Thank you for the awesome video. At first I wanted to buy a manual, but decided on an auto. Friends owns an older model Jimny and I saw and experienced sand and rock driving with it. Also done some off road driving with series 2 and 3 Land Rover. I decided on the auto, as it is my only car. Easier to drive in traffic and when I go fishing on weekends, sand and rocks are not an issue. Also way less wear and tear on the clutch plate for the auto. Great Video! Really interesting comparison. I'm a Manual SZ5 jimny owner in the UK, I completely agree that the biggest downfall of the jimny is it's lack of engine braking on steep traverses. I've found it's quite unnerving taking on a steep decent in the jimny because of the short wheelbase, that combined with riding the brakes and feeling the car skid/slide. If only there was a way to re-program the vehicles hill decent speed control... The jimny is otherwise an epic little off-roader, love mine to pieces.
@justjimny
@justjimny 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunatly the only way to get them slower on a downhill is reduction gears , but they influence normal gearing as well , so start practising your downhill braking a bit , thats part of the fun in the jimny🤣
@clooperman3745
@clooperman3745 2 жыл бұрын
@@justjimny The problem with the Jimny is low range is too high and the small gas engine doesn't give much engine breaking, the first problem is easily fixed by fitting lower low range transfer gears though it will also lower high range as well, if the Jimny had a diesel engine the standard low range would be okay for most offroad situations, here in England a lot of offroad downhill sections have to be driven without using brakes or to do so would result in the wheels locking up and losing control, that's why Land Rovers are good because they have good low range gearing and good engine breaking , even the gas engines.

Hey great review. Could I ask what the revs difference is in a manual vs auto when cruising at/on highway speeds like say 110kmh?
@justjimny
@justjimny 2 жыл бұрын
Both run hi revs when doing 120kph , mine is just beliw 3500rpm , abd the auto about the same. Suzuki has hi reving engines that provide most power at high revs , they are very lazy when you drive them like diesels and bigger petrol engines. They are very tough engines that are designed to take a hammering 24/7.

Reviving an older video but I would like to ask a question. I can’t find the source but recall that there was issues with the auto box overheating(as you mentioned). When last I checked it was apparent that you can replace a clutch kit on the manual but there was no rebuilt kits available for the auto box ( Had to buy new box @ R125 000 ? approx). Has this changed? I decided to opt for the manual version as I am planning to keep my Jimny for the long term and not sell it before, or when gearbox issues shows itself. ( I do hope and trust my info is correct ) I truly hoped that I made the correct choice as an auto box was my first choice.

I have not encountered an auto or manual gearbox that has failed. The main concern is that when you towing a trailer , adding extra weight , you may encounter overheating. Like mentioned the chouce is still yours and make it according to what you plan to use your Jimny for. Still happy with my manual and its almost on 60k km , no mechnical or electrical issues.

I would suggest to make up the concluding list by first putting on top what is important for you and on the bottom what is least important. This way you give weight to the conclusions. For example towing I do not care about, so it doesn’t matter to me this is in favor of manual. Same thing for push starting. I do not see me doing that on a unhardened road and on the street I will charge from an other car. I will put on top the driving performances, first the off road and lower the on road performances. But it is as said in the video an individual choice.

Great video! Does your Manual Jimny have hill start assist? In Australia it's listed as a standard feature, I just wonder if by stalling and/or using the handbrake it is negating the hill start assist system. Cheers.
@justjimny
@justjimny 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daley , I utilize hill start assist with normal city driving , but while off road , I specificly swicth it off by using the handbrake , since rolling back unexpectedly on an obstacle can put you in a very bad situation where you can roll your Jimny or cause a lot of damage , so rather trust your skill than the electronics while offroad.
@daleyb93
@daleyb93 2 жыл бұрын
@@justjimny That makes perfect sense! Did you find from experience that the electronic hill hold feature did let you down? The auto seemed to hold really well, though I wonder if the torque converter was playing a big part in that. Thanks for the reply :)
@justjimny
@justjimny 2 жыл бұрын
@@daleyb93 Best thing about the auto is , it can not run back at all , since the gearing in the gearbox keeps it from running back , like a manual that is in 1st gear with the engine switched of , its going nowhere. The hill start assist just switches off too quickly , and while off roading , you may have wheelspin with no forward movement , and that can put you in a bad situation where your only option will be to stamp on the break and let your engine stop to prevent you from rolling back uncrontrolled. Then apply handbrake , place in reverse and switch on your car and still with your foot on the brake start decending in reverse at a controlled speed. 4x4 drivers in the know call this a reverse hill start , and all manual 4x4's should practise this way of reversing down steep hills if they could not make it to the top. Touching your clutch will cause you just running down the hill uncontrolled.

The manual Jimny needs a Clutch Start Cancel Switch like all four of my Toyota 4WD trucks (1998, 2007, 2009, 2010) have had from the factory, even the one that didn't have any Offroad package. This Clutch Start Cancel Switch allows you to start the engine in gear or in neutral with out depressing the clutch pedal. So when I stall climbing a hill in low range, I hit the Clutch Start Cancel Switch while turning the key, starting the engine in gear as truck starts to climb I give it some gas and off we go ! No clutch work, no getting off the brakes because I never put my foot on the brake pedal and no handbrake. I am a little taken aback that any Offroad oriented vehicle with a manual transmissions would not be equipped with this vital feature. I may choose to own an automatic transmission vehicle one day, for a specific purpose, like if I lived in New York City, had to have a leg and an arm amputated, lived where sand was prevalent or plowed snow professionally instead of just my own driveway. Ps. I will always choose a manual transmission for my own personal use in any weather conditions where I live in north eastern New York State, be it -15°f (-26°c) and coated in ice and snow or 98° (36°c) with rain and mud .
