Jeff takes you on a visit to the Sonora Masonic Cemetery in Sonora, Calif., the queen of the Southern Mines, where lots of graves date back to the 1850s, 1860s, 1870s, and 1880s. Some of those people include two men who knew Mark Twain when he spent time on Jackass Hill and the man who provided the last rivet -- made of gold -- to complete the Golden Gate Bridge.

Jeff, I especially enjoyed your journey around the Masonic Cemetery in Sonora. I’ll have to visit the two graves of pioneers, Mr. Dick and Major Balls. Thanks to you, they will not be forgotten! 😆😅🤣. I enjoyed your historic research of Sonora. My mom and dad spent their honeymoon in Sonora, 75 yrs. ago. I appreciate all your vintage photos. They aide in your factual commentary. I’ll bet you taught Ken Burns that technique! Lastly, the country music that you used at the end was great! Keep on that trail, Jeff and Sarah! We enjoy your travels so much! Breakfast is on me if I see you at the Velvet Grill!

What is so sad within 50 to 100 years after we die no one will remember us. However, a few of us seem to like to visit cemeteries and do a little research. Which you are now doing, More and more people are now being cremated, soon cemeteries will be things of the past. Lord help us if down the road soylent Green comes true. :) That said, I am a Christian so to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Amen :) So we really don't die. we just go live somewhere else.

Another thoroughly enjoyable "history lesson", thanks for the GREAT episode. And speaking of digging graves in the rocky ground; your grandmother told me some years ago that when she was young, she recalls the ground in her home state of Oklahoma being so rocky, they had to use dynamite to blast out the holes for the graves.

Thanks for that explosive insight! I heard that back east the ground gets so frozen in the winter that they have delayed burial until the grave could be dug. At least that's what happened with my great grandfather on my dad's side.

Yeah it would be kind of strange to look out the kitchen or living room window and see large grave markers and an unruly cemetery. It's possible that I could in the near future but for the time being ... check out my Stockton cemetery video. I visit the grave of Louis Hickman and talk about him as the founder of Hickman.

The two people you are looking for could be buried at the cemetery up by Bald Mountain Road. Mountain Shadow Cemetery is the name of that one. There is also a cemetery at the corner of W. Jackson St. Might want to look there for those ones. They also could be buried in Jamestown or Columbia.

More about the Segerstrom family. I have no idea if they’re related but there are still Segerstroms here in Sonora. Kate Segerstrom is a judge here in Sonora, and her son-in-law Sam Segerstrom is a sonora high tennis coach and a real estate agent

Have you checked out liberty and Elliott cemetery in acampo? It would be great if you did a video on those two. I guess a lot of kids were buried in the liberty cemetery and some of the graves are under the freeway.

LOL, the location of Mr. Dick and Mr. Balls couldn't had to have been on purpose. That would have been some coincidence, don't you think? Thanks for the laugh. I wasn't expecting that :-)

I've gotten more comments about that section! Ha ha! I doubt if it was deliberate since we're talking the 1850s and 1860s (they had more class back then) but as I was crouched down there and saw the two last names side by side I had to laugh. Thanks for watching, Steve! Hope all is well!

Great video. My great- grandpa was a Mason. He immigrated from Denmark and passed in 1974 at 96 years old. A Masonic funeral is long. I thought Catholic funerals were long! He is buried in Oakland.

I think Lucy grabbed that tree she lived up to her name. I dont know if it would be politically correct, but I sure would like to a cable camera inside those little holes just to see if the coffin was visible. Might of been very ornate but then it might of been wooden. And those fences they were all hammered together no welding back then.
