The Scossa's are an old ranching family in the Carson Valley and their ranch is nine miles south of Genoa on foothill road. They still run cattle below Ebbett's Pass on Hiway 4 south of Marklevile in the summer. Never knew of the Snowshoe Thompson connection. Very cool. There's a marker where his cabin was in Diamond Valley.Also there is the Cradellbaugh bridge over the Carson RIver on hwy 395 in the valley. Your history vids are very informative. Good job!

I've been around my share of cemeteries in the West and Genoa's has some of the most unique gravestones I'd ever seen. And it's sure nice to see my home mountains, the Sierra Nevadas, again. Always meant to attend the regionally famous "Candy Dance" but never got around to it. It's also nice the beautiful deer came out for Sarah!

There is so much to like about this episode. A cemetery full of interesting and influential people and amazing headstones. I really enjoyed the drone footage which showed the layout of the cemetery and how well maintained it is. If you haven't had the opportunity to read "Devil in the white city" I highly recommend it because it's full of interesting historical facts including the story of the Ferris wheel. I'm looking forward to your next episode.

Another great video of history in Ca./Nv.. I thank you for pointing out the beautiful headstones, iron work and the personal stories attached to them. The cemetery is void of grass which is understandable in that area but is certainly well kept. Keep up the good work. I don’t normally go into cemeteries but this was a good show. Very interesting what you said about the large block of stone where they used to hitch the horses. I enjoy metal detecting and I’m going to look for those in different places, old trees are a good place as well. People getting off and on a horse are bound to lose some change.

Please visit the Stewart Indian School near Carson city. Very old buildings there. We visited it last weekend. It made me cry. I'm Native American, and the stories at the museum had me crying like a baby. The school closed in 1980 with a happy ending.

The dogs name is Joe. He was buried there before my Grandfather, Gordon Holmes, passed away. We always drop off a dog bone when we pass thru.

Interesting pic of Snowshoe Thompson's house. Never seen it before. When I went exploring Diamond Valley, I just guessed at the location of his house, because nothing remains. I noticed an irrigation ditch went all the way to the back (SE) corner of Diamond Valley. There was very little flat land there to irrigate, so I guessed that's where the house was and the ditch was his domestic water supply. Sure enough, that's where his house is in the pic. Is interesting that the ditch no longer flows and the big trees are also gone now.

You have got my wife and I going to old cemetery and enjoying the history of pioneer and everyday life and death. We were just in Jackson cemetery and found the graves of some Italians killed in the Argonaut mine fire killing 47 miners.

They have a very old bar there. As I understand it, it's the oldest saloon in Nevada. The wife and I enjoyed a beer there. It is definitely worth a visit.

It's sad to see such young children dying back then as well as today. I lost a cousin to leukemia when she was 10 back in 1975. With the medical advances today, she would have a 90 percent chance of survival today.

@@jbenziggy Yes he did volunteer, it was amazing..he was going to get married and his young fiance said she was sick and tired of waiting for him to come back from the mountains and gave him an ultimatum : her or his postal service work. He choose the work, said the people needed him---it was the only way they could get their mail and supplies. She married him anyway !

There was a Boy Scout Camp at Lake Audrain. Sometime in the 1940s there was an outbreak of polio. I believe one Scout died. The camp was closed and later moved to the upper end of Upper Echo Lake and named Camp Harvey West. It closed in the 1970s due to lack of participation. Harvey West was, I believe, a Placerville lumberman who may have financed the move.

I am with Sarah, it looks more like a "C" than a "G". Also Jeff, Port Huron Michigan, my hometown, has a paper factory started by the Dunn family. The headstones and a statue are unique. The look like wood logs with a smoothed spot for the names. If you go to Find A Grave, findagrave.com, and put in Dunn and then click on Isabel, you will see it. The whole original family are all there with their own "log" stone. Also Thomas Edison's parents and siblings are there too. They lived there and he worked in the mail car on the train until he was fired for doing experiments on route and almost or did start a fire with them. Click on his mother Nancy. There is a large half circle monument area that they are all in, but I can't find a pic of it. I live on the other side of the state now so I can't go there for you. In the 1850s, Mormon leader Orson Hyde did name the town after the Italian city of Genoa. I can't say why he did this. Perhaps he'd traveled to the Italian city and developed a fondness for it. I do know he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem so it's possible he also visited Europe around the same time - or at some other time in his life.
