I strap the JBL Xtreme 2 to my bicycle frame when I go out and do 3 hour rides pumping bands like the prodigy and drum & bass. So far its been very successful at energizing grumpy old people to shake and wave their fists at me! I can't hear them but I think they really love the music ;-p

The Extreme 2 has a stronger bass insert, but the xtreme 1 is cleaner and more accurate in its presentation ! The big bass makes the extreme 2 a bit of a muted tinny. If I were buying for music , I would definitely choose the extreme 1 which has a more faithful presentation !

Great review! I have them both and listening to them both on my galaxy s9 on battery power and no equalization, it sounded (to me) like the xtreme had slightly lower bass response and achieved slightly higher overall volume but the xtreme 2 sounded much more balanced, full, better with vocals and mids. In my opinion the sound quality alone does not substantiate buying an xtreme 2 if someone already owns the xtreme. However, if you're one of those whos xtreme's battery is dying, and/or you're intent on using it close to an open water source, and/or you demand slightly better vocals without using an equalizer application, and/or you have other jbl speakers with the connect plus feature and youre absolutely intent on connecting to them (pulse 2, flip 4, boombox), then an upgrade will suit you. Otherwise you're not getting a whole lot more in getting the xtreme 2 over the first generation, at least not $300usd worth. But that's just my opinion.

The Xtreme 1 got boomy upper bass and harsh treble which makes it great for outdoors, but if listen to a lot of music indoors and care about sound quality the Xtreme 2 sound is much more balanced and nearly hifi with deeper bass.

I had the JBL Xtreme and I had a lot of problems with the battery after about 1.5 to 2 years in. I sent it out for after service and they contacted me and offered to replace the xtreme with the xtreme 2 for an extra $100 so I went for it. Now waiting for it to arrive but this video makes me much more excited to get it.

Thanks for this review. It was very detailed and I like the fact U included the differences between the plugged and unplugged sound difference. Ur point regarding wanting louder sounds on an open environment is spot on. I share the same sentiments. They should just incorporate a bigger battery instead of decreasing the sound because people expect this Xtreme2 to be louder at least a few decibels up. Ur review is solid gold. Love the review but the xtreme 2 is quieter because it emphasizes bass a little more than treble. Every new JBL speaker is going to do this. You can easily adjust the sound with an equalizer though.

Super review friend! Always on point yours! I really don't get what JBL did here woth the Xtreme2. They had 3 f*c**n years to improve the Xtreme and honestly, they just gave it some standard upgrades like IPX7 akd connect +. I really don't get why they didn't imrpove the battery life or made it louder. For me, as a JBL fan, this is probably gonna be a turn off and and I'll buy the pulse 3 or Charge 3 onstead since I already have one Charge 3.

Yeah 20Hz instead of 55Hz on the low end would have really made a knock-out difference in the Xtreme 2 bass, you can seriously hear a difference between 20Hz and 70Hz compared to 55Hz and 70Hz. BTW, One of the BEST reviews of comparing these two I've seen all over KZbin - instant subscribe! ( I honestly went with a $140 used Xtreme 1 because Xtreme 2 is just too new to break the $300 price tag right now. In person it honestly sounds incredible, beyond the quality of recording it videos. However the Xtreme 2 will indeed sound better for sure.)

i hate how everyone says "20Hz would've been better" it would of, but in reality, it is impossible to reproduce. heavy subwoofers have a hard time reaching 20hz, let alone 25.

it's all physics brother, 1) If you have speakers with response at say 20Hz then the speaker enclosure volume would be way much bigger to be able to get a decent/useful Sound PressureLevel at around 20Hz, i.e. audible at that frequency, which defeats the purpose of the device being portable 2) It is also possible generate to low frequencies at smalll enclosure volumes however we trade efficiency to achieve that result meaning the device would consume a whole lot of power, i.e. shorter operating periods while on batteries,

I had the JBL Charge 3 & loved it, but started having the same battery problems you just talked about!!😳 I was charging it every 1/2hr when I would use it, or would have to keep it plugged in all the time...sometimes that wouldn't even work, which is why I'm looking for another speaker & was considering the Xtreme 2. But after you just said you had the exact same problems w/the battery on your Xtreme I might consider a different brand all together! Too bad, I love how their speakers sound!!😔

In term ou sound quality, I would go with the Xtrem rather the Xtrem 2. The overall sound, especially at 100% seems louder and stronger on the Xtrem, where the Xtrem 2 seems saturating a little bit.

What would have been good to integrate in the JBL2 is a small solar panel strip . So you can keep that constant power level up, instead of just relying on your batteries, and the circuitry that is constantly adjusting it self as the batteries are loosing its charge due to using it at a high volume!!!

Excellent review! Mentioned what others have missed-double sound power output on AC versus battery and how that makes for a dis-favorable comparison versus original Xtreme. Like the frequency response tests and the noted personal experience with the battery charge level issue on the Xtreme (that could only have come from having and using the product over a long time as opposed to a quick studio test).

Just to clarify, the Xtreme speakers don't have USB charging, because it needs a 19V and 3A power supply. USB won't be very useful there, as it can't handle that kind of power and most USB power sources won't deliver 19Volts at 3Amps...

The jbl extreme will reproduce all the hz notes that the extreme 2 can play. Just put it in the bass mode. My battery on the extreme is great. Watching the vid the extreme 2 had a flat eq band that I liked better. Just for kicks I played this vid on my extreme..... Btw....a company could say speakers this size can play 20hz but it isn’t going to happen. I appreciate jbl not stating false specs.

The reason for not having a 5v usb charging port is because the internal rechargeable battery is 7.4 volts. You can't charge a 7.4v battery with 5v usb power. Unless a less than 5v battery is used. But then the speaker will not sound as loud. Louder sound requires higher power. Higher power needs higher voltage and higher current. That's the reason for the JBL Xtreme not having a USB internal battery charging port.

Although, each of the devices has two main speakers and two tweeters - but unfortunately the outcoming sound is not stereo !!! You get the same sounding from each speaker. However, the situation is different with other devices like Sharp GX-BT480 (for example) - (the product has approximately the same power, but with a lower price) - with this device you get a rich, clear and voluminous stereo sound! Of course, you need to make the necessary frequency settings of the player from which you play music in advance! For some users, this does not matter much (all that matters is how big is the sound), but for music connoisseurs like me this is a great advantage!

Aether i think the problem is from them making it water proof. I wish JBL would make something only on the splash proof side so the sound quality wouldnt be compromised. Not everyone would be throwing their speakers in the pool. Splash proof would be fine since most of the time it will just be beside the pool where it will just get splashed. Same problem with their charge line thats why i bought the charge 2 plus instead of the newer versions because the sound quality is much better and its still splash proof. Dont need the ip68 bullcrap. Not everyone owns a pool and would be swimming all the time.

2:49 i have to point out man but that port provides more voltage than micro USB. And if it were charged by micro USB it wouldn't be as powerful as they are now its pumpin like what 20w of power. but thp usb c cable as same as laptop usb c would work tho but u camt charge it form you phone charger even if it fits voltage too low phone takes typically 3.8-5Volts of electricity and that speaker around 14volts cause the big speaker drivers need more power than a small phone.

if you really want max loudness, then put it i a power bank when you are outside and there you have it! together with increased running hours. Maybe even "brigding" USB Power out and in would word. The Extreme would be thinking it's charging a phone while beeing charged by AC, still it should output full power while suffering losses because of the power conversion. Still a good hack for unlocking full Volume for short periods of time like outside for 1-2 hours with only a small 20cm cable
