In the 70's I was a long haired rocker kid, rock and heavy metal, ABBA was a chick band to be made fun of, fast forward 35 years later I explored ABBA and was shocked at how many songs I remembered and how great this band is, as we get older scenes and styles can be crossed without fear of getting your teeth knocked out LOL. Then I find out that a large proportion of my rock and metal gods are also big fans of ABBA. I am in a good plce now hehehe.

My husband and I had almost all ABBA music played at our wedding reception back in 1997. It was awesome, with a lot of dancing. :) (Edit to add): I remember the first time I heard this song. I was around 12, and was sitting in the backseat of our family's green Thunderbird, coming back from fishing with my dad and his best friend. We were just coming down the road to our house. As soon as I heard it, I was mesmerized and asked my dad to turn the volume up. Then I made dad and Major Root stay in the car until the song finished. I was hooked on ABBA at that point, and received my very first ABBA record from mom and dad that following Christmas. I am now 48 and still have that record sitting in the cabinet of our family room. :)

Talking about ABBA's popularity this is taken from Wikipedia: With sales of 5.5 million copies, Gold: Greatest Hits is the second-highest selling album of all time in the United Kingdom, after Queen's Greatest Hits (1981, 6.1 million units).[4] In August, 2019, Gold: Greatest Hits became the longest-running top 100 album of all time, spending 900 weeks on the UK Albums Chart. The album spent 62 (non-consecutive) weeks in the top 10 and topped the British chart seven times, most recently for two weeks in 2008 following release of the motion picture Mamma Mia!.[5] The Beatles' Sgt Pepper album is the third highest selling album of all time in the UK and they are from the UK.

I grew up on ABBA. Really like the genuine joy you seem to have listening to their music, it makes me re-appreciate the magic of their sound. Their music from around this period could be so joyful, really wonderful! They were really diverse though, depending on which period you listen from. Their last album ‘The Visitors’ was quite a departure (and a few non albums tracks after that) but absolutely stunning in a different way. The Day Before You Came is one of my favourites, pure melancholy but so fantastic! I encourage you to source everything they did, including the unreleased demos. Theirs hardly a blotch on their repertoire!

ABBA was groundbreakig. This video is first-rate! The camerawork, lighting & the concept are all way ahead of it's time - a full three years before MTV. In the disco era, ABBA was the top-earning group in the world (yep, even more than The Bee Gees). They built a state-of-the-art recording studio that was so "alive" sounding that Led Zeppelin chose to record In Through The Out Door there, which would be their last studio album and which created the chimey, deep sound that would characterize the music of 80s

Many very big artists cite ABBA as a large influence on their music. ABBA is brilliant. Watch a doco or two on their music and you’ll appreciate even more how good they really were. Benny & Bjorn were genius song-writers, and Agnetha and Frida were the voices - perfectly attuned to each other. A very well oiled intuitive music machine.

They got buried under the "Disco Sucks" backlash, but ABBA wasn't really "disco", it was just great pop music. Their musicality got lost in the era, and I say that as someone who hated disco -- and therefore ABBA -- but seeing them now - without the blinders of "contemporary issues" (which died around 1983) -, I can finally appreciate how amazingly talented they were. As writers(Benni)/lyricists(Björn) and performers (Agnetha [pronounced Anyetta - roughly] and Anni Frid [Frida]) - the B ,B, A, A of ABBA

Thanks for having the appreciation for all these classic songs! Another good one to check out is "Next Time I Fall" by Peter Cetera and Amy Grant. It's a mid 80's ballad that made it to #1 for good reason! (And since we're on Abba here, Peter Cetera also did a duet with Agnetha Fältskog called "I Wasn't the One Who Said Goodbye")

I have a similar response when I Pavarotti sing Mess in Dorma. I love this piece. Tears stain my face as I write this post. Even when I hum it something happens to me. It touches my soul and soars to the Heavens. I am a person of colour who did not have a whole lot of experience with classical music early in my life, yet I appreciate it now so very much. I can definitely relate.
