The Huel powder is good. It’s not just vegetarian but vegan and nutritionally complete so it has all your macro & micronutrients. If you buy the original you can always flavour it with vanilla or coco powder or coconut flakes to mix it up a bit.

Been binging and loving your videos. I had that same realization recently about how much food makes a difference! Backcountry skiing, I've started carrying two water bottles, one that I add Crystal Light flavor power-type stuff, but with caffeine. A few cups of coffee worth throughout the day makes me feel much better! I've also added summer sausage to my day trip snack list. Maybe a bit heavy for overnight trips, but it's fantastic for getting some fat and dense calories.

I've started carrying protein balls made with vegetarian chocolate protein powder, peanut butter powder and oats. light, tasty, and a great fuel source. Good for lunch or a snack.

Nice one, hope you like it! Deffo nicer with milk but I like it made with water too. I tend to make it a little thicker than Huel suggest.

Thanks so much for all these videos. They’ve really helped to brush off the cobwebs before getting out on the rock this year. What sort of target do you aim for with calories day to day and when you are climbing? Assuming you need a bit less than when humping a load of gear around the hills on an ML course? Cheers!

Absolute pleasure :) For the sake of simplicity I keep my calorie intake the same each day under normal circumstances and it works well with the mix of work / climbing / training.

Thanks for sharing your ideas and thoughts in this area Jez. I'm a big fan of powdered mash potato (with cheese) to complement the Exped Foods beef hotpot - lush! 🍲

Lockdown has given me plenty of time to experiment with snacks at home... Adding nuts and seeds into homemade honey flapjack is a winner, and making nut 'brittle' by melting baking chocolate and mixing in assorted nuts. Honey roasted peanuts in dark choc or salted cashews in white choc are both awesome. Leave to cool then break into chunks

Great video mate! Completely empathize with you in regards to wishing a pill could take care of it 😅. Was a chef for 15 years and I can't summon the motivation to cook complex stuff in the field. Give me instant convenience stuff any day! Besides, I'm not out there to muck around with food, I'm there for the Adventure. I have friends who carry raw veggies and all kinds of kit...but geeze, what a right pain in the butt. No thanks hahaha!

You are right, the key is making sure that you have three decent meals for each day and fancy what you are carrying. Otherwise after a tough day some people cannot be bothered to cook a decent meal or just rely on a sugar hit. You have some proper cook books in the background Jez. I didn’t think that you did real cooking? 😂

For snacks, I tried and am converted to a baby puree by 'Ellas Kitchen'. They do a Banana & Coconut in a pouch like a gel. 177Kcal and really tasty. Just breaks up eating savoury or bars all day.

B&M do 75g flapjack bars for 19p and 120g for 29p! and they're good. Last ages and don't melt like chocolate can. A scoop of protein powder (chocolate) in your morning porridge adds cals and protein, obviously. Makes even plain porridge palatable with just water. Noodles can be made so much better with the addition of a Pepperami, especially the red ones or even the black... On the subject of pepperami, they have a lot of oil so are great to slice into a small pan before cracking an egg in, instant omelette! Obviously if you're carrying eggs you want to protect them, Asda do food boxes in a 5 pack that perfectly fit one of those plastic egg holders, or just rip the lid off a cardboard one, pad them out with a few sheets of kitchen roll and you'll have zero washing up. Aldi sometimes have tiny square 'one-egg' frying pans that are perfect for turning straight out onto a slice of bread. Apparently the 'Look what I found' meals are great, soft packets like the precooked rice you spoke about, not tried them myself yet. I avoid Myfitnesspal these days as it keeps telling me i'm eating too much...

Got to love flapjack in the hills (or anywhere!!) Pepparami / chorizo is a bit of a staple for me if I'm not using Exped Foods type stuff. The LWIF meals are pretty tasty, just heavy and they need a rice or something with them. I used to use them quite a lot for one night type things :)

I don’t tend to carry fresh ingredients on the hill it’s more when I’m car camping but I find a good way to carry eggs is to crack them into a plastic screw top beaker, I think mine are Addis but others are available. No danger of them getting squashed and you can just tip out whatever you need or if you want an omelette you can just shake the beaker and then pour it out.
