Things I forgot to mention:
1. The legal situation for using Neem Oil / Azadirachtin is quite complex. I might do a separate video on this at a later date if people wish for it.
Neem oil isn't technically a registered / approved pesticide in the UK. It is approved in the EU under EC Reg 1107/2209 (sitem.herts.ac.uk/aeru/bpdb/R.... There are numerous research documents discussing its effects and impacts, which conclude that by and large, it is safe. A good summary can be found in this document produced by the US Environmental Protection Agency: www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_...
2. BUT Neem oil is NOT banned in the UK. This is a rumour that was started by someone editing the wikipedia page for neem oil and getting a few details wrong. Because the active ingredient isn't technically approved for pesticidal use alone, it is necessary for products containing the active ingredient to go through a process of individual approval. There are examples of products containing azadirachtin which have been approved for the UK market. More info here:
(webarchive.nationalarchives.g...) Using the mixture as I describe in the video is considered a home remedy and using it at a small scale is likely permissible under UK law in the same way that many other home made garden remedies such as garlic sprays, compost tea, spraying milk for mildew etc. are allowed.
More info here: www.hse.gov.uk/pesticides/use...
3. Neem oil absolutely stinks so be careful using it indoors or in greenhouses and try to avoid getting it on yourself or your clothes!
4. Neem oil can be really effective for potted plants, by making up a solution in the same way that I've shown in part 4, and using it to water the plant.
5. Neem oil solidifies in cold temperatures and can be harmed by high temperatures. If you need to liquefy solidified oil then place the bottle in warm, but NOT HOT, water.
I hope you enjoy this one, probably the most work I've put into producing & researching a video!

We have a lot of neem trees in our neighborhood and I have one in my backyard. We usually boil the leaves and drink the solution to treat many conditions. It's actually some kind of herbs which is good for our health but it is extremely bitter. If you drink this neem juice once a week or two, even the mosquitos won't be interested in sucking your blood.. Haha. We usually use the same solution to spray on our garden too. I don't know about the fruit/nut though. So I cannot testify whether it has the same effect or not.
@MrChacings
@MrChacings 2 жыл бұрын
So I think spraying neem oil to our plant does not actually harms the insects. It just that the plants suck the oil and make them bitter, those making the insects lose interest on them. Neem oil in heavy concentration does contain poisonous substance for microbacteria or even the delicate roots I believe..

Hey JB Cutty Shark, You have to make a mixture of 2.5ml litre of water. and you should sprinkle on plants either early morning, or evening as it breaks down in the heat of sun. its very effective when applied accordingly, and you should repeat the treatment every 14 days.

Great video JB. By the way, I have been using neem oil for years and it's really effective. It's perfect for prevention (1x/wk spraying) and in case of infestation, I spray every 3 days. Depending on the infestation, you may need to spray 3-4-5 times. But it does save the plant and kills the disease. Again, kudos to you.

@JBNat
@JBNat Ай бұрын
Yes good points. The salads I were spraying were a bit of an experiment because they were so aphid invested. The brassicas are early enough that I wouldn't be eating the leaves (and a lot are broccoli). People are mixed about this, some say if you wait 2-3 weeks to eat it then it's fine, others say once you've sprayed you'll always taste it. I've personally switched to drenching the soil (have another video on that) which makes this not an issue :)

One of those plants in particular was never the same, it got completely fried, the buds didnt form right the leaves looked like golden yellow and crispy even when the new ones grew in. It got so fried. You definitely wanna use real soap as they call it or castille soap. Dish detergent can absolutely fry a plant.

Everything I've read seems to indicate that in the diluted form it's fairly non-toxic after spraying on your vegetables, and if you are washing the vegetables after harvesting, prior to eating, then you should have no worries. Pure neem oil is toxic if ingested which is why they warn against having it around when children might have access to it. Hope that helps.

@v.j.l.4073

I just tried it for the first time today. My research has turned up that the oil will not last for years, as you said. It actually degrades in a year or two - UNLESS - you refrigerate it, then it will last longer, but not for a really long time. It thickens when it gets cold, and thawing and cooling a larger quantity degrades it also. So what I have done is bought small 1 oz containers (about 2 T) that I can portion it out into and refrigerate those, so you are thawing only a dose at a time and not refrigerating and thawing the same oil over and over. Freezing doesn't work - ruins it.

Lots of people say different things! It's safe for humans to eat, but people always recommend a few days generally. Thanks for subscribing! It definitely depends on the specific pest. It's very good for some soil-Bourne beasts such as fungus gnats. But I don't think it would work too well on something like big fat beetle grubs. Same answer for the molds as well! It really depends on the kind of mold. Hello! Honestly it's difficult to say, some people say yes and other people say no! I think it depends on the type of mildew and the plant that it's growing on. I know that my spraying did nothing to deter the PM I had on my Courgette plants, but they are EXTREMELY susceptible to it. If you do use it specifically for PM then you should try and do it very regularly, maybe once a week, and it's always best used as soon as you see a problem starting, or even before, as a preventative measure :) Good luck!

How interesting, neem was developed and cultivated in the tropics of India, so it might be that it's whatever you mixed it with or the time of day you applied it that caused the damage.

@@JBNat Hi JB. Maybe you can help me. I used like 3 hands of only neem leaves, dry but still green. I boiled them for about 20 min in 1 gallon water. I put some of neem liquid in a clean windex bottle spray. Further I added 4 small tea spoons of liquid dish was soap. In end 1 table spoon of olive oil. Shake well and spray. Before I spray again, I shake it. Hope I did everything good. Greetings from the Dutch ABC Caribbean islands.!!

I'm no expert, (only used pre-made oil!) but it could be the dish soap which is the main culprit for causing the leaf damage - it damaged a lot of my leaves when I used it which is why I added the disclaimer in the video about using natural or castile soaps instead! Good luck with your trees!

Is UK trying to ban natural products that rival their chemically produced ones? Now this comes up on my search: "A search on here shows that neem oil seems to be this subs go-to for aphid issues, however, it appears to be banned in the U.K. due to its concerns it could cause infertility, abortions or liver damage in children (all things I'm keen to avoid!)."
@JBNat
@JBNat 3 жыл бұрын
@@snakeheadparadise Hi, very complicated subject. I found the reddit thread you're talking about. The main reason that pesticides containing Neem are banned is because of the associated risks to children and pregnant women. The two studies cited on wikipedia (Meeran et. al & Bhaskar et. al.) are both concerned with direct ingestion of pure neem oil. This shouldn't be a concern when using the concentration described in the video. I can't ACTUALLY find any source saying that neem products are banned in the UK, but I think it might be banned for use in creating products. It's certainly not illegal to buy or use it, although the law is kinda weird on this stuff. From the HSE ( www.hse.gov.uk/pesticides/user-areas/garden-home.htm ): "Part of the legal definition of a plant protection product takes into account the intended use of the product. For example garlic extract sold as a foodstuff doesn't require authorisation under plant protection product regulations but garlic extract sold as an insecticide does. In practice this means a number of own use home-made remedies such as beer traps or coffee grounds fall outside the scope of regulations." Interestingly it is approved as an insecticide under EU regulation 540/2011 ( www.legislation.gov.uk/eur/2020/1293/2020-12-31/data.xht?view=snippet&wrap=true )

@JBNat
@JBNat 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James! As far as I know it doesn't degrade over time, it's a bit like vegetable oil in that regard. It might be less potent over a timescale of like 5-10 years? The important thing to note is that it does degrade when you mix it with an emulsifier - so once you've got a mixture in the sprayer that will only last about 8 hours before losing effectiveness.

@JBNat 3 жыл бұрын
It's a good question! The EPA in the US produced a research document which I've linked in the description and that specifically talks about soil impacts and organisms like earth worms. It concludes fairly strongly that there's no impact, but I don't think it has looked at micro-impacts. Although it degrades readily and quickly I would just exercise caution when applying it, and not use too much.

Hi jb naturally jb is your name do you not want to do everything naturally? Using neem oil is altering the natural process in the garden isn’t it? I can see it has its purpose if you use things like that. But we need good and bad insects to keep the balance. So it sounds ok for those who use these things but we don’t use anything or fertilisers because we want a well balanced eco system. But that’s our choice.
@JBNat

Everything we do is altering the natural process in the garden Mandy! It's very difficult to draw a line between what is natural and what is not. I am not a fan of using man made insecticides, fungicides, pesticides, etc. which kill everything. But neem oil is just about the most "natural" solution I've found! You can see a bit of the literature review I did on its safety in the description too. The fact that it only impacts things which eat your plants is such a winner to me.
