This is the very first song I ever read the lyrics to and almost burst out crying reading them! Paul Weller's words are like poetry...this is the type of shit we should be learning about in English!

I have loved this song from the day it was released! I love the 'outro' it gets me everytime, I learnt to play it on guitar many years ago and surprisingly it is not that difficult, but in doing so you come to realise that although Paul wrote it , the importance of Rick and Bruce's contribution in crafting it into the masterpiece that it is , should never be overlooked! A timeless classic! dx

The outro to this song is the best piece of lyric writing ever. ''Coz they've took the keys and she'll think its me'' has the effect of an electric shock.

This is a really harrowing bit of lyric, somehow managing to spiral from bad to worse as it goes along. Even more brutal is how clear it is that the beating he takes won't be the end of it. "'Coz they took the keys, and she'll think it's me..." Holy hell. A top song from a very strong album.

"They smelt of pubs, and Wormwood Scrubs, and too many right-wing meetings..." Unfortunately, the pack mentality, in combination with misdirected frustration, exists everywhere. Part of the brilliance of Weller here is that he captures the underlying sheer pointlessness and randomness of the goings-on. Could have happened to anybody -- whoever crossed paths with these hyenas -- but that night it was him. Great bit of art.
