In our last video we started our 1800cc stroked engine build for our 1971 Super Beetle. We continue the engine assembly by dropping the crankshaft, camshaft, bearings other engine internals into the case half on our stand. Then we’ll drop the opposite case half in place and get the short block torqued together.

I knew of a guy took barrels out of a corvair engine offset ground the vw crank for small journal Chevrolet rods and made a big bore stroker engine. Produce quite usually the Chevrolet rods are longer for the torque.

Once the 2 shims are inside the engine case, the distributor drive gear can be slid in. Then install your distributor (with the cap removed) and rotate the rotor until it points in the correct direction for the #1 Cylinder. For Type 1 and 2 engines, #1 will be pointing towards the rear right of the engine (or 4 to 5 o’clock). For Type 3 engines the rotor will point towards the front left of the engine (or 8 to 9 o’clock). We only mentioned the differences for the original distributor versus the aftermarket distributor as the positions would be 180 degrees opposite.

you can put a Oil tremp sender where the Pressure relief Scew goes , I never knew that Plus Ive never seen the full Flow Kit like that that utilizes the front One I will have to look into that Cheers

We used Lucas Oil Assembly lube generously throughout the engine during the build. We find it negates the need for “special” cam lube but you can use your experiences and preferences to build to your methods.

Can i install the 2 shims of the distributor after closing the case?

Yes they can. That being said, it is much easier to ensure that the distributor timing gear is correctly installed by setting it in place before the crank is dropped in.

You can search “Gasgacinch alternative” and come up with a few alternatives. The only other thing we’ve personally used besides the Gasgacinch is Yamabond, but we still prefer the Gasgacinch.

wouldn't the aviation permatex on the case bolts change the K value for torque?

Maybe, but that is what VW did. We figure they knew what they were doing when they set the torque values so we just follow what they recommended.

@@BasedBidoof No problem, our engine was dirty but even after cleaning we could see staining on the block from the original sealant. You can see a streak below the center lower main studat the 6:00 minute mark. That was from VW. When we were doing the live filming, I even narrate that bit saying how you could see the drips from the factory sealant. You can see as I point to it in the video.

It can be, yes. It does tend to be a bit thicker than GasGaCynch so we prefer it over the aviation sealer on the case halves.

I started on VW's at age 14 and eventually built engines for several shops then had my own shop doing mostly engine rebuilds . Aviation 3D Permatex is Great and what I started with but later went with GasGacench on the case halves, silicone on the oil pump mounting gasket ( NO sealer on the oil pump cover gasket - only engine oil rubbed on the cover and pump flange) then use the Aviation 3D on the pushrod tube seals - be sure to have the seam on the tubes up so no chance of oil leak if the tube splits at seam.

Yes, regardless of the crank (we actually use a 74mm stroke crank in this engine) the case torque is the same.
