Disassembling just about anything is simple, it’s getting it back together afterwards that is the hard part! Either way, our tech goes over disassembling, and then covers the reassembly of the vent wing windows for our 1971 Super Beetle Project. This was a little more difficult as we painted our frames black but the same processes will apply for stock, chrome plated and polished assemblies. It will just be easier since there is less worry about scratching paint!

I use to live down the street from the Hawthorne Ca store back when i was a kid , way before i had my license. i use to loiter in your store asking tons of questions , bothering the staff every visit. lol knowing one day i would own my very own VW . Fast forward to today im 47 and owned around 12 VWs , Street or Cal Look bugs several Baja's even a fast back from 63 to 72 and currently have 72 Superbeetle on 17 inch Fuchs 90s Honda Prelude buckets 16oodp and vintage roof rack , and still ordering parts from JBugs matter of fact i got and order coming in a few days thank you and to find all these helpful videoes you are making on youtube Thank you again they are very helpful keep them coming,

Ah, my Friday fix is back! :) Did this on my '68 last summer. Saw a tip to use high quality black silicone caulk instead of sheet rubber when installing the glass back in the frame. Works pretty well!

I just replaced both mine and I have a small gap up top that I have to assume is just from new rubber. Closes at the bottom, seals 3/4 of the way up, but the glass just doesnt have enough leverage to finish the seal. Yours had it in the video as well, should I heat up the straight piece of rubber near the top to try and shape it, or will it gradually fit better over time?

Once the frame is installed in the car, everything looks good and seals well.

hey Sam, can you tell me what adhesive you used for the weather strip? also where I can source the rubber (weather strip) for the vent wing glass replacement step and the rivet for the swivel -> doing this on a 78 camper

Hi there! I need to replace the lock on my window as the main “disc” part broke off. Is there any way to take this off and put a new one on without completely taking it apart?

Yes, although it isn't exactly easy to describe. Inside the knob there is a coiled spring with an inner and outer leg. The inner leg aligns with the post on the lever and holds tension to keep the knob in place. If you were to pull the plastic center cap off the vent wing lock knob (assuming you buy a new one) you can see the alignment and can remove it. Then it can be installed on the original lever.

Thanks. It’s the dist. That came with the car, so I plan to use it. I just don’t understand what it’s purpose is? I will check to see which port actually pulls the rod when applying a vacuum to it, and use that port. Or does it apply pressure to the vac. Advance, to return it to no advance?

The port away from the distributor body advances the timing, the one towards the distributor retards the timing.

We haven't done any videos on a convertible yet, the vent frames on the 1965-79 Convertibles are a much easier to work on. The upper pivot is a screw, so there is no drilling needed and the vent wing seals install in the chrome frames much easier than the standard Beetles.

Got a question? My bug has a distributor with two vacuum ports. Carb is a pict 28. With one vacuum port. Does the one vacuum port on the dist. Need to connect? Or plugged?

A dual vacuum distributor shouldn't really be used with the carburetor but, if you want to use it, hook up the port on the outside face of the vacuum unit. The other can be plugged.

When I was removing my passenger side assembly, the mounting bracket on the channel track that attaches it to the door snapped off. Any recommendations on how to reattach it?

It might have to be welded or brazed back in place, it depends on the bracket. Sometimes though, just getting a new or used replacement might be easier.

Great video, Sam. I’ve watched the whole series and am looking forward to the final. I have 2 questions: 1. What paint did you use on the chrome (and was there any sanding prep)? 2. Can the pivot bar at the base of the window be replaced. Mine broke off and the window can’t be opened now because there is no bottom stability. Thanks for the tutorials!

The chrome on the vent wing glass frame was sanded down to rough up the surface before painting with Krylon Fusion Paint. For the upright, I used matte black sticker vinyl. The lower round pivot post isn't an easily repaired part. I can't recall if it's brazed or riveted in place, or perhaps both. Either way, you'll probably want to get a replacement.

I've been looking for a vent window replacement in black (which is impossible to find) or chrome but if you can find them they are quite expensive. I'll keep on the hunt. The "painting chrome" question was actually for pop out windows. I got a good deal on chrome ones (and black are impossible to find for this too).

@@timinjapan3836 I've never seen black pop out windows. They have aluminum frames though, so painting them would be easier. Additionally, you could have them anodized black.
