I saw that house when passing through Joplin. (This was in 1987.) When I got to Joplin, I called the police department and said, "I know this is going to sound strange, but where is the house Bonnie and Clyde stayed in?" The man who answered the phone didn't make me feel like I'd asked a strange question at all; he just told me where the house was, what it looked like ("Look for the house with the red door."), and how to get there. I guess he was no longer surprised by hearing that question. When I got there, I snapped a few pictures. As I was doing that, a young couple was walking up the street, and the fellow said "Hi!" and I said "Hi" and he said "Bonnie and Clyde, huh?" And I felt a little embarrassed and just said "Yeah." And after chatting with them a minute or so, the girl said, in sort of a quiet, sad, far-away voice: "They killed my uncle." (Maybe she meant "great uncle.") I noticed, in looking down the hill, that the house is near a highway. And later I learned that Clyde chose the house for that very reason, so he could be miles away in just minutes if it came to that. I was also surprised at the difference between the real house and the house in the movie, which is a good distance from the street and also hidden by a tall hedge-row, while the real house isn't more than ten or so feet from the sidewalk, and no hedge.

It was a good film, but they took quite a few liberties. They appeared to have the 'feel' of the era, and Costner and Harrelson are proven old pros, but some key scenes were embellished or totally fictional. For example, they have Bonnie walk up to a wounded policeman, blow his head off with a shotgun, and then laugh. Reportedly, she never even got out of the car. That's for starters.
