That was a great video James. I have done quite a few smaller gensets. I don't recall the pot under the cover. How many generators have that Pot?
@throwbo3 жыл бұрын
Almost all modern generators have an AVR with an adjustable pot - usually the crescent shape style seen here. However, the adjusting screw is on the INSIDE when it is mounted to the generator so you wouldn't see it unless you had reason to remove the AVR.
@jcondon13 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bruce. Most generators with an AVR have that adjustment. The older ones have no adjustment and the voltage is purely based on the engine speed. The video I posted last week was an example of one without an AVR. Voltage was at 135 volts. Had to slow the engine down a little.

We have used the kzbin.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

YOU ARE KILLING ME!! I have that exact same model. It has been neglected for 6-7 years. Last time I tried to start it, I had gas shooting out the air cleaner. Research showed it to be a stuck float in the carb. I decided to tear it apart and replace the carb. I didn't take any pics or video on how I disassembled it. Now it's 2 years later and I sit here looking at that heap of parts and bolts wondering how it all goes back together. When I found this video I thought you had answered my prayers. You started to dismantle it with removing the gas tank, side panels and then the cover to the air cleaner. When you discovered it was a battery issue you stopped there. I was hoping to see a tear down right up to the carb and then assemble it again. UUUGGGGHHH! Love your videos. Hoping to run across one that will explain my issue. Until then its back to the puzzle.

These are great generators! We have the 17,500 version. I have a bit of a funny story to tell 🤣. Our power went out with the heat while I was at work. My wife calls and says she and the daughter are burning up in 100 degree temps. I walk her through starting the generator and think nothing of it. She ran my extension cords in the house. I get home and the power is still out after 3 hours. She has a fan going, the TV, and an 8k window unit. My daughter is mad because she can't play her PS4. I asked the wife why don't you plug everything up? She said I was scared of overloading it with the window unit 😂. I said baby, this generator can basically handle everything in the house.

I have an mobile emergency generator that I would love to never use. Most people don't buy one of the 8kw units unless they need it (now) or buy it in case of emergencies. A 4kw unit is so much easier to move around for things like camping, and sips fuel.

Remember that it’s important to follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your generator. This is only a safety reminder. ⚠️Here are the generator safety tips: 1) Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards. 2) Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3) 🔥generators cause fire hazards too. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) generator operation; make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2LNhWZ3g6qBrKs and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps

As someone below said you can put a different style cable on it, if it continues to get worse. An old style throttle cable would work perfectly. You pull it to the desired position and twist it 1/4 to 1/2 a turn and it will lock in place. You could then lock it in the choke open position; or, anywhere in between. They are generally generic, cut to length; cover and core. They were used on diesel engines and similar, back in the 70's and 80's when I was a mechanic. Very likely less than $20.

⚠️Here are the generator safety tips: This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety. All generator safety rules need to be followed carefully 1) Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate the portable generator.

I doubt that there was an QC problem at the Generac factory. 99% of the problems happen because of the abuse that these generators get when they leave the factory - people leave them outside in the weather, they keep old fuel in them, they monkey with things when they don't know what they are doing, etc. This generator showed signs of all of the above.
@fromagefrizzbizz93773 жыл бұрын
@@throwbo Frankly, what I see here is user abuse, and design deficiencies for maintenance and repair that wouldn't get caught by QA/QC. There's NO WAY that battery should need to be jammed in like that. I know that SLAs don't need to be right side up, but hell, why do it if you don't have to? Why jam it in so it requires major disassembly to replace it? I have an 8 year old GP6500, also Generac. Getting to the battery to replace or charge it is trivial.
@throwbo3 жыл бұрын
@@fromagefrizzbizz9377 I agree that the battery on this unit was poorly placed. I don't know what they were thinking. There's plenty of room to put an upright battery on a tray at the bottom level, next to the genhead. It could be worse - on the new inverter Predator you have to take the whole case apart just to change the air filter.
@fromagefrizzbizz93773 жыл бұрын
@@throwbo I remember such. One of my mom's cars required removing frame braces to get at the oil filter. Then again, this takes the record: back in the 60's or so, it was estimated that replacing a 25 cent lightbulb in the dashboard of a high end Cadillac cost over $1200.

I do not believe it is a feature but a flaw that maybe could be corrected before selling. In my estimation I would try for either a friction nut on the choke or a better use of the spring holding the choke plate closed properly. My guess is some friction nut somewhere has come loose. The guy who is going to use this would have a real gas sucker and muffler system coking if he did not notice the choke moving inadvertently. One really wants the choke to stay where you set it especially in really cold weather where you might want partial choke settings if really cold say out hunting while cooking or sleeping for a few minutes while stabilizing then drifting off with a spring. You want it to drift off not on.

There are many variations of the XG8000E, I just repaired one that was brushless. They are frustrating to work on as you end up removing the gas tank to do just about anything, I got really proficient at doing so. Mine had a governor that was out of adjustment this low frequency and voltage.

Another educational video. Thanks When you have time:chance please capture and compare the raw output wave forms of a passive generator, compare to the input and output wave form of an inverter module of an inverter generator. We were told that passive output wave form are bad, how bad? and also told that inverter output are good, how good? Perfect if including THD comparison. Thanks in advance.

Love your videos James. I have a Generac XP8000E which I purchased at 13.3 hours in "No start" condition. After watching your videos I found the inlet valve stuck open with zero clearance. Pulled the pushrod. A gentle tap on the cam follower solved all. Never has acted up again. Under 6000w load it holds 60.9Hz but voltage does not increase above 110.5 Set the Hz per your tutorial and pulled the end cover to access the AVR as voltage was 107 (no load) To my surprise I found no AVR but a capacitor. Figured I have a brushless generator. Capacitor is listed as Generac OG5958. 47mf 440V. Discharged it and removed. Measured 47.6mf. Would really appreciate any suggestions from anyone.. Thanks Much

Glad I found this video. I'm looking for a video for removing and cleaning the carb on this unit. Have anything like that in your collection? I gotta get going at the moment but I plan to peruse your channel. The voltage and hertz info is great. Once I get my generator (exact same model) to stop "hunting" and running so variable I need to check the output. My UPS that has always handled the power from this generator wasn't liking the power the last time the power went out and kept shifting to battery. It was reading 119 volt coming in to the UPS but wouldn't hold and kept shifting off of input power to battery output. The weird thing is the generator smooths out under load, but the UPS still didn't like the power. I hope my generator has the pot to adjust the hertz if needed. This generator has performed flawlessly for several years, then all of the sudden it starts running weird. I always use Stabil but the fuel has been left in the tank for probably more than a season. Takes forever to run the fuel out of a full tank with no load but now I know how to easily drain it...and let my pickup use that old fuel! I also switched to ethanol free gas.
@jcondon12 жыл бұрын
I do not have a video removing and cleaning this carb. But it is more involved then most generators. You should remove the side panels and heat shield under the tank, then remove that choke lever connection. That should then give you access to remove the airbox and carburetor. This generator should have an adjustment for the voltage.

@@jcondon1 Thanks James! Really appreciate the reply. I DID get that far but was thwarted with no deep well socket (probably metric because none of my fractional would fit) to get those two nuts off the studs on either side of the choke opening. So now at least I know I can have the tank and heat shield off in just 5-10 minutes when I try again. I'd really like to learn how to clean carbs myself. These generators are not exactly easy to toss in a truck and get to a mechanic...takes two men with little to no back problems! I learned to take the engine side and leave the armature side to my stronger, younger buddy ;>)

⚠️Here are the generator safety tips: This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety. All generator safety rules need to be followed carefully 1) Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate the portable generator.

You do a superb job on these restorations but here are some suggestions which have worked for me. As a rule, I choose not to drain a tank through a fuel filter because any debris in the tank could shorten the life of the filter. In your case, the filter was going to be replaced anyway. A double male barbed connector might have also worked to splice the vent line. Two different friends were on the verge of replacing starters on riders when I discovered they had the battery cables reversed and the starter ran backwards. Where was the water hiding, in the frame?
@jcondon13 жыл бұрын
The water I think was pooled in the foot. The generator was stored outside. All drained out within a few hours of being inside. Agree on the filter comment.
@SimplyRedVirginia2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering that too. I just drained my tank (exact same model) and it made sense to me to just remove the line from the filter side of the shut off valve, that way you can decide when it starts draining! That valve is not mounted very well at all and comes out easily and can be pulled to a point of easier access. Another thing I discovered after incidents of slow fuel leak on to my garage floor, it that valve has a definitive 'click" when its closed and all the way open. When I popped it just outside of that closed click, it dribbles. Its hard to know you have clicked it because the way the thing is mounted is so loose and cheesy.

I don't know why, but it seems like used generators go for $300 no matter what. Could be newer or old, running or non-running, 3000W or 8000W, but still they ask $300 for it - $300 is the natural price of a used generator. Strange.

True that most people list them for around 300, but believe me they don’t all sell for that much. Probably at least 80% of the generators I see listed- the people are asking way too much, and they will never sell it at asking price.

@@mikea-strong5020 That's the irony - some of them (this one) are actually worth $300 but other sellers are delusional - they have some ancient rusty 3000W Coleman with a flat head engine and no voltage regulator and it doesn't run but they are STILL asking $300.

Hey James, I have a question for you. I have a 8k/10k Ridgid generator. I was noticing the Generac has an AVR that looks similar to the one I have on my Ridgid. My Question is will they interchange? The one I have had to put on is fit to the 6250 model Ridgid. When I run my generator, it sometimes runs for days at a time only being shut off for refueling. It runs my whole house which in the summer is a real test to it. I also wander if Generac bought Ridgid since they are using Ridgids colors. Anyway, it would be nice if the AVRs would fit since they are for the same size machine. Good job on your video. God bless you and the family and keep you all safe and healthy.

yes i would fit as long as the capacitor in the AVR are the same or higher number ,but typical none of this companies make they own heads (alternator) that is why they looks the same

Most of the moon shaped AVRs are compatible as long as the capacitor is the same rating. Have heard you can use one with a higher rated capacitor, but have not tried it yet. Most generators use a 470uf capacitor.

Not sure, have not taken an XP8000e apart before.
