Around 1980/81, I ordered a sci-fi trading card starter set from the JCPenny catalog. It came with a smattering of cards from various Topps sets, including BSG, STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, ALIEN and STAR TREK -- TMP, as well as protective pages for the cards. As I recall, JCP also offered a deluxe set which included a fancy binder, which I didn't get.

Thanks for showing the catalog, I keep meaning to look it up. There were toys that I remember either having or saw in a toy store. That were not mainstream, but were riding the sci-fi wave. I find those more interesting than the stuff people talk about today. About a decade ago I was at a vintage toy store, describing a toy I had. After about 20 minutes, the guy asked. "Was this it?". Showing me an image of the Coleco Space Blaster. Hopefully going down the catalog road, will shed some light on the fuzzy 40+ year old images floating around in my head.

As late as 1982 - some BG toys were kicking around ChildWorld, Play World and Toy's R Us . (However ChildWorld and Play World were KNOWN for doing some cleaning out of warehouses. Old stock from 1979 -- turned up in 1983 ! One day we found a STACK of Mattel Rodans (!!!!) for like $7.99 each !!!! Also Greg Gory the Bat and TONS of Suckermans !!!!!!

Very cool, we didn't have a JCPenny here in Canada so the closest wish book we had was from Sears, which was extremely cool in it's own right. I did have a few of both SW and BSG toys as a kid and still have a few BSG things now, over shadowed of course by my SW collection. I will say one of the harder items to get is the Colonial Landram as it was only released here in Canada and like the diecast Tie Bomber is a prize to collectors.

I was 14 in 1979 and every kid I knew saw these catalogs, especially around Christmas but the market was swamped with pure junk toys with Star Wars slapped on them and none of us wanted them. And back then I was very poor and whenever I got some cash for things like this it was a hard pass, they were a waste of money. We focused on the quality items we’re all well aware of so if we couldn’t afford that we’d buy other things but no crappy toys. Radio Shack had some interesting toys but they had knock offs that were kidding none of us. We’d usually buy a plastic model kit for Battlestar Gallactica and other space themed toys instead of wasting the cash. There was a lot of stuff back then to play with but rarely did my friends have tons of low quality toys, they would take good care of their Star Wars items and most still have them today.
