Another note: You can acces both WANs and LAN (alsomultiple if you want) using a single gigabit NIC (built-in) by connecting it to a switch and configuring the connection between the Pi and the switch as a trunk. You can then assign VLAN numbers to the different networks, and assign ports to the VLANs. It absolutely requires a managed switch though. This is a way more robust solution compared to USB network adapters for each additional network. The only reason you should have to use USB network adapters is when the combined bandwidth (structurally or transient) often exceeds the bandwidth of the built-in adapter and causes noticeable congestion. To demonstrate why: when you wiggle active network connectors, no problem. Sturdy design. Wiggle an active USB connector and chances are it disconnects.

I find it funny that people complain about 100/20 speeds. I am old (just so you have context). When I started my programming career we used a 300 baud phone coupler. It was so slow you could read the code. Eventually 4800, 9600, etc came along. Frame Relay, DSL and T1 were amazing. However, T1 cost was around $1,200/month for 1/1 speeds. Now, I have FIOS at my current home and I am at 300/300 with a business account giving me 5 static IPs. Our new home does not have anything typical for broadband. I have installed Starlink and the T-Mobile home Internet. Both are getting > 150 download speeds. Starlink averages 18 for upload and T-Mobile is about half of that. All of these speeds are greater than any modem I had, DSL, Frame Relay and T1. This video is great and thank you. I am a HAM operator so I have a few pis laying around. Keep up the great work.

I clicked on the title just to leave a message saying that the Pi5 is the best router on the market. Was pleasantly surprised that is exactly the suggestion of the video. If you want to go nuts, use the PCIe port for the second Ethernet port for better performance. Though if you don’t have 1GB internet there’s no reason to go that route, except for that tiny bit of CPU performance.

I use Ubiquity UDM Pro with the SL mini and standard as a distributed network and it is fail safe. Distributed is better cause both connections are actively been used like a load balancer so if one fails there is no switch over as it’s constant.

I'm definitely interested in learning more about this. I have a dual WAN setup with Starlink and a terrestrial wireless connection. The speed is great once it gets a connection, but it seems to have a large delay making a new connection. Not sure if it's a double NAT-ing problem or something else.

Before Starlink I had only 2 10M terrestrial wireless connections, and I ran OpenWRT and MWAN on a Linksys WRT router. I needed a different router to effectively use my new bandwidth but I couldn't put OpenWRT on it so I added an ER605 multi-WAN router ahead of my main router. That's when the trouble began. This is pretty cool. Currently I run a custom mini pc with pfSense installed at have both Cox Fiber and Starlink for a backup with automatic failover like your setup. I also have two Raspberrypi 5 8gb sitting around that I was thinking of what to do with. I'm going to use one to take over home assistant from the Pi3 that currently running it, but the other I wasn't sure of. I don't know why I never thought of using dongles to add additional nics to the pi! My fiber is a 2gb connection and the nics on the current pfSense mini pc are 2.5gb so it works well. I didn't consider a pi because I was only thinking of the single 1gb nic but now I think I can pull off adding two 2.5gb ethernet dongles....I just have to make sure that it can keep up with the switching at that speed but if so this is a cool project to try out!

Excellent video!👍 Is it possible to configure the router to failover to a secondary connection when speeds fall below a predefined threshold for a specified duration? Or is that what load balancing would do? I can only get my current dual-WAN TP-Link router to initiate failover upon complete service interruption. A solution that triggers failover once speeds degrade beyond need would be nice.

Good video, thanks for showing the technology behind your multi-wan router. That looks to be a good simple fail over solution. Obviously the fail over from one internet provider to another will cause secure websites problems since changing the IP address you are coming from would cause a failure in the security connection to say banks, or SSH and other similar applications… you would probably have to restart your session to the website or SSH session Anyway .. So when did you get a fiber provider internet connection? You have been talking about StarLink as your saving service as all you had was DSL you have said. I don’t recall you saying anything about your getting a fiber provider… Is the Fiber service for your business VS your StarLink for the home? Finding out more about you now 👍🙂

Also, since Starlink theoretically gives a public IPV6 address but their router doesn't handle the IPV6 could this RPi based system be the thing that lets us get around the CGNAT and back upstream to our LANs from the web? Thanks for your hard work

CGNAT is still an issue u less you go through another server that had a static IP. As for the Starlink. It does not need to be in bypass mode as the Raspberry Pi we changed its address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.2

UniFi is a great option too, but be warned...it's like a drug, you can't just use a router or an AP. Next thing you know you have cameras, a NAS...yea, I know. I use failover between two ISPs and it has been awesome, wife NEVER complains the internet is down. I never even notice that it goes down, it just fails over and restores to the primary when it comes back up.

I've been trying to figure which router would be best for starlink on wheater i should go for consumer grade or business. I wanted to try unifi dream machine but then I've been started researching that there has been problems with dream machine when using starlink. So I've been on fence about buying the setup. How I'd your experience been with unifi assuming you have a dream machine?

No usaría este dispositivo como un enrutador porque hay mejores opciones. Una de ellas es un mini PC con varios puertos Ethernet.

@jcristina you should definitely make a step by step how to video for us people who don’t understand all of it. Also it would be amazing if you could sell it already set up on your website. You could offer it where you could purchase the raspberry pi from you and it have options on the site to choose from 2 or 3 networks, Ethernet adapter etc. you could also offer it with the case. That would be amazing

So to sum this up, the US government spent $42 billion dollars to provide high-speed internet to rural areas of the country, and you are the only one who got it? 1 freaking gig? So jealous. Here is your freaking 💩 emoji.
These Pi's are mind blowing as to their capabilities. I'm also interested in a how to video. That way I can play it at half speed so I can keep up.🕑 Thanks again for all your guidance on these subjects. 👍You knew I had to put this in somewhere. 💩🤣
