So after importing images and choosing the destination as my external SSD, I will only see the image files themselves inside the SSD but no XMP file correct? Only time I will see a XMP file next to the original image file is after I do an edit?

It depends. If you import and add something like metadata the .xmp will be there. If you are shooting .jpg files you will never get the .xmp.

@@Jcwphoto So I did my first import and it was from an SD card about 2 weeks ago and the second file down in the list of 19 images was a XMP. Had some weird issue with the next 3 imports even though they were done the same exact way as the first and so I had to synchronize and then the three imports finally ended up showing under folders in LRC and under the first import, don’t know why it happened. Only the second and third import of those next 3 has a XMP and not the fourth and they also were there second file down in the list of images. I just did 17 more imports 2 days ago and of course the same way and not one of them shows a XMP. I have not edited any images yet either. I shoot raw only and before the first import I set up the info in metadata to be added to each set of imports.

Thanks for the video and pending series. I am just starting my LrC journey, or should I say sentence. When you say “add” does that mean it is deleted from your internal hard drive? I gather “copy” means copy so would leave the images on the internal hard drive. Otherwise why the different terminology?

Copy means it will move your files from your sd card to another hard drive, and put them in the Lightroom catalog. Add mean it will keep the images in the same location, but add them to the catalog. It will also add a .xmp file in both cases if you are shooting raw. It will never delete your original files.

@@Jcwphoto Thanks John. It is strange that by definition “copy” is to make a replica. Usually “cut” is used to delete and then paste. “ Add” is a bit of a nothing really. So if you are moving your images are you regaining the space on the sd card and therefore no real need to reformat the card if going back into the same camera?

@@tonyblake8841 no the images will remain on the card, you should reformat it.
