Welcome to the club my friend. Glad you found the vid useful, the secondary Air system is something that all 4th gen owners will deal with at one point or another, lol. Kinda like bad cats, loose steering wheels and hydraulic clutch system failure

I just made this video today and haven't tried to pass smog yet so I'm still crossing my fingers. Remember that you may have issues with the diverter valve or solenoid on top of a bad pump, check valves, etc. Good luck and I'll let you know how mine turns out.

Vibration and penetrating oil is the key to loosening fittings. I use a Ryobi 12v Auto hammer at 3,600 beats per minute on difficult problems

I have a 2001 Corvette LS1. My problem was the AIR control solenoid and it is almost impossible to find. It worked fine for 500 miles... then my AIR fuse blew, replaced it and was fine for 100 miles. Now my CEL came on w/ P0410 and everything is working!?? I am an ASE CMAT and this system is a real pain in the A**! Nice Video!

Have you checked the pump for operation recently? It is possible it recently died. Bad luck, but it happens. Congrats on ASE cert, I just certified on A4 and A5.

@@jcx2bby The problem was the hard plastic vacuum hose from the solenoid to the valve on the pump. I had 10 ft. of 5/32 hose... Problem is fixed in that area for good! Thanks again!

@@CaptEricS Going through this now. Replaced the pump, check valves, repaired an open vacuum line under the battery. Still got a pending p0410!! Next step is this hose you are referring to. I'm bitter about this system to say the least.

@@superdave4543 The final fix... I removed the the fender skirt cover behind the RF wheel and followed the vacuum lines to the AIR solenoid. Using a 10mm wrench, remove the sol. and reposition it to the batt. area. (Note; you cannot see the sol. See my post on "Corvette Forums" for that code.) Next; The vacuum hose is hard plastic and a joke. I used 10 ft. of 5/32nd rubber hose and bypassed the POS plastic line from the AIR pump to the Sol.= problem fixed! It is easier to remove the L/H headlight bucket than working from underneath. If you think the AIR system is a joke wait until the headlight motors go bad. I've had the L/H bucket out 8 times and the R/H out 4 times, trying to fix the headlight motors and AIR system. Don't try to fix the motors because you can buy new motors on EBAY for $85.00 for the pair. To remove the buckets, remove the top cover and the black bezel. Look carefully and you will see 3 studs w/ 10mm nuts holding the unit to the fender skirt. Remove them and look for 3 bolts w/ 13mm heads holding the bucket to the frame. Pull forward and the whole bucket comes out. I bought the brass gears for the motors ($50.00) Now, I'm selling them on EBAY after I found the new complete motors. I hope this helps!

@@CaptEricS Update. Replaced the solenoid and relocated it to the battery area like you did. Also replaced the line from the solenoid to the check valve like you. 10 ft of 5/32 vacuum line. Still getting p0410. I stopped by the dealer today and the shop foreman said it could be the computer itself or possibly needs a firmware/software update. I'm at a loss. The pump turns on every time the car starts. Check valves replaced. Don't know what to do next.

I got a 02 wls trans am with 33k on it and my check engine light was coming on. So my mechanic told me it was this so I was just curious what it did. Great video! It's going to cost my about $500. I'm sure I could do it cheaper myself but you know who's got time for that!

I got long tube headers that dont need that pump so i just deleted the whole pump out, now got codes but ill be tuning them out

What actually controls the air pump. My pump works when I hook it up to a battery, but not on the car. Also checked fuse and relays. Everything is good.

I assume it's the ECU, not entirely sure though. Do you have power to the pump's plug upon a cold startup?

Well I think it's safe to say that your control solenoid and check valves are ok. Still need to check your air pump operation.

Appreciate the video, just found out there has been some ghetto rigging in my ole '98 z28 emissions system. She's been mothballed for a few years and never had smog issues before but with the shops getting nailed so bad they are being strick as hell now. The air box doesn't even have the secondary air hose port but does have a pump at least still mounted in the car so that's no biggie but they also have some aftermarket valve covers which required up to chop and add hose length to the pcv hose to reach that driver side valve. Without any check engine or codes ever happening I gotta assume they deleted that error code with a tuner (which is fine by me lol) but I am curious if you've had any issues passing smog with tht SLP lid considering they weren't a factory option for z28's only SS trims? Have half a mind just yo get the lid and stick a dummy hose there to pass that visual since she passes on the sniffers just failed the visual for the 1st time and I've had this car since 2011 surprised no-one noticed this before now.

Nope, passes just fine with the SLP lid. If you're tuned out, that's the way to go!

Think I will, I noticed the 98 slp's don't have the secondary air hose cut out pinched out which seems odd 99-02 do, I'll just punch it out and put the dummy hose on to look the part lol. Is your states smog test as thoroughly bs as our CaliKremlin's is lol? Shit my '11 STI daily driver has an aem carb legal cai and last year was the 1st year a smog tech even let me pass WITH the carb # and didn't make me go home swap out the pos stock box go drive 60 miles n come back to retest.. Ridiculous as hell to pay for the proper legal carb intake just to still be asked to bust out the stock box. Makes me wish I'd just bought the grimmspeed hybrid ram air set up since I've been swapping put for years until now.. Better system by far and cheaper without that shake em down tax on the manufacturer just for that damn carb stamp 🤦. Lol I'm just bitchin now either way appreciate the response and the video's I'll be ordering the check valves as well just to be through I'll be sellokg the car in a couple years and don't wanna sell a future headache to another car nut I can't do that to our people 😂

@@Jordan-ql6tm oh I completely understand how maddening this emissions garbage is. I don't think Nevada is as tight on emissions tests as CA though. They do a quick visual, I mean like 5 seconds, and then hook up to the OBD2 port. If the tests are complete and no ses light, you're done. Thankfully I do not live in Vegas anymore, moved to IL where emissions isn't required in most places. Good on you for fixing as many issues as you can for the next guy. Good karma can not be underestimated!

Ironically I know the guy who sold me the car a small private mechanic shop who obviously pulled one over on me lol, got so much heat from returning customer's who he didn't keep his promises with he committed fraud and pretended to sell his business to an old coworker on paper so they could say new management isn't liable for prior warranty work etc for returning customers and eventually lost his whole business as a result, but he did get away with that bs for a good 15 yr's. Surprised he didn't lose his teeth after all that.

They screw onto the metal tubing and the rubber tubing slides over the other end of the valve.

You don't have to at that point, no. As far as I know, the AIR system has zero affect on performance, only emissions.

Someone has probably removed the system and removed the coding from the ECU which is why you passed. It might also be that your car came from the factory without it, I'm not sure. But its a pretty common mod for guys to get rid of the system completely.

Can't do that in a state that requires smog inspections. Even if you reflash the ecm to get rid of the codes, they physically examine your car (in NV) for the equipment.
