This video was extremely valuable to me (and I’m sure others), please continue to post more like these! I really enjoyed how you took the time to show and explain the wiring schematics and how certain things could be tested with or without a bidirectional scan tool. I very much appreciate how you took the time to show the live data and explain what we should be looking at, I just bought myself my first bidirectional scanner and as a novice DIY’er I have a hard time understanding all the live data that it gives me… Also, where can a DIY’er get the explanation that you showed us on your screen of how the secondary air system operates, that too was extremely helpful. Thanks again

I chased the same intermittent code on my '05 Chevy Trailblazer. About twice a year this code would set. All the fuses, relays, air pump and wiring checked out ok. I couldn't reproduce the problem. After two years of chasing this code, I discovered the solenoid was sticking. It would work 97% of the time. I replaced it with an AC/Delco part and haven't had any more problems.

I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I just wish I had a professional scan tool like that. Thank you for the video.

great diagnostic routine if you have time. in a busy shop, when you see a new computer, new air control valve and new pump, you should go straight for the relay, disconnect it and check the terminals if you don't see any corrosion. spending 30 minutes on-camera alone makes me think that those new parts were most likely replaced by the same person here.

Is there any other use for it? & Yes your video was very informative and helpful. I like the way you explain things and give other useful information...I see you’ve learned well from the other masters! great job. Thanks, Doug.
@billyyoder81715 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug. The purpose of the secondary air injection system is to help reduce hydrocarbon emissions during cold start. During cold start, the fuel system control is in open loop for a few seconds. The fuel air mixture will be rich because the ECM will not be fine tuning the fuel control (trims). The secondary air injection will allow added air (oxygen) into the exhaust stream to mix with the extra fuel in the exhaust (that did not burn in the cylinders). This will give the catalytic converter(s) enough air to allow the extra fuel to create the catalytic effect which will allow the catalytic converter(s) to heat up quicker. This will help lower the emissions quicker/sooner. The testing procedure he is describing in the video is how the ECM/PCM does a self test of the secondary air injection system. During closed loop, the oxygen sensors are signalling normally and the fuel system is controlled by the ECM/PCM (trims). If the secondary air injection system is working properly, the ECM/PCM expects to see the oxygen sensors voltage drop (go lean) when extra air is pumped straight into the exhaust stream. Note, if the vehicle is equipped with AFR sensors instead of oxygen sensors, the AFR sensors voltage will go up when the extra oxygen leans the exhaust stream. Hope this helps.

@billyyoder81715 жыл бұрын
@@bigfootemobileauto9734 hi Doug. You are correct. Regular narrow band oxygen sensors voltage goes down when lean, up when rich. Wide band (A/F ratio) sensor data will show voltage or amperage (or display both) doing the opposite.
