JD 4650 Monitor and Auto Steer Installation

Over the past weekend I installed the auto steer and the monitors for the planting season in the John Deere 1983 4650! Almost a good to go on planting!
Werner Farms, established in 1960, is a family farm operation based in rural Hanna, IN. The KZbin channel and social media pages are run by Keith Werner, the third generation of Werner Farms.
Werner Farms currently operates on 1,700 acres of corn, soybeans, wheat and rye along with 1,000 acres of custom harvest work. The farm has no-tilled since the early 1980s and continues to increase acres of cover crops year to year. Besides the farm operation, Werner Farms has sold Pioneer Seed since the 1980s. Numerous John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm ranging from a 730 to an 8530.

How do you find the ATU behaves vs a tractor with proper steering valve in it? Same level or response / accuracy? or a bit slower etc given its got less direct control of the steering?

Bit slower since it has less direct control and there is less of a communication issue with the integrated valve.

Why don’t you just buy another ATU, the new atu 300 is smaller and is only about 1600 dollars then you don’t have to mess around swapping it every year.

With us updating combines we no longer need to swap the ATU so the ATU will permanently stay in the 4650.

Hey quick question 🙋‍♂️? I have a 4640 jd I’m trying to run mapping on the 2630 jd monitor An the green star itc . But I’m not having any luck on the wiring harness to power it an the itc . Do you by change know a part number or what is it I need to have ?

How come y’all don’t put the planter on the tractor with tracks it has a bigger cab

Overkill on hp and plus it would turn up big ruts on the end rows.

Hey, thanks for posting. I have a 4255 that was running a brown box and the first gen dome. I took off the dome and removed the brown box last year after our field station was struck by lightening. My cousin/neighbor put up a new station but it vaulted past our capability to use it with our first gent stuff. I still have the ACU installed. Do you think the system could work if I bought a Greenstar 3000/6000 and a 2630 controller?

I think it should. I would double check with your local Deere AMS guy just to be sure.

Have you guys thought about putting the planter on the 8530, that would give you more space. The 4650 can pull that vertical tillage tool also.

We considered and the 4650 is still going to stay on the planter. And no the 4650 can't handle the 30ft vertical if anything but barely.
