i dont think it's toxic to have emotions. i think jealousy betrays a lack of confidence - we aren't confident enough in ourselves, and therefore we rely on outside factors in order to maintain a sense of self-worth, and outside factors are ultimately unreliable.

Maybe it helps to see it that way: you can’t only swap one thing you want to have. If you could live another persons life, you’d have to take all of what comes with it- the Environment, people, places, school, parents, looks, culture, abilities etc etc. And i guarantee you, those people have their own problems and probably wish to swap with someone else also.

You can believe you deserve things without being mad that others get it instead of you, it’s something I’ve been working on for a while and I’ve made lots of progress. For example, if me and my friend both have art commissions open and they get lots of commissions while I get none for months, I can be proud of them and not get too jealous, even if I know we’re at the same skill levels. You deserve attention, and for your work to be acknowledged, the thing you need to realize is that the world isn’t fair and success is never guaranteed despite skill or effort.

The idea that we don't "deserve" anything sounds bad, to say the least. Maybe it's part of a larger branch of thought that couldn't be summarized in a short reel but we do deserve good things. We deserve to be treated with love and kindness and respect by fact of shared humanity. Not because we are better than anyone, but we all deserve these things.
@thekingsdaughter4233
@thekingsdaughter4233 Жыл бұрын
That _would_ be the stuff for a long episode. Philosophical stuff. I agree with the "treated with kindness and respect". Not sure what else we "deserve" _just because._ But that is such a tangled subject. And these days, the entitlement culture is so strong. 😒 It would be interesting to sit down over tea and discuss it, for sure. 😊

It's one thing to think you deserve good things and good vibes (which is healthy and is a positive thing), but it's an entirely different thing when you feel "entitled" to things, people and experience... Jealousy happens when you're feeling entitled!

I was one of those kids that could get high scores without having to study. I actually struggled with mugging stuff up and used to get mediocre grades. But then I changed my study style and what I did was to actively listen in class, do my homework (without copying), befriend the high scoring classmates and help tutor or revise with my friends. So while I didn't really make notes and study the traditional way, it was easier for me to recall information through more practical use. Just because you don't see the person put in the work doesn't mean they get things easily, there is always a method, a trick and there will always be a lesson to learn from everyone or everything, you just need to be open to the idea to learn and grow. Jealousy is healthy when you want to improve yourself rather than bring down a seemingly successful person. I would say that I've definitely been jealous, but most of the time I've used it to better myself as well as helped me shape the person I'm today.

I used to believe that I could get everything I wanted by working hard and “doing the right things”. Unfortunately, that’s not how the world works and some ppl are just lucky to have the upper hand. That’s why we all have to work our way around problems and accept what can’t be changed. Honestly, this is the most inspiring short I’ve watched.

Yes!! This sentiment is hard to come across on the internet. Meritocracy is pushed so much online that I swear people sometimes forget that there’s people out there who work way harder than us and will always have less. Life isn’t fair and there’s a lot we can’t control. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth working hard and trying-it does have an effect. But luck exists too.

First step is to admit it. Second step is to realize it is harmful for you and/or the person you are jealous of without giving you any benefits. Third step is to embrace that you and others are different so there is no use to compare yourself with others. Instead, start comparing yourself with who you were yesterday. Fourth step is to be happy about your own progress and for the progress of others. Fifth step: you will never really feel jealousy again since it won't make sense anymore :)

I'm not really jealous about anything, but health :c I'm noticing that I'm becoming more jealous with my health deteriorating... I'm jealous of the time when I could walk and go to school, but now also of the people who still can. I'm jealous of the things I could do and can't now, people who can eat what I can't, people who had a proper childhood outside of the hospital, people with healthy parents who went on trips or even on holidays.. and it feels horrible to admit, but I can't help it :// I even cried watching people being happy and running, when I was looking on the telly or outside of my window.. :c I was always grateful for what I had and that was kinda enough, but I'm so sick of being sick now.. :c

I think we mix up the idea of deserving something with no one has the right to keep you from getting something. I believe in the second one, but not the first. Because if I deserve to feel good bout myself that means someone owes it to me. But if I’m allowed to feel good about myself then it’s nobody’s responsibility but rather a privilege I can give myself.

I think her point is that "deserving" is a made up concept. It's not about "deserving it," because we're all shaped by forces outside our control. Sometimes we get lucky, sometimes we work, but a lot less of it is in our control than we think. It's much healthier to just do the best you can, and know most other people are doing the same, and not burden yourself with pride and jealousy.

I don't deserve a certain outcome. Life is not a pure meritocracy so regardless of how you believe the world should be, believing you deserved or earned a certain reward for your efforts is just not reality. Whether things work out in your favor is not in your control and believing that certain actions or abilities should result in certain rewards will only lead to disappointment that can be entirely avoided if you accept how much is outside of your control. A similar strand of thought is present in many religions and philosophies, and I believe for good reason.

Tbh I have always struggled with jealousy and comparisons myself. My family is extremely narcissistic and toxic. I constantly compare myself to my sister or my cousins/aunts/uncles, etc. i didn’t do well in school, I went to college without any financial support, I had minimal debt because I spent 2 years at community college before transferring & paid everything off each semester. Meanwhile my grandmother financed my cousins ( I did better than they did), and my grandmother laughed at me saying you’ll never get into your ( insert dream school). I actually got in twice but couldn’t qualify for the loans to go there (have a single mom with bad credit). I’m at a point where I have no debt at all but I need a new car, new job, and to move out to get away from my toxic family. Idk, I know it’s not worth it or helpful to be jealous/ compare but it’s harder than people think.

I always respected stay at home moms as I was raised by one (along with a working dad) and I usually describe my childhood as "idyllic." However, when I found myself having a really hard time on the job market, it took me a couple years to accept that maybe I just needed to be at home supporting my husband and our church. Now that I've accepted it, life is just so much less stressful and relaxed both for myself and my husband. I get to visit the disabled, serve my husband delicious and nutritious food, and pursue informal spiritual studies. Soon I'll get to apply that development to parenting our children and there is no greater impact one can make on the world than raising children well.

I am jealous of a girl in my biology class, because, even tho she never raises her hand and stuff she gets a better oral mark than me. I'm raising my hand nearly every time and my teacher told me, I should work on my oral mark harder. I hate the hatred teachers fuel between students. I try and try and try. I hold presentation, which he told me were great, I work focused, I raise my hand as often as possible, my written mark gets better and better with every exam and he told me that I still am just as good as I had been half a year ago. I feel mistreated. In class I'm often bored because of how he teaches. Tlwe are the advanced biology class and not just starting to get to know biology and when I addressed it, that I felt underchallenged, he told me it's OK and gave me more presentations to do. And he always says that she is a model student and does soooo well. I don't want to hate her.

Pride + jealousy = entitlement. I always thought that only spoiled rich kids had that until I became an adult, and realized that despite not being spoiled or rich, I was capable of feeling entitled because I was raised to care about making my family look good, so when I had a family of my own, that translated to high expectations of obedience from my kids as well. They shouldn’t care about making me look good tho, kids will be kids and say blunt embarrassing things every now and then. If they’re aren’t given the opportunity to make mistakes without scolding, and given encouragement to keep trying, they won’t have a positive relationship with chores and responsibilities, and will rebel as I did, not having that support. It’s true that you’ll understand your parents better when you become one, and that if you see the problems for what they are rather than sweeping them under the rug and being superficial, then you can help make the next generation better by being more approachable and present, and giving your kids the care you wished you’d had. It’s easier to love my parents despite the toxicity now that I’m a parent myself. I just have to learn to stop being a perfectionist, and expecting perfection either. We aren’t robots. There can be great satisfaction in succeeding in something regardless of the amount of failed or flawed attempts. I mustn’t stunt anyone’s growth with my own mental baggage.

You just need to find your strengths, your talents and your own confidence in order to stop feeling envious. The envy is pointing to ways you aren't treating yourself well and aren't appreciating yourself. It's a terrible idea to just stuff your envy down and judge it as a disease. Everyone has their unique worth and you aren't an exception.
