I’m kinda going through that now. My mother was just reminding me that mourning is not just for death, it’s for Endings. Ends of life, but also of relationships, and of courses, and of eras. Because even though change can be good, it means giving up what you already have and jumping into something that promises nothing. And for many of us, it is easier to stay in a situation where we know what we are than to try to become something different, even when different means better. We cling to the identity we have. It is hard to be single because I was in a relationship for so long I forgot who I was on my own. It is hard to heal because we spend so much time being sick that we forget how to be healthy. To be human is to be mourning every moment of the past, and trying to forget them just enough to figure out who we are right now.

This was my experience, too, but the relief only came once I actually left him.
