Breval is really an underrated composer. He might not have been such a great master like Haydn and Boccherini but what he wrote sounds beautiful. Virtuosity is there, yes, but still there is a balance between virtuosity and musicality of the piece. Not just for showing off like so many 19 th century compositions which are just there to show the players technical abilites at fast speed.

Agreed, i think its do to many of his pieces occurring thru didactic methods, like cello books,,but breval is amazing, he really gives equal love to melody and harmony

I agree with you. It’s a shame that most cellists only know him as the composer of that trite, boring and over played Sonata in C. When I go and judge cellists at string festivals, solo and ensemble festivals and competitions invariably there are several performances of that one piece and I have to restrain myself from screaming when it’s performed. Breval’s other sonatas, especially the G Major Sonata, and his concertos are such fun to play. I recently discovered his duets for violin and cello that my friend and I just began to work. This is the duet we’re working on. We’re having such a good time learning it, and my friend has become a big fan of Breval’s music.
