What a fun and rewarding project to restore your table cloth. Thanks for sharing your process. I have some fine crocheted pieces that I am looking at finishing so that I can display and preserve them, and seeing what you do and hearing about your original framing of this piece is giving me lots of ideas! Hope that your doctor can give you some good news on your hand and dexterity journey.

What a gorgeous piece of needlework you have. I think probably most of us gasped when you shared your story about what happened to it. I look forward to the updates on your restoration of it.

Thank you for another wonderful floss tube episode. I prefer to stitch using a lap stand with a scroll frame but I have used hoops and Q`-naps and stitch in hand on small projects. (especially with your encouragement). I have found that my thread twists no matter what method I use! Maybe it is my technique? How I hold my needle? I do use the sewing method as well as stab-stick and the thread still twists. I will pay more attention to see if using any of the hoops/frames/Q-snaps have more incidents of twisted thread than the others. I love the antique piece! I use "Orvus" but have used "Restoration fabric cleaner" (available from quilt shops) to clean some yellowed items wit a good result. I can't wait to see your results!

This sounds fascinating, Jean! I'm looking forward to seeing the stages of restoration. And I do hope you get some encouragement and positive results regarding your recovery of dexterity. I have been stitching almost exclusively in hand lately, sewing rather than poking, and even though my experience level doesn't begin to approach yours, I believe my stitches are neater using this method as well. I will definitely be checking out your linen fabrics. I think the 10" squares will be perfect for my first pieces on linen.

Love your videos/wealth of knowledge! Thank you and i pray your hand is restored. Colors running would be a fear. And how to dry it fairly quickly too.

Wishing you all the best results with the restoration process!! It's a lovely piece of needlework. Maybe the stitcher just missed seeing those extra linen pieces she didn't clip off the back😊.

Just this week I was listening to Vonna Pfiffer on Fiber Talk and have adopted her method of stitching (she uses a frame, I stitch in hand). The method is point of needle down and eye of needle up - makes your stitches look great and far fewer knots.

I am never afraid to wash a piece I have stitched. I think it needs it to properly finish it. I use the same soap I use for my hand knit sweaters. I love my 6” hoop. I never could do it in hand.

Gorgeous restoration project, Jean! Good luck with it. You have owned your wall hanging for close to 30 years. So, I recommend you remove the small triangles that bother you. Betting the creator with be smiling in heaven when she sees you do so. You are already turning her creation into a collaboration - especially because your are plan to remove the second fabric on the edges. :-D

I just watched this video and I would like to share my experience with a textile cleaning product called Retro Clean. I stitched "And A Forest Grew" by Rosewood Manor for my sister. It's a large piece. On it, I replaced one of the trees with a little stitch of her dog, Ziggy. This piece of needelwork is special to her. Well, last year her house burned down along with a lot of my needlework. This piece was sitting on her mantel, and it fell to the ground, breaking the glass. There is one hardly noticeable little hole where the glass cut it. But the whole sampler was brown with smoke and heat damage. I thought it was a goner. I thoiught i would see what cleaning it would do, but I didn't have much hope. I put it in a big tub filled with warm water and a whole bag of Retro Clean, and put it outside in the sun all day, adding warm water as needed. Imagine my surprise when I took the piece out and rinsed it. It was almost as new! It took all the staining out! I was amazed and impressed with Retro Clean. If the Orvis doesn't get all the staining out, you could try this.

Retro Wash and Retro Clean are the products I planned to use if the Orvus didn't work! And let me say that I am sorry to hear of your sister's house fire. It's good that you were able to salvage that special project for her.

I love your journey. I have done bobbin lace and taught it 35 or so years. My finished table cloth took 3 years to lace. There are 8 repeats that measure about 28 x 36 inches, and then it is stitched to linen. It is a course lace because it is a russian pattern. What do you do with it. I can't decide if any of my children would want it. I did a Hardanger table cloth for my friend, and she i hope sold it because she was offered $5,000.00 for it. I did my husband one, and it resides in a blanket chest and is not used. That is sad to me. The owner of the needle point joint in Ogden Utah says to use blue dawn dish soap, and it works well. She has money and a very large lace collection. I was allowed to see some of it once it was wonderful. I await your next video to learn more. I had tumors in the left side of my neck and so my left side arm and hand are weaker and it has been 30 years since the surgeries, so sometimes you just adjust to what you have left. Good luck on your recovery i sure hope it works for you. They have exercise balls that help with strength, so you might try that.

How interesting, can’t wait for more progress on your restoration project, Haven’t as yet washed any of my projects, might be a bit braver if I could find the cleaning product that you use ( orbis paste) ....if Jean uses it ,it’s ok with me! Someone might know if you can get it in the uk.

Good Luck with cleaning this piece. I iron my pieces, but I don't wash them, afraid of my overdyed floss bleeding or my linen shrinking. I know there are oils in my skin, but I do wash my hands constantly & my skin (head to toe) is super dry, so I don't worry about it. I only have a few pieces to me that are True Treasures.

Most people use over dyed floss. I washed a piece that I worked on along time. The floss used on the edge ran .

I primarily use hand dyed linen. I don't think its colorfast. I do not want to take a chance washing it.

I only use DMC threads which are colorfast, kind of why I stick with them, they seem tried and true to me where I fear other non-colorfast threads would run. No matter what, I believe since we do handle our pieces for a length of time, even with clean hands we can still get skin oils on our work. I have no issues about washing my works, and I do wash them. You can't always tell, but more often than not there may be a spot or the entire piece may look better. I will never again wash perforated paper! I had no choice. It's a Mill Hill Santa face with beads all over and in his white beard along with french knots. Over more than a decade later, NO glass covering his face, he YELLOWED! Argh!!!! I tried and tried hard to wash the white flosses, FAIL!!! I WILL restitch him! I LOVE that piece! I'd choose perforated plastic over paper ANY day for anything where paper is called for! If it had been plastic, I'd still have the piece, even though yellowed. It was worth the try! I will cut the beads off and reuse the beads 'if' they wash well and don't look yellowed to me. Your piece is gorgeous! Best of luck cleaning it and I can't wait to see updates! Thanks for sharing all this with us!

Good luck! I also worry about floss bleeding. I always wash my hands before I stitch! I tried to go to your Etsy shop from this video and it wouldn’t work! Is that because you are working on it?

IDK what happened but I re-typed it the same way, saved it, and tested it and it now works. Who knows what goes on?!
