JFL touches on something very important here that many sovereigntists miss. To have any hope of winning more than 50% in a future referendum, you need to convince people that they and their families will actually benefit from an independent Québec.

Pretty good discussion. I really enjoy you interviews. And i think that quebec anglos should take a more positive and engage more in the PQ. Lerning french is an asset just as much is learning english. i can switch between both languages any time and I feel much better because I can . I came speaking mainly french and Kabyle, but i leaned english in here. I know how much french is important for the quebecois and I understand it very well. I don't think Quebec would be the same without any of these languages. On peut avoir un pays et faie de ce pays l'un des meilleurs au monde :)

My two sons, trilingual (Born in Quebec, Fluent in French, English speaking), with a third language due to marriage( Filipino, or Korean), are not ever going to vote for independence. My grandson (age 6, in English school) is immersed in French as a strong second language. Grandkids friends are also trilingual (English,French,Spanish) Some families have relocated to Ontario for job opportunities. A referendum will lose, because of the higher unemployment here, and much lower level elsewhere.

There was a comment about immigrants and French. I came from Toronto, and when I arrived, I made a deal at home (wife, kids), for French newspapers, French TV, French Radio, and courses in French for English speakers. After 2 years of partial immersion (using French in shopping, etc), I was listening to a French radio station in the car, when the individual cracked a joke. When I completed laughing, I realized that I had "arrived". We could return to mother tongue at home, and French for French partners. My own experience today, is that most, if not all young people are fluent in both languages. If they approach me in French, I continue in French. Here is an aside information. In the USA, 1 in 5 marriages are mixed race marriages. If I look at Montreal, I believe it is 1 in 20 and within 10 years, may be closer to 1 in 10. Bilingualism/multilingualism will be relevant.

Arron you are awesome. I find it absurd that we are still talking separation. I spen 6 months of the year in Florida, where multi languages are a common thing. No laws to protect their language. Our language laws are so outrageous. There’s no future here for our young English Jewish minorities. It’s not the Canadian dream in Quebec. Look who they have attracted moving forward. Here is the other problem. We need one coalition party to have a common sense government. Look at the last election. Not one have a majority vote. They are all weak in numbers.

I respect many of the former and current PQ members. But any referendum that results in a marginal win hovering around 50% is a recipe for disaster and civil unrest. If 80% of Quebecers out of a solid vote count said yes to a clear mandate I would be happy to accept that result. If a government cannot maintain basic infrastructure (roads) then don’t expect paradise on earth post-yes referendum. Another consideration is that acceptance of independence doesn’t occur in a vacuum. If the federal government does a great job Quebecers notice.
@fs400ion9 ай бұрын
80% is delusional. 60% would be ideal. But considering propaganda and fear anglos and allos will remain quite against, which will bring the overall YES results down. To win the francophones will have to be around 65% for the Yes. (as opposed to 60% in 1995) However I do hope we could reach 30-40% allos for the Yes and maybe 20% Anglos for the Yes. That's PSPP's challenge. If this happens then the Yes could win with ``only`` 60% from francophones

Ultimately Quebec sovereignty is a ethnic movement. Way back when, when I was young and a sovereignist myself, we believed in a still better Canada which was fully bilingual and multilingual in fact. Over the years I learned this was not the case for the vast majority. We fundamentally see things differently. The “too much English spoken in Montreal “ argument is a better example. It is never due to anything pure laine people do but always due to others . French Canadian quebecers are not having kids ergo their percentage is dropping…. So it’s the fault of a flow and allos! French Canadians left Montreal for the boonies during Covid 19, I know many, thus the percentage of Francophones has dropped… because they left? nope… because the anglos and allos. The only true solution for Quebec AND Canada is Quebec Sovereignty AND a new 10th province. This allows a French nation to remain on this continent while respecting the history of the many Anglos and Allos, which is nearly as long as that of the French. What JF does not appreciate is that the value of English and French is not the same to a foreigner or even someone in Canada. A Francophone learning English brings immense value to his/her life. Access to many more voices in science, arts, politics and general culture. The same is simply not true for a non Francophone. Those coming here are not coming to Quebec but rather Canada. The only true measure of attractiveness is a sovereign nation. We have been two nations from the start and should simply make it real.

There is a huge influx of immigrants to Canada and to Quebec. These immigrants are for Canada, because they are also families with children, and they have left countries where they want a Canadian future for their children and themselves. They are also not members of the PQ or CAQ or the Liberals.
