Totally. The fact that he has accomplished all of this with his incomplete hand isn't highlighted enough. Just think about how important your grip is in gi jujitsu. Machado has had to do everything a little bit different and still made it to the top. He is amazing. Sure, you can say, 'having that hand is all he knows'. But even as a kid, he would have had to take what was taught to him and all of the other kids and then manipulated the techniques to make them work for him. It is quite amazing.

I’m 48 years old and started my journey in Jiu Jitsu four years ago. At the time I was in a deep depression and after three months of doing Jiu Jitsu, depression got the best of me and I ended up quitting. After four years I decided to comeback and after two months I earned my first stripe! It was a moment of joy because of everything I went through. I am more motivated than ever and most importantly I finally beat depression! Things happen in life and we have to fight and move on! This video just brought tears into my eyes and to see two legends show so much respect to each other it’s just amazing! Much respect!

(I still have that magazine when JJM competed at the Abu Dhabi matches in the 2000s, JJM never let his one hand stopping him to achieve what he wanted, he won all five matches by either choking or submitting his opponents in under five minutes and won his division!!!

@L3g3ndkill4 It's a combination of both. Generally it takes 8-10 years to get a black belt and you get tested based on knowledge of sweeps, submissions, etc and how to use them in a roll. Black and red belts and above take into account the time actively participating in BJJ and contributions to the sport.

I kinda know how rankings work, but Is the red belt ceremony only within family's or ppl who achieve fame in some kind ? Lately I've only been seeing the Gracies brothers handing out red belts to each others, I know KZbin algorith and so on and I know that it's a way of life and spirit and traditions within the art, it's a way of living and you have to earn it, but still... I've searched for red belt ceremony myself on youtube but can't find others outside the Gracies recieving the red belt.
