When Mr Holland looked at the pictures of his family he realized what he had was precious. He stayed with what was real and let the fantasy go.

@@josephinakeam6197Amen.i hate it when ppl say that if a man follows a younger woman to pursue his lifelong dream and he leaves his family means he's being childish or irresponsible.if he neglect his fatherly duties than yes but a man or woman have the right to pursue their dreams with or without a new person.I know it's a marriage but if someone isn't happy they shouldn't be forced to stay..then it just becomes staying married and they become resentful.not fair for anyone.I believe if you truly love someone you set them free.i know easier said than done but I have done that

This is one of my favourite movie scenes; it has stuck with me for many years. The subtle expressions from Glenn, Iris, and Rowena hint at unrequited love, future possibilities, and heartbreak. It is exquisitely filmed and sung, with Rowena's closing lighting and facial expression leaving me with a knot in my chest. Beautiful.

Probably my favorite scene in a movie. Jean does this song better than the original. Hers has all the tenderness of young, innocent love.

Better than the original? What does that even mean? This timeless piece has been done by a lot of great singers, a testament to its depth. Like, just f'rinstance, Linda Ronstadt. Not hard on the ears exactly... this is lovely but it does it no harm to put it in a forest of spectacular recordings.

This movie made me listen to every vocal song differently. Now when I hear a cover of an original song I listen to it thinking “is this person conveying the meaning of the song or simply putting their vocal flair on someone else’s popular song?“ Many covers cannot accomplish this but it is a gem when one is found.
@Thankful_n_Grateful2 жыл бұрын
@@brucehilton1662 I wasn't aware of the other's version of this song nor who was the original singer / artist at time I heard this song in Mr Holand's Opus... What made the song so special & unique apart from her lovely voice & music accompanying her in this movie is what it was conveying in the movie... Don't know if you've seen the movie or would even like it, if you did... But the story behind the song being sung on stage & people involved & decisions having to be made is what make it so special, unique, sentimental, moving, romantic, & so much more... Anyway, I'm going to listen to Linda Ronstadt's & Barbra Streisand's versions...

First ran across this film about 15 years ago on television and, as I didn't think much of the movies coming out at that time, I had low expectations (I also didn't realize it had been made in 1995). I was surprised by its quality, to say the least. However, when the narrative introduces the Rowena character, the film climbs to a much higher level, leaving me stunned by the end of the big Gershwin performance, so gracefully followed by the bus stop good-bye scene. There's a lot going on when Rowena enters the picture (Holland's "chance" to escape from what feels like drudgery, it comes when he's hit middle-age, the tension between him, Rowena and his wife, etc.), and the impact of it all is contributed by Jean Louisa Kelly's talent in no small measure! She's outstanding.

I love this rendition too, although there have been some amazing takes by Sting, Ronstadt, Julie Andrews etc still something about this scene and Jean Louisa's beauty and innocence, pure voice combined with the dramatic elements around Mr Holland and his wife and the longing he knows better than to act on always get me. This song is a true masterpiece though and it always gets me when it's done well but something about this scene and the execution goes beyond a well-executed rendition.

Can you tell us more about this scene? Any sense of why they re-did it several times? Did Dreyfuss get any direction or coaching for this scene that you remember? I'm presuming this was lip-synched in some way? Thanks!
@treewalker10704 жыл бұрын
@@hawkrider88 Hello. It is normal for movies to film a scene over and over from many different angles. If you watch a scene, say where people are talking, every angle is a different take. A big-budget movie can easily spend all day filming one minute of the final movie. When you turn on the TV to some unknown show, you can tell within sixty seconds if it is a theatrical movie, a made-for-TV movie, or a weekly television drama. The different looks are based on how much time is put into filming from different angles. As for lip-syncing -- she was certainly singing, but I imagine she also re-recorded in a studio, because actors in movies actually dub in their *spoken* dialogue after filming if the sound recording is not ideal, for example, if they are outdoors or in a real house instead of a soundstage. This (along with sound effects) is part of what is called post-production sound, and it is a big part of a movie's budget. Indie films usually don't have the money to do that and that is why their sound isn't as good. if Richard Dreyfuss got any coaching, it probably happened during rehearsal, before they filmed with us extras. But there was a real conductor just off camera conducting the orchestra, and Dreyfuss was following his movements.
@hawkrider884 жыл бұрын
@@treewalker1070 Hey thanks very much for the reply and inside info. I have heard that most dialog is re-recorded again in the studio but Wow...that seems like a lot of work for an entire movie!
@treewalker10704 жыл бұрын
@@hawkrider88 They mostly only do that when scenes are filmed outdoors or on location, because the sound can't be perfect. But a lot of times scenes that appear to be outdoors are actually done on a soundstage in front of a green screen. But post-production sound is indeed part of why movies cost so much to make, and a lot of work does go into movies, as we can see if we sit through five minutes of credits packed with long long lists of names. Anyway, I recalled another moment, after they had done a lot of takes focusing on her, and a lot of takes focusing on Mr. Holland from various angles, I remember the cameraman moving in front of the front row of the audience, crouching down and shoving that huge camera lens into the wife's face for a couple of takes. At 2:09, when the closeup gets tighter and tighter, it's not a zoom lens, the camera actually moved closer and closer till it was like a foot from her face. Couldn't see her expression from behind, but could imagine it, because Rowena's seductive manner was obvious even from way back in the audience.
@treewalker10704 жыл бұрын
And, by the way, rewatching the scene, it does sound like the song was re-recorded in a studio. That is not the sound of an echoey auditorium and she sounds miked very close. The final scene definitely was, the orchestra didn't sound that good live.
