Jean Rondeau, the imaginative young French harpsichordist, describes the Bach family as “one of the great dynasties of western music”. Having devoted his first Erato disc, Imagine, to works by the towering Johann Sebastian, he now returns to Bach’s world for his third release, Dynastie, which complements concertos by Johann Sebastian with concertos by his three most famous sons, Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emmanuel and Johann Christian.

I am 65 years old, and so grateful that these young people are taking these pieces to new heights. In a world where so much seems so much less, knowing that there are people like this out there lighting the everyday way, with this astonishing level of communiction, expression, and technique is hopeful and empowering.

I have watched and listened to this marvelous performance many times and simply can't get enough. The musicians in leisure clothing and putting every effort into the perfection of their musical gifts is so relaxing and enjoyable. I love the way the photographer studies the faces and movements of each each performer. The closing expression of the violinist is simply priceless.

Hardly. If you mean JS - ie *the* Bach - it’s not by him; if you mean JC - the attribution at the top - it’s such an utterly atypical oddity that almost nobody accepts that it is a representative work in any sense. It absolutely does not sum up ‘Bach’s work’ in any way whatsoever as barely a single note sounds anything like anything else JC ever wrote outside the short time he was being taught by his half-brother CPE in Berlin. If you mean WF - to whom this work was previously attributed, you’re probably overstating the case. What is true is that this is a fantastic interpretation of the piece - it is lovely music.
@elaineblackhurst1509
@elaineblackhurst1509 4 жыл бұрын
My comment above appears nonsensical in isolation but was written in response to a comment (since deleted) which in essence said that this work summed up ‘everything about Bach’. It will now read rather more meaningfully.
@raysubsonic
@raysubsonic 4 жыл бұрын
That's actually quite interesting. So it's attribution is in doubt?
@elaineblackhurst1509
@elaineblackhurst1509 4 жыл бұрын
raysubsonic If the work is by JC - to my ears, extremely doubtful - then it will be a very early work. The problem with it being labelled ‘early’ is that it sounds like the work of a competent, mature, experienced composer - JC at the time was none of these things - he was a student. It could only have been written whilst JC was living with his half-brother CPE in Berlin where he had moved following his father’s death in 1750; JC remained there until he set out to Italy and became a pupil of the famous Padre Martini in Bologna in c.1754. If it is JC, then it is CPE’s influence which makes this work so untypical and so different from the sensuous, cantabile, Italian style music that so intoxicated Mozart that we normally associate with him. JC was born in 1735, so he was only around 19 when he left Berlin; as explained above, this music categorically does not sound like the work of a teenager to my ears. Regarding the definitive attribution to JC, I cannot in all honesty claim to know what the latest scholarship is saying, hence in my original comment saying that it was not a ‘representative’ work. That said, until he discovered his own voice whilst in Italy, there are a few other of these oddly un-JC type pieces around, so this concerto could be by JC. It should also be pointed out that the work does have a ‘W’ number: Ernest Warburton catalogued and listed all the works of JC Bach, though this may since have been overtaken by more modern scholarship. In short - not sure; my instinct is that this concerto is not by JC.
@TimWard1
@TimWard1 4 жыл бұрын
Elaine Blackhurst However, I also recall having studied a few of JC’s concertos in a focus semester in college, 6 weeks dedicated to Mozart. It was clear to me with that insight that JC was quite fond of the lighter, more Viennese style, before Viennese was cool. And it was clearly a huge influence on the budding Mozart. (Truth be told, even Leopold Mozart had a lighter style than was common in the first half of the 18th C.)

JC Bach is a very underrated composer imo. Some would say the best in the family after his father. He had an excellent career in London with many successes and much beautiful music created. It's always good to see his music performed on youtube.
@jaikee9477
@jaikee9477 5 жыл бұрын
Certainly not underrated among those who know that JC had almost as much influence on Mozart as JS Bach's other son CPE, another genius who later became Mozart's mentor and father figure. JC, the "London Bach" was incredibly successful in his day. He also introduced the "Wiener Klassik" school (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, etc). He easily makes it into the top 5 most influential composers of all time.

Robertt Avro Listening to this music, it is almost impossible to accept that it is typical of JC, even if it is dated when he was still living and learning with his half-brother CPE in Berlin. The former attribution to WF seems far more likely. Not a note of the entire piece has anything in common whatsoever with anything JC ever wrote in his life (including the g minor symphony Op 6 No 6, and the two c minor piano sonatas Op 5 No 6 and Opus 17 No 2).
@elaineblackhurst1509
@elaineblackhurst1509 5 жыл бұрын
Jaikee Berlin You correctly state that JC was an important influence on Mozart from the first meetings in London and throughout their lives; but only one of very many influences - Mozart assimilated the music and ideas around him to an extraordinary degree throughout his life. You have however totally over-stated the influence of CPE Bach: like all German musicians, Mozart was aware of CPE’s works and theoretical writings, but there is scant evidence of any ‘influence’ in any of Mozart’s works. Barely a note of Mozart’s music could ever be mistaken for CPE, and vice-versa. CPE never became a ‘mentor and father figure’, they never met: the only composer who Mozart would have considered a mentor and father figure was, of course, Haydn. JC did not ‘introduce’ the classical style - no one composer did. JC was one of a large number of composers who from the c.1740’s helped to define a new style of music - galante, rococo et cetera - that evolved into what is now usually termed the Viennese Classical period.

durk kooistra Daddy would have had very few thoughts on the matter as he had already died. On his father’s death in 1750, the 15 year old JC moved to Berlin to live with and be taught by his half-brother CPE. In c.1756, JC moved to Bologna where he became a pupil of the greatest teacher of the age Padre Martini; from there he was appointed as an organist in Milan Cathedral in 1760. It was in order to gain this appointment that many suspect that JC’s conversion was as cynical as it was pragmatic; he would have been very unlikely to be appointed to such a key position as a German Lutheran Protestant. It seems his family were not impressed. JC spent two years in Milan, though appeared to be rather more interested in opera. In 1762, he left, moved to London and spent the rest of his life in that city. He is buried near St Pancras International station in the middle of London.
