I'm about to retire from a symphony orchestra after more than 40 years of playing, and thought I'd heard and played almost everything. I've never heard of this work. It's lovely... hints of his 5th and 7th symphony.

Indeed, the Nocturne sure sounds like the start of Norwegian Wood. How bittersweet romantic!

Beautiful, unfamiliar music to me. I hear affinities with the woodwind writing of Bizet. Hoomeyow!!

I'm hearing these pieces afresh with this interpretation. Was fortunate to catch this on a cleverly-devised concert programme given by Nicholas Collon, a young conductor, contrasted with Schubert's 'Unfinished', showing these pieces to be as inventive as those ideas expanded in a symphony. Then we had Sibelius' No. 7; distilling his affection to the composers he studied into a succinct and completely original statement of intent - with no note wasted. With Sibelius, I find coming back to his scores with his Germanic influences in mind (Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt are the ones I can identify) helps to shed light on a composer who unjustly attracts hyperbole around his solitary personality and is better understood as being a bridge to all the major styles of composing up to Modernism. He is much misunderstood. Then, you add to this his sense of duty and destiny (that probably can't be separated from Finland's own precarious journey to becoming its own independent state; it would be ahistorical to suggest otherwise) in continuing the legacy of the Kalevala encountered in his early compositional career; a composer who knew his own mind whilst always staying true to directly communicating the range of the human experience.

Uma das obras que Sibelius compôs ainda relativamente jovem, aos 33 anos. Começa com um noturno orquestral e termina com uma balada, que tem um fechamento bem épico.

Christian II was a King of Denmark in the early 1500's and had a controversial reign, which was taken away from him, but he still managed to live near 30 years more and died aged 77. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_II_of_Denmark .

It's me or the nocturne sounds like Tchaikovsky?

What?!? No tambourine?? If so, it's totally inaudible! It's supposed to come in, loud and clear, right at the final repeat of the big lovely tune in the nocturne -- it's the climax of the whole piece, and one of the most surprising moments in all of Sibelius! Who would expect him, of all people, to throw in a tambourine, of all instruments? And it's great. Or should be. But it's utterly missing here, which is ridiculous. Go watch the Diablo Symphony Orchestra play it on here, or listen to Jukka-Pekka's version. They get it right.

For the best recording try Alexander Gibson and the Scottish National Orchestra.

Yes. Sir Alexander Gibson championed Sibelius (and Nielsen). I treasure all of his recordings of Sibelius. The SNO under sir Alexander was a top tier orchestra.

The real performer is Tjeknavorian/London S.O. The "Jan Engström" & "New Finnish Symphony Orchestra" is bogus.

I got this information from the CD booklet. Why do you say it's bogus? What evidence do you have?
@Itapirkanmaa2
@Itapirkanmaa2 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrVektriol Because there is no such conductor nor orchestra. In fact check the KZbin auto identification below which states the correct Tjeknavorian. There are other similar Sibelius titles as well around that are really Tjeknavorian and British orchestras.

@@Itapirkanmaa2 Oh, I see... but don't understand the reason for this false indication. I suppose a question of copyright. It was a CD released by Virgin Records in the early 90's. Thank you.

@@MrVektriol You're welcome! Unclear to me why this one, but google Alfred Scholtz for comparison. There is at least one Sibelius violin concerto likely from his stable still in circulation on the net streaming under various bogus attribution. I have it on a 70s Finnish LP, no idea who is actually playing.
