She could have been cast in a high-profile role as an intellectual, perhaps a scientist and/or an academic. She was so good in everything she did. I loved how she sang in "Funny Girl," "When a girl isn't pretty like a Miss Atlantic City..." She was also good playing Sante Kimes victim (played by Mary Tyler Moore) in a very creepy TV movie about a famous and bizarre murder case.

Stapleton's acting has been as responsible for advancing the American agenda as those of us who marched, sat in, protested and resisted. Of course she was not alone--Lear, O'Connor, Reiner--all should take a proverbial bow and credit for the ability of our nation to overcome racism, sexism and a heap of other ills. Humor, truth, compassion, all powerful tools. Kudos to All In the Family for the years of professionalism and even managing to enjoy themselves in the process.

Jean Stapleton created one of the most beloved characters (Edith Bunker) of 20th century sit-com drama--in probably the best sit-com drama of all time--All In The Family. And there WAS drama in addition to the humor, often episodes with tear jerking realizm. My wife and I still watch the re-runs. Fantastic show!

She did a play in Toronto years ago and I met her, she was ok, but yelled at a guy for taking a picture without asking her. She can be nasty if she wants to be, but a great actress. I remember when Edith died too very well and it was emotional, all these characters on All in the Family seemed like real people. I can still watch the show today and relate with these characters.

I grew up on this show. I watch it recorded now. I think it set the stage for further controversial "observational" humor - like Seinfeld, and Curb. Truly a classic, a view changer. I will enjoy this even in 20 years from now, as human mental evolution takes a slow pace, and all those issues, even over a different background, are just as relevant today. Well done :)

Things seem to often work out for the best in TV with actors somehow. Edith was a part no one could have played but Jean and in Murder she wrote, it was just not a Jean role so Angelia got it and took it to the heights Jean to Edith to in that show. I know, Jean would rather be remembered as an actor than just Edith but I'm sure she understood and is okay with the fact that most of us will remember her as Edith. It was a show before my time yet it seems just as relevant today as it obviously was at that time because we have similar problems today and for the new civil rights movement which I think is the LGBT instead of the one for women and black people, there are Edith Bunker's out there who will win over the Archie Bunker types as is always the case since good always wins out and the right thing always happens as time goes on.
@gma61711 жыл бұрын
I absolutley adored jeans character of Edith Bunker. Reason being Edith reminds me of my step mom and Archie had similarities of my Dad. Neither of my parents was racist though. I wept like a baby when Edith passed. My heart broke for Archie, she was his reason for breathing.

All In the Family definitely influenced the thoughts and hearts of America...so many of us saw our fathers in Archie and our mothers in Edith...I wish I had a $ for every time I called my dad "Archie" during those years...that show really did help to free folks from the little "acceptable" barbs of bigotry which most people did not even realize enslaved them ....

Its a shame she didnt embrace the Edith character. I understand not wanting to be type cast. But when its clear you are not going to reach that level of success again she should have went with it. If she would have done the "Edith" commericals and cameo's. This character would have been much larger than it is now and opened up many other doors. To many celebrities let a role, character, or song destroy them. Make another character memorable and people will forget the last one.

His character wasn't one dimensional by any means, something missing w/ the cookie cutouts on TV today. Also, Edith was not dumb. No formal education but very perceptive & wise. What often seemed like babble led to great insights & wonderful advice. She may not have been educated but she was very smart & what she lacked in knowledge she more than made up for in wisdom & love. Archie & Edith=two of the greatest characters on TV. Jean & Carol=two of the greatest actors in any sitcom ever.

I think her intelligence and ego prevented her from seeing what an icon she actually was in that role at that time in history. Some actors/actresses appreciate it and know that they are that character to the public and are appreciative and accept it. Then you have some that allow their ego's to get involved and say they tried so hard NOT to be associated with the famous character they played. Type casting is a fear but it goes deeper if they feel it is beneath their dignity.
