In the explanation of the present perfect you say that it describes an action that started in the past and continues till now, while in the coparison between the present perfect and the present perfect continious you say that the continuious describes an action that started in the past and now is unfinished. So, there's no much difference in this sense, right? What is the difference in this example? I've lived in NY for 4 years. I've lived in NY. I lived in NY in 1990. Do those 3 sentences refer to a fact that the action of 'living' ended at a time before now and I am not living in NY now? In case the first sentence refers to an action that started and ended before now, how can I use present perfect tense to refer to an action that started in the past and continues till now?

Remember that the present perfect MAY describe an action that started in the past and continues until now, but there are other functions of the present perfect as well. You can be sure the present perfect is past to present IF there is a time frame with it, using 'since' or 'for.' So then, what's the difference between present perfect with 'since' or 'for', and present perfect progressive with 'since' or 'for'? Well, that could be another whole video, but I can say that if it is a stative verb, of course you will use the present perfect, and if it is an action verb the present perfect progressive is generally preferred. That said, there are some verbs, most notably 'work', 'live', and 'study' (basically, actions or conditions that exist most every day) for which there is very little difference between using one tense or the other. In your New York examples, 'I've lived in NY for 4 years' means from four years ago until now. Again, if you use the present perfect with a length of time, that means it is from a past to a present time. 'I've lived in NY' means it was at a time in the past that is now finished. It does not mean 'until now' because there is no length of time with it. The third sentence means that in the year of 1990, I lived in New York. It indicates that I just lived there that one year, because if it were for a longer period of time, I would more commonly use the past progressive "I was living in NY in 1990."
