Hey Jean! So glad to see, as a Portuguese citizen, a José Saramago's book on a booktuber's TBR! One of my absolute favorite books of all time is his, which is Death with Interruptions. It deals with the consequences of a sudden stop to death in a certain country and you get the perspective of the government, the church and the general population on this situation. You also get Death as a character at a certain point. It is a book that makes you think about things you've never considered before, while also being extremely funny and sarcastic throughout. I'd recommend that one over the one you have, although I've never read yours, just because it is truly amazing.

This is exactly what i was looking for. The whole of booktube is flooded with people just reviewing YA (Evenif the reviewer is their 30's!). Very few people like you are a great blessing to guys like me who not only loves YA but also almost all other genres in books.

I can't wait to hear what you make of Emily Wilson's translation of The Oddyssey! I already like the sound of her translation from what you've said here, it's so interesting (and important to think about) how translation can be so affected by the cultural and historical biases of the translator.

Thanks for your recent intriguing description of the Binti series by Nnedi Okorafor. I picked it up on your recommendation and am now partway through the second one :) (on a weird 'not my usual' reading kick-I've read both romances and sci fi lately, neither of which are my usual fare!). So thanks again for helping broaden my horizons! I'm extra psyched to have discovered I like her writing bc I *did* have Akata Witch on a 'to maybe read someday' list, and didn't even put together that the author also wrote Binti/has such a backlog!

The poetry collection on expatriation sounds really interesting! It's such a difficult - and timely - topic in current society where so many people move countries, or even continents, and can't always define themselves easily (personally I lived in England for 12 years before moving to Germany at 28, and was very confused - and felt quite misunderstood and strange - when so many people would say I was "going home"...) Really looking forward to hearing your reflections on this!!

I forgot to mention that season 3 of the serial podcast starts on the 20th of September and it’s all about the criminal justice system in America. They have a trailer that you can listen to right now and it sounds like it’s going to be fantastic. I’ve been reading heaps of books about prisons and the courts that send people there and the judges that say to these people to just take a guilty plea instead of risking more prison time. More then half of people in prison are there without having had a trial!! Which is their right to have. Anyway I’m super excited for it to start and thought it might interest you. 👍🏽

I'm not sure if The Elephant's Journey is the best one to start with Saramago (I liked it but didn't love it ). I highly recommend you to start with Death at Intervals or Blindness. If you're feeling ambitious Baltasar and Blimunda (which is assigned reading here in Portugal) is brilliant!

Rereading a Dutch translation of The Odyssey for uni at the moment, but I would really love to read Emily Wilson's translation some day. Most other stuff I'll be reading is probably going to be uni books for the most part as well, among which is Ian McEwan's 'Saturday'.

Euripides's "Phoenician Women" - like Lochheads' "Thebans," apparently - retells the Theban story from a broader than usual perspective. Our extant copy is believed to include several post-Euripidean interpolations but it's a very good read. - The colors of the "Athena" book do funny things to my retina.

Summer seems to have suddenly disappeared in the last few weeks... but anyway, you have loads of books to look forward to reading! I don't tend to read a lot of poetry but I like the sound of Measures of Expatriation - I study languages and cultures, and as someone who had to recently spend a year abroad, I always find themes of identity really thought-provoking and relevant. I've read José Saramago's Ensayo sobre la ceguera, I saw on Goodreads that it's titled Blindness in english, but a better translation would be "An essay about blindness". I really loved that book, people suddenly go blind and he uses that blindness to show how sometimes people "turn a blind eye" on things, like the unfair treatment of others. It shows how things can bring the best or worst of humanity to the surface.

I’ve only read one Saramago & that is The Elephants Journey, I loved it, although Mr B always tells me it’s pretty different to his others so i guess it depends if you want a good feel for him straight away? I found it really charming in an oddly disjointed way, I don’t know how else to explain it! Xx

How could we say no aha!? Ooh that's interesting to hear, I might start with it then if you enjoyed it but keep in mind it's quite different. I suppose that makes sense as the ones people tend to recommend seem to be his darker stories like Blindness and Death at Intervals.

So Homer was not as sexist as the modern translators? Was ancient Greek sexism different from modern sexism? Has someone actually categorised the degrees of sexism? Sorry for bombarding you, but I'm now curious. Have you done a video on this that I've missed?
@JeansThoughts
@JeansThoughts 6 жыл бұрын
I think you should check out Emily Wilson on twitter where she has shared lots of interviews etc. that will explain what I mean. It's not about being less sexist or more sexist, ancient Greece was strictly patriarchal but that doesn't mean you can casually apply modern concepts to it. It doesn't mean they universally condemned Helen and outside of this some translations have translated things in a way that makes them seem less serious and misogynistic than they actually are in the text.
