I've never dreaded the top 10 books question! As a reader I've always found it a wonderful way of getting to know another reader. Your selection of "Daphnis and Chloe" and Terry Pratchett should surprise no one! Many of the other names I suspected *might* appear on your list but Pratchett and the Hellenistic era works were the only ones I felt pretty sure about. A wonderful video, Jean. My all time-favorite book, since you asked: the complete plays of Sophocles.

I was so excited to find to find someone on booktube who's talking about some of my favorite books, especially things that were popular before booktube became a thing. You mentioned like 3 of my favorite series. I'm glad that these beloved books are getting some love. I think my favorite book of all time is The Princess Bride. It's just so funny and sweet and smart and I've read it more times then I can remember.

So thrilled to see a Hobb book on your list! I always think it's so interesting when people have read Hobb's books out of chronological order (which is perfectly OK, of course), but I highly recommend her earlier (and later) books in the Realm of the Elderlings series. I actually think Rain Wilds is her weakest, but it's still a fantastic read!

I love the similarities in our favourites! The Hitch-Hikers 'trilogy' has been on my favourites list for as long as I can remember and it has never been bumped off. Watching one of your videos i was introduced to Terry Prachett and Going Postal quickly joined my favourites list too. The Penelopiad is pretty up there for me and I have recently just started listening to the new Stephen Fry audiobooks of Sherlock Holmes which are thoroughly entertaining! Oh and the Robin Hobb books have been on my TBR pile for a while so I'll get there eventually :D

I read Going Postal off of your recommendation and not only did I love it to pieces, but it also made me reconsider Douglas Adams, who I had not enjoyed as much on my first read through of Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. Thanks for the recommendations and I may have to try more!

So excited to see Daphnis and Chloe on this list as I've only just discovered it. I'm writing an essay on it at the moment as part of my Women's Studies masters and I think it's fascinating. I'm going to go back and watch your other video on it now for more inspiration! Also so wonderful when there's a book that influences your life so much, like The Penelopiad leading you to study Classics. My similar experience was reading The Yellow Wallpaper as part of my English Lit undergrad - that sparked me on the path to studying Women's Studies!

Somehow I've never read hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, but you talking about it has convinced me I must read it!
I had a class on women's rewriting today and the lecturer mentioned The Penelopiad and AHHHH I already wanted to read it but now I want to read it even more! I managed to guess The Penelopiad, Daphnis and Chloe and Hold Your Own and I was hoping for The Dragon Keeper, since I bought that because of you! :) Although I have yet too read it, it's been sitting on my shelf, patiently waiting for my uni reading pile to stop threatening to fall over and crush me with its (mostly metaphorical, since a lot of it is digital) weight.

Nothing tops Sherlock Holmes. I discovered SH during my teens and have been a MASSIVE FAN ever since. Love HHGTTG. Penelopiad left me breathless. Been an ardent reader of Greek/Roman myth/lit for as long as I can remember. Margaret Atwood's retelling was stunning! Going Postal...I can spend a lifetime talking about how much I love that book (and Discworld overall). Your videos introduced me to the series some time back and I have been not only reading the series but also learning Sir Terry Pratchett as a writer. Wonder if you have read A Slip of the Keyboard, which collects his non-fiction writings, most of them describing his take on Fantasy, writing business and his own journey as a writer.

I've still never read The Hitchhikers Guide, Going Postal or The Penelopiad. I should rectify both these things. Though Hitchhiker's scares me a bit. You sent me Daphnis and Chloe, I really need to get to it. Loved this video as it also gives loads of insight into your reading journey, cliched as that sounds.

Great video! I definitely had to get around to watching this sooner as oppose to later and I felt that now would be that time. The only one I read from this list was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which kicked off the fifth season on our channel. I would say that there are several participants on my channel that would agree that it was a favorite of theirs. While I felt it was a good read and a four-star book (out of five), what fascinated me even more about the book was the examination it had on human thought and how absurd and naturalistic it really was. I blogged about how I felt all that mattered was matter and thought the choices for the two smartest animals were mind blowing. I do need to read Sherlock Holmes, some ancient texts, and a friend of mine got me Eragon for Christmas one year and I really need to explore that. I have read many more standalones during the last so many years, aside from a series my friend's mother wrote, but perhaps I should look into it. I JUST got the Italian Folktales collection put together by Italo Calvino. I am really picking up enthusiasm for checking out multicultural folktales and fairy tales, more so than modern retellings, for I feel there are so many tales I need to explore before thinking about alternate stories based on things I am already aware with. Thank you for sharing and I will keep my eye out for your favorite children's books! :) -Josh

Mine in no particular (one per series) order are.. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince- I think it’s my favourite because it is probably the darkest and most emotionally engaging of the series. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson-The novel that introduced me to Scandi-crime when I was a teenager. I devoured it. Angels and Demos and Deception Point by Dan Brown- Because of the accessible writing I was able to read them in my early teens one I wasn’t really into reading. Both are the perfect thrillers. The Defector by Daniel Silva-It’s the perfect espionage thriller. The Fifth Woman by Henning Mankel- One of the most brutal and gripping Scandi-crime novels I have ever read. Warlander is such a believable character Italian Shoes by Henning Mankel- One of the most emotionally engaging books I’ve ever read. It would make a great film. The Tortilla Curtain by T.C Boyle- It really opens your eyes to racism and what people are capable off. It will stay with me forever. Holes by Louis Sachar- Probably one only novel I was forced to read in school that I actually enjoyed On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves- Not usually the sort of novel I go for but I found it to be an intriguing story. Again it would make a fantastic film.

No not really. I read The Penelopiad before I'd read any ancient literature what so ever, as a teenager and it played a large role in furthering my interest in classical lit, beyond my existing interest in historical artifacts and documentaries. It's not written to be read exclusively by people familiar with the original, it's just a great book and it might inspire an interest in you too :D. Or read The Odyssey first if you fancy - no rules ;).

I'm currently reading Brandon Sanderson's 'The Final Empire' and it's becoming one of my favourites. Have you read it?

Yas! Murtagh was definitely my first proper literary crush; I also love Nasuadda as we get to know her better in the later books. I have not yet but I do want to. I have the first one on my kindle :D I guess I'm daunted by all the praise aha.

Nasuada is such a strong female character, especially in Inheritance! I also always found Angela quite interesting and always wondered about her background (hoping it will be revealed at some point in the future) All the praise is deserved! To begin with I was uncertain but now I'm hooked. The only thing that daunts me now is that the second book seems to be 800 pages long according to Amazon... I think you'll enjoy it though. Rereadability is important for favorites, couldn't call a book I just loved without rereading a favorite either. Hitchhiker's Guide is definitely also on my list, and couldn't decide on a Pratchett, clearly read the early ones the most often. It's not hard to guess that the Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson and the Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger are on my list just as well as The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger. Also Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer...okay gonna stop here now, lol.

Right! You need to know it stands up to a re-read I think. Equal Rites is definitely a close second to Going Postal but I felt including one was enough aha because obviously I love the series in general.
