JeanRichard was, not long ago, a watch that carried high expectations and was well received. But now, it is a brand that appears to be a here today, gone tomorrow watch.
Plus some of the top watch brands are now being sold on home shopping networks at some shockingly low prices.

I purchased a Daniel Jean Richard about 10 years ago at flea market - yes it has been authenticated and I think this model was made in 2002. This model was made for the Lancia Martini racing series and particularly for the 1983 Lancia road rally victory with a picture of the car on the back of the case. It is a numbered edition, but I do not know much more than that, I was told that it was made for the European market. I have researched it and sent e-mails to Kernig Group - but don't know much more.

Hey, John! 'Grats on what sounds like a great find. I know Gino Maculso was a passionate collector of Lancia so that could explain the watch. But I don't think it was a GP movement, if yours is a chrono..that model most likely used a 7750. Still, I haven't seen your watch in some time but I recall it is nice. 👍 😁

Hey Rich, outstanding video! I had no idea some of the "golden children" of the luxury world were following suit with Invicta. I would have never even considered buying many of these brands due to the outrageous retails before, but now this makes things interesting. It's no secret that a big chunk of the high prices on luxury watches comes from supporting all the overhead of selling through brick-and-mortar ADs at lower volume. A good example from another industry would be the hi-fi audio company Schiit. Their founders are engineers who came from a background of working for high end audio brands who back in the 80s and 90s sold exclusively through specialty "luxury" audio dealers at outrageously high MSRPs (think $20,000 CD players) to ensure a nice profit margin on top of all the dealer costs. Schiit wanted to break away from that model, so they founded their company to focus mainly on high quality with no frills and to sell everything direct to consumers online. So far, they have been very successful with that approach whereas most of the independent hi-fi audio hobby stores that I used to visit back in the day are all gone. If this HSN trend continues, I wonder if we will similarly see more physical luxury watch ADs go out of business or drop brands who opt into the HSN model. Will only Rolex ADs survive the impending apocalypse?
@whatsonthewrist
@whatsonthewrist 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Tim. Great hi-fi story. I wonder if this is like Al & Ed's Autosound in LA. The scary thing for b & m's is everything that sells watches for less becomes a serious threat. Probably as early as 3-4 years ago, b&m's all laughed at the thought of hsn's being a legit competitor. Blockbuster Video had a chance to buy out Neflix for $5 million early on because they scoffed at Netflix's business model of mailing dvd's to customers and streaming. Who has the last laugh now? Thanks so much and for your great story. 😜🚙 📻

Interesting video re selling on tv and other non traditional distribution channels. I would submit that the best distribution channel for selling watches is, and remains, the non-chain family owned jewelry store. The chain stores have never been able to squeeze out these family owned jewelry stores. They offer a high level of personal service, can offer discounts consistent with their AD agreements, take trade ins, etc. it's still my favorite place to buy a watch. At my AD, on Rolex, in addition to whatever discount you negotiate, they give you a $500 off coupon on any watch, regardless of brand, you buy in the store, good for 3 years.

Hey, celestialfix! Sure I feel many of us love to visit our local AD, but admittedly deep discounts kinda trumps our local support unless it's not a big difference then b&m all the way. Only concern with coupon being good for 3 years: will the store still be around then? I hope so. 😱👌

Hi, deconstructedluxury. Well, Ashford came after JR’s demise which is when Ashford started selling them by buying up their inventory and became a JR AD. Thanks for doing a review on this forgotten Brand! Come to think of it, I haven't heard anything from them for a couple of years. They seem to have just quietly stopped production, since they basically have no dealers anymore. It's sad because, I agree that they had a very good product and unique ideas: a modular, shared use movement, and modular cases shared between models. Jean Richard is not really like the "revival" brands of Breguet, Blancpain, Chopard or A. Lange, but more of a ninties startup, with a "made up" history. I guess they had trouble figuring out a viable strategy, since they seemed to make a lot of changes over the years. They started out as an affordable, ETA-based dress line in the nineties, then morphed into a high end line with a nice in-house movement in 2004, that was actually more advanced than GP. Why did they decide to compete with GP? Probably because the original DJR was not doing that well and perhaps did cheapen the group's image. They probably felt JR appealed to a younger buyer than GP, so could move upmarket. They did offer a sports model, the Diverscope, and priced it at over $10K. But, they failed to gain market share, and so morphed into an affordable, Sellita-based extreme sports line about 2011. This last line up seemed to be on track and I don't know why it failed. It was designed by the guy that did the Hublot Big Bang,. I thought the modular case concept was clever, and looked nice, like what Genta might have created if he designed the Big Bang. It kind of followed their modular movement idea. I don't feel the fact their cheaper sports models shared the same configuration with the more expensive, dressier 1681 watch, really hurt them that much. It's never been a problem for the Royal Oak and Offshore. Since partnering up with Kering, they seemed to have some good distribution in place, primarily in the US, but also some in the UK, Hong Kong and Mexico. So I have to think their biggest problem was probably a lack of visibility in a crowded marketplace. More advertising may have helped. But I still love my Jean Richards that I snatched up cheap from Ashford... The TV Screen with JR1000, and the Terrascope!
@whatsonthewrist
@whatsonthewrist 6 жыл бұрын
Hey, Dan. Great detail here, you could have made your own video. 😁 I feel I should have splurged an extra $200 for the 1681 even with the in-house movement. I like it's dimensions better than my Aeroscope, but I still like mine. Yes, I agree (tho very similar to each other) the JR's are attractive and very well-made. I think it was their confusing pricing that did not go well for them because of high MSRP and low actual cost. This affected their positioning. Such a shame. 😜
@misterfreeze6545
@misterfreeze6545 6 жыл бұрын
Ha, I tend to get carried away with watches! Yeah for only $200 more, the JR 1000 would have been a steal!! It's really a first rate movement. They used it as a base for the new GP 1800. Being a small movement, I think it looks best in the JR Ronde or TV model. Speaking of movements, I'm sure sharing design production costs for in house movements also factored into their decision to use it in both brands... something even the big Groups are keen to do. My understanding is that the movements were made in the same Sowind workshop. Cases, dials and other parts for JR come from separate suppliers. But like you say, they were really competing with themselves, and given similar prices, it's not surprising customers went with GP over JP. A brand has to have the volume and price points to make in house mvmts work... JP didn't. I think Frederic-Constant also lost their shirts trying to go in-house, and is probably why they had to sell to Citizen. Eterna's seems to be a flop also. If you look at Concord, they struck out with the big, expensive C-1 and never really came back. Last I checked they were selling them off in the Movado outlets cheap. Then they tried to sell some cheaper models on their own website...

Hi Rich, Some people buy a watch for the snobbery and really can't stand it when somebody else they know got the same model as they have. Others buy a watch because they like it for what it is. One day I'll bump into a Casio calculator watch and buy one (born in 72). And yes Dallas... Look at the watch channels and differences in opinion. Even some in the know of Patek and such do enjoy a Seiko or Casio. Take Jay Leno, he can enjoy a Duesenberg as much as a little Fiat 500. And that is the true enthousiast.

Thanks for the video, but i just wanted to point out some errors regarding the JeanRichard brand that you said in the video. JR didn't first come to the US market in 2013/2014, they have been in the US market since at least the early 2000's and probably since the 90's, under DJR and then later JR. It was around 2004 that they dropped Daniel from the name and began to go with more in-house movements. DJR's did not have inhouse movements, they had ETA movements, although some of the DJR's were higher priced watches. I bought my first JR watch in 2007 from an AD in San Diego, CA after seeing one in the Tourneau store in Las Vegas. I saw my first DJR model in an jewelry/watch store in the Mission Viejo mall in 2002. The version of JR that you are referencing in the video (the watch you own for example) if from relaunch of the brand on 2012/2013. From 2004 up to that point, the brand had been trying to go all inhouse, but as you mention, had a difficult time because they had GP as the higher end, in house brand. So JR decided to go back to ETA movements (in this case Sellita), but kept 1 inhouse movement watch, in their 1681 line (a cushion shaped version and a round version; the round version is no longer on their site). Prior to that relaunch, between 2004 and then, they had mostly inhouse movement watches. I currently own 6 JR's (no DJR's), 3 of which have the inhouse JR1000 movements and the other 3 have ETA movements. The 3 with the ETA are all between 2004-2007 production. The JR1000 watches I own are from prior to the re-relaunch of the brand in 2012-2013, with the exception of my 1681 Ronde (white dial, sub-second). I also have a Highlands (black dial) with the JR1000 (they also made a highlands with an ETA), and a Bressel 1665 Alternativ (silver dial).

Hi, Anthony. Well, there were some DJR's with in-house (made by GP but exclusively for DJR). 'Grats on your collection as you are definitely a big fan as was I. Hence, my purchase...tho I'd now prefer the Terrascope in 39mm. I find the 44 still wearable because of the very short lugs. Who knows, maybe these will be somewhat of collectibles. Ashford's current prices are closer to $1k but they routinely change. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed your stories. 👍😁

I'm not aware of any DJR's that use inhouse calibers, do you know which model or models those were? I'm not an expert on their DJR line, so it's possible, it's just that I have never heard of it. I wasn't really a big fan of their 2012 re-lauch line of watches - Terrascope, Aquascope, Aeroscope, and 1681. I liked the 1681 line the best of the newer lines. I felt that all of those "scopes" were too large and too similar of each other. I like their older lines pre-2012 and post 2003 - TV Screen, Bressel, Paramount, Diverscope and Chronoscope. they even had a Haute Horlogerie line with a Tourbillon, a minute repeater, a perpetual calendar, and rattrapante.

Yes, they made some fantastic early pieces...really too bad they never caught on. They were so much better than their relaunch under Grande from 2012. During the holidays the prices were quite attractive.

Exactly, yes I meant Aquastar...we'll blame the automatic spell corrector. 😜 You seem to have the greatest JR collection of anyone I know. Nice to meet someone like that. 👏

I couldn’t help but watch the Seiko show on HSN the other day for amusement. Heard at least a half dozen things from the hosts that were laughably untrue. Best was when one host asked the other where the “turtle” got its nickname and he told her the guys at PADI made it up 😂

Hey, Land Scapes! You should have called in and demand an oral retraction plus a free Seiko for making you sick. I wonder what kinds of bonus accessories HSN included? Extra straps perhaps? 😜📺

That Flex-Pay, sounds like a line of credit!
@whatsonthewrist
@whatsonthewrist 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, iDid. No the flex pay is from our own credit card. They simply debit the agreed amount each month. It's not even a layaway plan, we get the items right away and it remains in our possession as we continue to make our installments. 😁💳

Hey, Mister B! I'd rather show my mistakes/bloopers and have fun with it. Since I've been doing this it makes filming my scenes less stressful to nail it in one take as I know the mistakes are useable. Dallas was way back in the day but they rebooted the series...but it failed. 😱☕️

Hey, The Colony! Thanks so much! I really appreciate you! There are certainly other bigger channels but my style is mine and I'm pleased, others such as you, enjoy an off-the-path watch related channel. I also just put up the newest show today about 2 Grand Seikos, if you have time I hope to see ya there. 👌😜

Surprised that Breitling (one of my favs) is on these networks. Thought that JR was lame and came off arrogant. Hell, don't like these type of fluff names on a dial. So what does one do, watch TV clown hawkers all day to find a Navitimer. Hey, that old joint on Pico where they act like they are doing you a favor by buzzing you in. lol. Best, JP

Flex plan for a watch? Is it just me or most agree that millennial's are living beyond their means?
@whatsonthewrist
@whatsonthewrist 6 жыл бұрын
No you are not incorrect. But the flex plan is not a layaway or a line of credit. It's our own card that they debit each month interest free. Of course you can use their credit card but flex pay is handy. 💳 🤑
