15 hours in a Business class is more or less easy. Sleeping 6 or 7 hours while lying is luxury. 15 hours or longer in the economy class is horror.

It is not as horror as 20 years ago, at least nowadays there are wifi and even if you don't want to pay for wifi, there are still PTV and power plugs in economy, UA was an earlier airline that fly ultra long haul, from mid 90s they were already flying close to 16 hours ORD-HKG nonstop on their 744, there was nothing to entertain you in economy other than the pull down big screen on the bulkhead, you watch whatever is showing on the screen if not bring a book. There wasn't economy plus back then neither, so economy was cramped, 31" legroom and 17" seat width

I disagree. I am blessed and extremely fortunate that I am able to fly biz / first on my long haul trip, and personally I find that after around 7-8 hours, it starts to get long. Absolutely more comfortable and easier than doing it in economy though, forsure.

Hey Jeb! Quick tip for your next 787 flight. If your window is allowing too much heat in, ask for a cover! Its a silicone window cling that the purser has in a compartment near their 1L door!

I did this flight back in 2015 when it was on the A-380. I was assigned the back row aisle seat in economy. It was one of the best flights I have ever had. It felt quicker than my usual flight to LAX.

Living in Australia I have flown on the A380 a lot and I can say it is by far the best "ride" in the sky. All that extra mass smooths the bumps out an awful lot! They are also super quiet inside. I have flown the Kangaroo route, also through Doha and Dubai and to Dallas before they swapped it out for the 787.

A few months before COVID, I flew a Qantas A380 from Dallas to Sydney. Flying from Dallas to Sydney on the Airbus A380 was a remarkable experience. The engines were so big it was almost comical. Throughout the journey, the spacious cabin and attentive crew made it comfortable and enjoyable. The wide array of entertainment options kept me engaged during the long flight, Qantas is a great airline. I still have a picture of the A380 stairs on my phone, an experience I'll never forget!

A few years ago while working on ships, I was lucky enough to call Sydney my homeport…but I had to get there first. American 737 from Miami to LAX Qantas A380 from LAX to Melbourne Qantas 767 from Melbourne to Sydney Awesome flights all around. Qantas service is amazing. The 767 was also a thrill. First time I’d seen a retrofitted classic with iPads hanging on seat backs to stream movies.

I’ve taken this exact flight on this exact airline in business class. In my opinion it was truly spectacular and I absolutely love Australia probably my favorite vacation destination of all times. I went from my home airport in Indiana to Dallas and then from Dallas to Sydney and then we made the return flight exactly the same. I’ve also gone to Australia by flying from Chicago to Seoul South Korea, and then on to Sydney on Asiana. It was also amazing. 😊 ✈️

The A380 - I was one of the lucky Airbus employees to do the "Early Long Flight" tests before it entered into service. 12 hours , but from Toulouse to Toulouse. I still have the rather wonderful souvenir bag & contents we were given. I've since then flown London to Bangkok and back a few times on one. Always enjoyable, even in the economy seats.

Stunning window views Mr Brooks. Agree the shortage of bathrooms is a real issue on the Qantas 787 - especially when everyone wakes up and wants to change. No wifi i suspect is more Qantas penny-pinching - head office more focused on shareholders than customers. Agree the seats are excellent though.

The seats really do look good, especially at the footwells. Many business class pods have footwells so narrow that I can’t really turn over laying down. The worst I’ve ever experienced was on a flight from LHR to CAI on a BA A321 - I had a ‘throne’ single seat (I think the even number rows were double seats), but in lie-flat mode I had a feeling of panic with the tiny footwell and my body lowered to the floor between 2 solid walls. I think that’s when I decided to be cremated!😂

Got to fly on BA A380 this year from DFW to London, and then on the return did the the BA A380 from London to Chicago. We flew in Premium Economy and it was awesome! I was concerned when the pandemic hit and the A380s started to be grounded that we'd never have a chance to fly on one. So I was excited when BA brought them back just in time for our trip to Scotland. I was amazed at how quiet the cabin was and how smooth the ride was!

This was such a timely review. We are flying from LAX to SYD next year. I spent weeks studying reviews for flying via Dallas or LAX, and on a 787 vs the A380. Ultimately I went with the A380 for a few reasons. 1) We are infrequent flyers and do not have the points to upgrade (or the money) so we went with the A380 as it appears the PE product was better. Next, I was struck by your statement you waited an hour in line for the lavatory to change. In numerous reviews, I read complaints about not enough lavatories on the 787 flights. On the A380, there's 60 seats for 2 lavatories, 30 seats per lavatory. Not only that, there's stairs at the back and you can always go down the stairs to the lower deck where there are 2 more lavatories...just in case. Of course, people could come up the stairs but still. On the Qantas 787, there's 194 people (PE + Economy) for 4 lavatories, meaning 48.5 people per lavatory. It's even worse on the AA 787 version, 51 seats per lavatory. So that convinced me to do the A380. Not to mention the A380 was always on my bucket list, having flown the 747 via Air New Zealand years ago.

I've made several flights on the A380 in the last ten years and I can heartily recommend it as an airframe to aim for when looking at flights. I've flown it from Melbourne to LA (and vice-versa), and I feel certain I've flown it at least once between Melbourne and San Francisco... Because I don't have a lot of money to spend, I fly economy. I typically choose seats at the butt-end of the plane, thinking that people tend to prefer *not* to sit there for a whole mess of reasons. My experience on the A380, however, is a little different, and my favourite economy seats are actually on the UPPER deck. The last row in the centre is usually a 2-3-2 config (from memory) but the port-side end of the 3-seats is closed off by a bulkhead. 3 out of 5 trips I've had that row ALL TO MYSELF, which makes it a DIY SkyCouch! I find the WC to be a little more roomy and because you're so close to the galley - and because the upstairs flight attendants have fewer charges to look out for - food tends to be warmer and so does the service! (I don't know - it may also have a little to do with the Caramello Koalas I always share with the flight attendants!)

Hi Jeb, thanks for a pragmatic review of this route on this aircraft. My wife and I have flown this route twice pre-Covid in Economy on QANTAS' A380 and had a great experience both times. Food was good and I was able to sleep which is hard for me. I think being able to walk across two levels in Economy was a great way to stretch our legs. The IFE was great back then. I agree with you that the flight maps are essential for long-haul travel. Access to the lavatories wasn't an issue either. We have also done the hop from Sydney to London a few times on the QANTAS A380 and had good experiences too. That said, often it is the little things that leave the most lasting impression on a trip, and QANTAS not getting the passenger to lavatories ratio correct on the fleet's most modern places designed for long-haul flight is a concern. if you had an issue accessing one in Business Class, what chance do the rest of us in Economy have!!

3:55, Yes I have been on an A380, when I was 8 years old back in June 2017 when I was going to the UK to see family, I believe the airline I flew with on the A380 was Thai Airways since we made a stopover in Bangkok, Thailand from our starting point in Melbourne, Australia where I live to swap planes so we could continue onwards to London, and we were on an A380. What made it more special, we were in the TOP deck of the aircraft! I remember climbing up those stairs to the top deck, and as soon as we started taxiing, I automatically go onto the screen on the seat in front of me, and I watched Shrek, and as soon as the song heard at the start of the film 'All Star' ended, the plane was already airborne, and I knew this was the start of an amazing memorable childhood memory, flying on my favourite Commercial airliner aircraft, and in the top deck of it!

I flew the A380 on British from Chicago O’Hare to Heathrow. I did it immediately after Covid testing requirements were lifted, for fear of never flying the A380! Fortunately, it seems that a number of airlines will keep them around for some time to come. I sat in economy on the upper deck. Super quiet, smooth ride! I would’ve preferred Emirates or Singapore Air, but the British was the cheapest and most convenient. The next time you are in Dallas, make sure you do some plane spotting at DFW Founders Plaza!

I took this flight but the reverse way-Dallas to Sydney. And yes,,it’s a loooooong flight. It was my first time flying with Qantas and I was really, really impressed. Great, friendly service. In fact, I am a musician and band leader and I was taking my cruise ship band to go start a cruise ship contract in the South Pacific sea. Prior to Dallas we had flown from our home in London Canada, to Toronto, and then to Dallas where we had a seven-hour layover. By the time we boarded the last flight, we were legless with exhaustion, having been travelling for 18 hours or so-with a 19 hour flight ahead of us, still. Once on board and settled, I noticed an empty row of seats. I asked the flight attendant if I could move to it and stretch out. After explaining our travel day, she was kind enough to say yes. She said ‘I’m supposed to charge you $250 for that, but you have already had quite a day!’ and gave it to me for free. After taking two Valium (and a Jack and Coke) I stretched across the three seats, made a bed of pillows and blankets, and slept for 7 solid hours. And upon waking, I shared the seat with my band mates in rotation, who were all stuck in crowded economy seats. Add the free bar and great food service to this, and it was a much smoother flight than it could have been. Thanks, Qantas! p.s. It was also the first time I ate a Tim Tam…and now I’m addicted.

I flew in an Air France A380 from CDG to IAD in business class. It was awesome to see it looming at the gate, knowing we would board it. We were on the upper level so that was a cool experience. But the AF business class at the time was a bit dated and, honestly, once inside it’s not dramatically different from other jumbo wide bodies. That being said, I am thrilled I was able to fly an A380. Now I still need to tick a 747 off the list before those all go away.

I had to return a week early missing out on New Zealand so I aheading back there early next year with KLM and Malaysia Air on the way out and Qantas and Air France on the way back. Good (Sunday) morning from New Zealand Jeb and Suzanne😊 I have been lucky enough to fly on the mighty A380 on 3 occasions, with 3 different airlines, though only in economy class, but still a pleasant experience each time. I flew Singapore airlines non stop Changi to London Heathrow, Qantas on the Kangaroo route you alluded to, though in reverse, London Singapore Sydney, though I had hoped to fly on the Dreamliner from London to Perth, but that flight was heavily delayed, meaning I'd miss a connection in Perth, so I was rebooked onto the Kangaroo route flight. The final time I flew on the A380, was with Emirates airlines, on possibly the shortest flight that aircraft operates, from Christchurch New Zealand to Sydney, barely 3 hours in the air. Those journeys were all pre covid, in 2018 and 2019...

We were fortunate enough to grab seats in the upper deck economy section for both flights which has only 5 rows in a 2-4-2 configuration. There was even a flight attendant assigned to our little area which made the experience feel more premium. Years ago your flight from SYD to DFW was serviced by an A380. The biggest thing that struck me was how slow it seems to go when taking off and landing. (It's not, it just feels that way...) Would fly again!

It’s too bad you have to put a disclaimer about being a critic of certain parts of the flight/service, it’s obvious you and Suzanne are passionate aviation enthusiasts and appreciate the miracle of flying on every trip. Keep the great videos coming Jeb!

I flew to and from Perth from London in the space of two weeks in Qantas economy last month, luckily I paid for the exit aisle which made it muchhhhh easier for someone like me. Not having wifi was tough but nice in a way to disconnect. If you're going to get the exit aisle I'd recommend the window seat, I was in the middle on the way there and window on the way back and since you're sat in front of the toilets you have people walking around by your feet so being by the window basically eliminates that.

I think this video doesn't hit too hard. 15 hours in economy is literally torture. Who cares about first/business class when most can't afford such luxury

Great video, Jeb. On my first trip to Sydney, I was on a Virgin Australia flight on a 777 - it was amazing in all respects in PE. The second trip was on Delta in First Class on a 777 - the lie-flat seat made a big difference. It was also amazing, especially the lead Captain who came back and talked with some of us. He had even done a very funny talk outside the gate before we started boarding. You're right - it's hard to find things to do on a 14-15 hour flight!!! I can't wait to go back and take my wife!

Love this channel. Longest flight for me was LAX-SIN on the SQ A359-ULR in premium economy, 2019. Almost 17 hours. Flew the QF A380 LAX-SYD in economy in 2009. Back from BRE on the 744. Lucked out with empty seats next to me on both flights.

With both Qantas and Air NZ now routing their New York services through Auckland I would be really interested in seeing a comparison of SYD/MEL JFK compared to the old route using the horror connection at LAX.

I live in Dallas. I've never flown on an A380, but I'm sure it's a great experience. However, the post-Covid B787 change (from A380) by Qantas for SYD-DFW-SYD is probably a much better fit for the traffic. It's worth mentioning that Qantas now also has a MEL-DFW-MEL non-stop ... again using a Dreamliner. Neither of these flights are daily, but I think they will slowly pick up traffic.

Jeb, I thought I was the only one obsessed with flying commercially! I loved it as a kid and that feeling never went away. My family was laughing at me because I flew my wife and kids into an airport that was further away than necessary because it was an airport I hadn’t been to, ha ha. I wish I could do what you do for a living! I just flew key lime, air, a nine seat turbo prop out of Cortez, Colorado, very fun!

I've done this flight numerous times - both with the 787 service and with the A380 and back in the day when they first launched the SYD-DFW with a 747-400. I'll agree with most of your review. They should be another lavatory on the 787 Business Class. Of all the planes that Qanats has used on this route, I preferred the A380.
