This is a quick video I’ve been meaning to make for a while; something to direct people to when they ask (or want to discuss) what Star Wars is truly all about and insist the Jedi themselves must find balance between the dark of the light when, simply put, they are meant as a counterbalance to the darkness to help achieve and/or maintain a balance for all.

Thor Skywalker what made you want to make this video on your view on the core philosophy of Star Wars as a whole?
@thorskywalker5 жыл бұрын
I get into discussions all the time with people about "what Star Wars is really all about" and although it can mean different things to different people, this is what it meant to George Lucas; this was his message. And its easier for me to direct someone to a video like this then to have to make the same argument a hundred times over. In other words, people who want to debate/discuss this with me can watch the video and then the discussion can go from there. Not to mention, I think (hope) a lot of people will appreciate having it laid out for them like this.

I've read and watched plenty of Lucas interviews throughout my life. And he's explained the balance many times. I'm not sure why people debate it. But when he speaks of balance he doesn't mean equal light and equal dark. That would mean he's advocating being equally selfish and equally selfless. He's speaking of harmony and balance in similar terms to a balanced diet or a balanced life. Lucas said that we are natural greedy and selfish and balance comes when we reach for selflessness which is the harder path. It is recognizing our dark nature and choosing to rise above it. The new Disney movies seem to be suggesting, at least in my mind, that balance means evil and good need to work together or something, and that is pretty much antithetical to what Lucas was trying to communicate.
@thorskywalker5 жыл бұрын
Very well said. And, yes Lucas has described his idea of balance many times... so there really shouldn't be a debate.

KwameAdu 007 It does appear that's the way it's heading, however .... I mean this is the finale ... It can't be that good works with evil, maybe good can influence evil, keep a check on it, but destroy it when necessary. Kylo brings balance with the influence of Ren's love or something like that.... JJ will hit it out of the park. There is a lot riding on this
@lukerope19065 жыл бұрын
wameAdu 007 Isn't that what we see with Luke in TLJ? It isn't until he quits hiding from his own Dark Side, his flaws, and his mistakes. But rather stands up, owns his mistakes, and failures. That he returns, with the Force flowing through him like it had never done before!
@pseudonymousbeing9875 жыл бұрын
KwameAdu 007 Isn't TLJ in fact showing the nuance? While Luke finds that learning from his darkness and moments selfishness is what brings him to absolute selflessness Ren and Rey bring in the yin and yang aspect. Darkness rises and light to meet it. But this doesn't mean the force looks for balance between them. It means that the light comes to meet the darkness. Meet it in battle not join it balance. It is still about the triumph of selflessness, Rey rejects Ren, Luke rejects darkness and the force now comes to a level playing field between Ren and Rey. They're not best buddies, the opportunity for that balance came. Ren proposed the melding of ideologies and spoke of bringing it all down. Yet the force seemed to speak through Rey and she again refused Ren. She quite literally closed the door on him in the last scenes. As much as I adore Reylo the film had to show us that they cannot work together.

Was the term “Light Side” even used in the OT? I can’t remember. I remember Ben and Yoda only every referring to the Force and the Dark Side of the Force. I think I once saw or read an interview with George Lucas saying that the Dark Side is a perversion of the Force, and that the Jedi use the Force in its true form. Balance would mean no Dark Side. I took this to mean that when someone uses the Dark Side, the Force gets “hurt”, and like any wounded being, retaliates, in this case with the Jedi. The will of the Force is to have balance, for the Dark Side to not exist. If a Jedi follows the will of the Force (not necessarily the Jedi Code), then the Dark Side will be destroyed. The Prequel Jedi grew arrogant, placing their own views above the will of the Force. This overconfidence was their downfall.
@thorskywalker5 жыл бұрын
The term "light side" is never used in either the original trilogy nor the Prequels, though Lucas has called it as such in interviews. But, yes, you're right that using the Force for selfish reasons is essentially a corruption of the Force.
@pseudonymousbeing9875 жыл бұрын
Dylan Lewis Qui gon followed the will of the force. Its will was for him to find and train the chosen one. He was perfect for it. Yet the Sith, Palpatine, bent the force to their own will away from perfect balance, the corruption that was maul killed qui gon and broke the story. Again and again the sith stand in the way of the perfect story. If not for Palpatines medling the jedi who created the clone army would never have seen the visions of a dark future needing an army. If not for Palpatine etc etc.

The Clone Wars series goes into the Separatist political agenda in pretty good detail. They wanted true planetary representation by eliminating such organizations such as the Jedi Order, the Banking Clan, Commerce Guild and so forth from having a voice in government. These groups were not allowed a vote in the Senate. Where they did have power relied mainly upon the troops and money they brought into the Alliance. In essence, the only difference was how much business played a role in the politics. In fact, the Separatist Senate actually votes at one point to enter negotiations with the Republic and Count Dooku is forced to abide by the decision.

You described -- right here -- exactly what I've been saying they need to do with Rey in Episode IX. She uses the force without effort, it does *her* will, and she keeps getting stronger. All she needs to do is decide that the war needs to end, as fast as possible, and that those who chose to force this war need to be stopped -- that there is a guilty party, and that there fate is both deserved and sealed. Suppose this is what everyone kept telling her, begging her to do, and she wasn't sure -- and then Finn died in a battle because she was trying to spare someone -- like Kylo. Finally something other than a Sith, and a world class example of why Jedi must be trained. Save another mysterious Sith Bang, which I wouldn't put past them, I can't see what else would entice me to see Episode IX on Netflix. I also expect cameos from every actor from any Star Wars still alive to show up at Leia's funeral. I'm not even sure I can trust it will feel sincere, and that pains me.

Zorastorm 32 "Grey" Jedi is from Legends and was one of the first things to be done away with in the new canon. Which is good. A "Grey" Jedi, was Jedi that drew upon the Dark Side from time to time. Think Kyle Katarn. But in reality, it's an oxymoron. To be a Jedi is to be a studier and practitioner of the Light Side. A Jedi that uses that Dark Side, is no longer a Jedi.

Maybe thats where the Jedi of the republic got it wrong? They tried to create an knighthood of force users that helped the senate to maintain status quo rather than focusing solely on the balance - To be ready when or where the Sith raise to power once more? Hence you might think that the rule of two would be perfect for the Jedi as well? That there only need to be a master and his padawan in order for them to be able to counter the Sith once they are discovered once more - Not to have an entire legion of Jedi whom does theyre best to bring order and peace to the galaxy, a struggle that lead them into the Clone Wars. As you were talking, I was reinforced with my own ideas of what damned Anakin in the end. It's possible that Anakin could have still conducted "aggressive negotiations" using his "lightsaber" with Padme (if you catch my meaning) and been in the right, at least in the eyes of the Jedi. It was only when he married her, legally declaring she was his and completely attaching himself to her, that was what was his undoing. For all we know, the Jedi would have been okay with some "negotiations" going on between them, as long as it wasn't binding.
@christopherbravo18137 ай бұрын
I'm going to be real with you, this is pretty much you imposing your own values upon the Jedi. truth is, they would likely have greater respect for one of their members getting married than if that same individual gratified his personal desires without any real commitment. marriage is a mutual commitment between a husband and a wife, both of whom willingly give themselves to one another, willingly sacrifice their own desires for the sake of the other, and for the sake of their shared future. if that isn't the epitome of selflessness, I don't know what is. Anakin's problem was how he came to perceive Padme as something that he possessed and could not afford to lose. marriage had nothing to do with it.

Thing is, I will always question the prequel Jedi Order for their recruitment of the youth (to easily indoctrinate them into their ways) and enforcing celibacy. In fact, the Jedi Order reminds me of Catholicism and the Jedi Masters are like priests who must stay celibate. I've always been told that Catholic priests are uptight and don't like being questioned by those inferior to their rank. And that reminds me of why the Jedi recruited young, impressionable children so that they would not question the Order's rules, like Anakin did so much. Couple that with living a celibate life, which always made me wonder if there were Jedi with perversions like some priests. Anyways, that is why I always would be wary of the Jedi way, unless Luke evolved the Order's rules and made it more lax. I believe in light and balance, but I don't think one needs to join a cult or secretive order to achieve that. Look at Han Solo. One of the many reasons why people relate to him was because he was arguably the most grounded Star Wars character who didn't need to tap into the supernatural to achieve good. All he needed was a smart, level-headed princess to help him realize the hero inside of him.

but the difference is that Han wasn't force sensitive. He didnt't have the option to tap into the dark side of the force. And that's the problem. The Jedi indoctrinate force sensitive beings at such a young age to ensure that they don't use the dark side. If a force sensitive being wasn't a jedi, there would be a high probability that they develop intimate feelings for another being which we all know will eventually lead to suffering (as yoda once said). The dark side is basically like heroin: once you take it, it will be very hard to get away from it.

Determinism isn't the only valid viewpoint. First of all, we've found that there are things that happen at the quantum level that are truly random, so there's evidence against determinism. Second of all, even if it's technically true, it's for all intents and purposes false. You would need to know more than is possible to make things functionally predetermined, and without that we effectively have free will.

I disagree vehemently with the assertion that a dedicated light-side sect (what the Jedi have tried to be) are needed to be "in reserve" to destroy a Force user taken by the dark side ... or, to be more precise, that this is the BEST way. I think the Jedi need, as a matter of both self-preservation and for a true view of the world, to take a less militant view vs. the dark side. No jedi will be more than human (or Twi'lek or whatever), and to pretend that they are is folly, no matter what power they've obtained. Obviously, a Force user has greater capacity to affect the world around him/her, but the burden of shaping yourself into a stronger person as you grow is no easier or harder for them than any regular sentient. For that reason, I think they should be trained in their powers, taught the history of the galaxy and trained as philosophical thinkers. Leave them with an open mind, and allow the experiences of their usually noteworthy lives to color their take on the Jedi and their role in the galaxy. The great Sith of bygone eras should be discussed, as both cautionary tales and for the lessons they should teach the Jedi. Bad ideas aren't defeated by ending discussion about them and closing the book; they should be encouraged to be spoken when thought, and a discussion be had on its merits. If you're right, it should become obvious with more discussion, not less. I don't know how Anakin's take on the ideal government of the galaxy (that he espoused to Padme in E2) would survive just one open discussion on the matter, with a proper grounding in galactic history. A more Gray order as I outline will likely have less Jedi "falling to the dark side" (I think there's a difference between letting the dark side in, and a fall), but should that come to pass, you will have just as many dedicated Jedi to fight the darkness. Though, nobody's going to buy tickets to see "Star Peace", so for narrative reasons, this should never happen.

Not true about sith not loving! You are forgetting the one thing a sith has over a Jedi and that is passion. Jedi no matter what anakin said they are not aloud to love but sith are absolutely aloud to love
@thorskywalker5 жыл бұрын
Jedi are allowed and encouraged to love... unconditionally. They are not allowed to have "possessive love". Sith, however, take it to the opposite extreme... and think they can control those they "love".... but in reality it's all about them. The ironic part is that Anakin's desire to save Padme is what led him to the dark side--HIS fear of losing her.... and this is also the reason she ultimately rejected him. She couldn't love what he had become; "He was going down a path she couldn't follow." This is all part of the suffering the Sith endure.... No one could really love them, and nothing can satiate their need for power and control.
@fly6725 жыл бұрын

@mr.safensound42385 жыл бұрын
@@rastarapha the true Jedi don't fear death but accept it was a natural thing regardless of whether it is their own death or someone they 'love'. If the Jedi aren't supposed to 'love' any one person more than the other, firstly that is an impossible goal, second, they all did so in the Prequels and were blindly hypocritical to this along with various others of their overly 'idealistic' tenants. It seems however, at least in the case of Anakin, that they were tolerant of anyone 'straying' from their code, and allowed them some room to improve themselves without laying blame and guilt on them. This really makes me wonder why then, was Anakin so afraid or reluctant to tell either Obiwan or Yoda of his troubles and mistakes? We know Anakin seems to fear death, not perhaps so much his own, but first his mum's, then later Padme's. He doesn't accept it and wants to get the power to change it to suit himself. Selfishness of sorts, but this stems from his insecurities. Remember how Qui-gon constantly assured Obiwan of his great abilities and reassured him of his great future. That's exactly what Anakin needed from both Obiwan and the Jedi Council. They instead, continuously doubted him and made him more and more insecure.

Luke’s decision in The Last Jedi to kill Ben in a way was for the greater good. He saw that Ben had destroyed the temple and the Jedi that Luke himself had saved. Luke wasn’t even sure if he could beat him or that maybe Ben would run away and return to do the same thing later when he was more powerful, so in his attempt to save the Jedi from death, which they faced years prior, he made a choice. And even though he didn’t follow through with it, from Bens point of view, it was too late. I mean regardless of who the person is, if you saw someone destroy everything you’ve devoted your life to, which the cause itself was for the greater good, was his decision really that wrong? Yes and no. It was wrong because Ben was still a kid and hadn’t turned yet. But he made the same mistake as his father trying to stop something from happening but causing it himself, but I can see where he’s coming from. He saw Ben kill a bunch of other kids and destroy the Jedi. It’s not like it was an easy decision, you could see how hard it was for him. I’m not trying to defend the Last Jedi, I just wanted to know what you thought because I’ve been watching your videos and you really seem to know what you are talking about. I just don’t want to say it was stupid because there is a reason behind it whether or not we agreed with it.
@thorskywalker5 жыл бұрын
The crazy part is a strong argument could be made that Luke would've been in the right to strike down Ben that night.... but only if he someone knew for certain those things would come to pass and nothing else could be done to prevent them.... which is the real problem because as Rey points out: Luke's mistake was thinking that Ben's path was already set in stone (and it wasn't). Because if Luke doesn't activate his saber, and Ben doesn't wake up at the wrong moment, perhaps Luke can still find a way to save Ben--especially knowing how far gone he is. And though I'm also not trying to defend The Last Jedi here, because it's hard to imagine Luke igniting that saber in the first place, it is a very, very interesting debate nonetheless. I think it all boils down to exactly what Luke saw in Kylo's mind. Just how much death and destruction did Luke see there? Did he also see Han being murdered? I mean these are things that might get such a reaction out of Luke to momentarily considering striking him down to prevent them... problem is they didn't show it and we're only left to assume.
@williamreed27815 жыл бұрын
Thor Skywalker I agree. It isn’t totally out of no where, but it would have been a lot clearer and less controversial had we seen how much Luke saw, if it truly were that bad. And seeing Han being killed by Ben would’ve made his decision more understandable for sure. It just bothers me when people totally dismiss the argument that he did it for a reason. Not because they disagree but they usually won’t have an actual discussion but rather use insults or say everything Disney has done is trash. And I agree with what you’ve been saying for a while, it seems the sequel trilogy is totally separate from the rest of Disney Star Wars. I’m not the biggest fan of the sequels, but I definitely don’t hate them. I’ve really enjoyed Kylos character. But besides that, most of the stuff outside the sequel trilogy has been good and I’ve really been enjoying it.
@AlexKnauth5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think Ben would have necessarily turned if it weren’t for that. As much as I don’t like self-fulfilling prophecies, I think Luke’s visions of Kylo might have been one, just like Anakin’s visions of Padme. The future is always in motion depending on what you do, and sometimes you accidentally bring yourself closer to it by selfishness. Another weird thing: Luke said in a sort-of sarcastic voice, “because I was Luke Skywalker, a Legend.” I think that was a hint that Luke’s little bit of selfishness from being a legend somehow contributed to that decision. The “legend” that everyone expected him to be wouldn’t allow a Sith to rise from his own students. So when he said that looking back he wished he hadn’t been selfishly influenced by that “legend.” Which is why he says it the way he does and blames himself.

Alex Knauth well the thing is that people would have expected of him being a legend was for him to consider killing him even if it was for a brief moment they would have expected him to probably talk to him.

Striking down Kylo would have been like precrime death sentence. Darkside. It's not the Will of the Force. Luke saved Anakin... And vice a versa. We are going to see that again... But without the tragedy of Revenge of Sith or self sacrifice Return of the Jedi. Should be Epic... Don't worry

The originals and the prequels deal with such deep topics and so many motives, characters. While the new movies focus on the problematic relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren, which they portray as healthy and romantic, maybe. This angers me so much. The Star Wars with all the moral lessons, motives, everything, is dumbed down to a drama series.

What most people seem to forget is that the Jedi are a religious order. Sacrifice for the greater good is their reason for being. In the Christian tradition, part of becoming a monk was not only to atone for your own sins, but the sins of others. I know the comparison isn’t perfect, but it seems that the galaxy tends to drift or dive towards the dark side by default. Jedi maintain the balance by swinging hard light. The Sith upset it by magnifying the ever present darkness, even if their selfishness is of the ordinary sort (what most people would call “grey”)

Jedi are absolute selfish in selflesness. Sith are right.

I'm sorry THOR I normally really like your videos but this video about your categorization of the Jedi and Sith are completely wrong. I think you really need to dig deeper into the Jedi and Sith rather than take them at surface value.

Or maybe you need to listen to the words of George Lucas himself: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGnHp5qIiZh-rpo
