This, maybe even more than the 50-0 game, shows how much SC owns UCLA. The Bruins were the ones who dismissed the Trojan gesture of sportsmanship by calling timeout after the knee by Barkley. It was a declaration that the game was not over, and thus an in-kind response was given.
@69FOSTER Жыл бұрын
Just like the 2012 game, ask Barkley. Where was that smirk after the 2012 UCLA-USC game?
@jerseydevs2000 Жыл бұрын
Not sure how the 2012 game was anything like the 2009 game, but yeah it was one jewel within the muck that is the history of UCLA Bruin football. No major bowl wins since the '90s, no Rose Bowl win since the '80s and only one natty back in the '50s. Even when UCLA rattled off a few in a row against SC in the '90s, the Bruins were irrelevant nationally. Just enjoy being LA's hoops school for now, because we're coming for that, too.

That's very similar to what I said as I was watching that game ... called a timeout = we still want to play football; Pete Carroll responded perfectly!

UCLA got what they deserved, game was over, no point in calling the TO. I like this mean streak in Carroll
@frippertonics64215 жыл бұрын
I just heard about this on the Adam Carolla podcast, and I had to check it out. I'm stunned that a Division I coach actually thought this was a good idea. I think what makes me enjoy it even more is Pete Carroll's unbridled joy after the touchdown.
@danfreiberger51373 ай бұрын
Where is the skirmish that ensued? USC was just running out the clock, UCLA stupidly called a timeout, which told USC "hey, they still want to play football so we will play football as well" and scored a touchdown. That crap was all UCLA's fault, don't call the timeout and just let the clock run out! I was watching this game as this actually happened.

The two radio announcers are Pete Arbogast and Paul MacDonald. MacDonald was a QB for SC in the late 70's. The 90's QBs were Todd Marinovich, Rob Johnson, Brad Otton, John Fox, Mike Van Rapphorst, and Carson Palmer; none of whom are announcers. Petros Papadakis does a lot of TV stuff, but he wasn't a QB. He was a running back.

If UCLA is going to play all-out to the end by calling all their timeouts, then why shouldn't USC be allowed to play all-out to the end in response?

Not a fan of Carroll, but in this case I'm with him all the way. His team is taking a knee, and Neuheisal, for some unknown reason, decides to start calling time out. Ridiculous. Neuheisal got just what he deserved, and he probably learned a lesson that night. Maybe that's why he's now in broadcasting instead of coaching.

@34andrew34 your complaint was that they were running up the score. i am talking about the games you mentioned. they were up, not losing. do you even remember what you wrote? it was usc that had the 3rd string in. i was saying washington state. sc had the 3rd string in .

Typo - meant "angry". I attended the game and it was hard to believe a major college coach like Neuheisel would act like a schoolboy, prolonging the inevitable. His losing record in 2010 and general downward spiral portent more football failure for UCLA.

Pete Carroll classless? He tried to end the game. You got less than a minute to go, first down. No timeouts are going to save it at this point. No, the burden of class was on Neuheisal, not Carroll. He should have just let the clock run out and shaken Pete Carroll's hand. Neuheisal could have taken a respectable 14 point defeat instead of a 21 point rout. That would have been better for his players. Call a timeout - hey, that means we're still playing football.
@Magicperson4213 жыл бұрын
its his own fault he called a timeout which led to more time to run another play.
@arminjorgenson599011 жыл бұрын
What do you mean there is no chance? Weirder things have happened. If you can force a punt and get the ball back, you damn sure have the right to do so.
@wesleychang11427 жыл бұрын
Exactly, that is why the correct play was for SC to score another TD. If they continued to take a knee, they were playing right into the hands of UCLA. So UCLA calling a timeout basically forced that reaction.
@newtojo14 жыл бұрын
How totally classless and idiotic of Neuheisel/UCLA to (i) call the timeout when USC was trying to end the game mercifully and then (ii) actually act angy when USC obliges them by continuing to play the game.

I laugh every time i see videos of this play...
@mbjl175815 жыл бұрын
Lets put it in perspective - Weasel - were USC to keep taking a knee would get the ball back with 2 seconds to go and down by 2 scores. It makes ZERO sense to call a timeout - other than to send a message to USC and risk injury. Instead of running additional plays, USC goes deep - score and decreases the risk of injury. So you say, why not just get the 12 yrs (after kneeling on 1-down)? Well UCLA was crowding the line. Weasel was trying to send a message and got burned. A sore loser.

You're definitely right. I'm an SC alumn and a die hard fan, but even I have to admit, the hypocrissy is a little ridiculous. Even before the UCLA game, I was pissed that he even made anything of Stanford going for two. My view: hell it's football... so play football! If you don't like them going for two, then fucking stop'em. But you're right.

Agreed that would have been a respectable option. I just think doing that play call was reasonable too in and of itself. Its how he conducted himself after the play that was unsportsmanlike.

UCLA got exactly what it deserved on that play. They call TO like they haven't given up, then on the play....they give up. If you didn't know better you would think RN was begging for Carroll to do it. Of course Carroll didn't have to act like the evil Karate teacher from "Karate Kid" ( PUT HIM IN A BODY BAG!) after the play. But the play call was reasonable IMO.
