You might want to lube your engine stand pivot point. It's supposed to rotate a lot smoother than it did.

This may sounds funny, but I found that Paint & Epoxy Remover (I used Jasco brand) worked fantastic to get that insanely hard oil buildup off on the timing chain cover (Inside and out). It's also safe to use on aluminum. Took a few coats and some scrubbing but it removed every bit of it very fast.

Pulled my water pump and saw the harmonic balancer was bad. Watched your video foe pulling that, very encouraging. Now that i am into it, I am thinking about changing the timing cover gasket. I recently did the pan gasket. It looks like from your video that I can remove the timing cover without removing the pan. Is that correct?

I am currently fairly deeply into a frame-off restoration of my 2003 TJ. I plan on a full rebuild of my 4.0L but then hope to sell it. I will use it for funds and experience before building and installing a Chevy 350 with TBI. I am so excited to embark on these two long-term projects, but I have to clear out my carport of several other projects before I can get back to the Jeep. Your videos have certainly motivated me to get on the stick and transmogrify a pile of car parts into an empty carport. Great vids. I have watched about ten and just started this series. I have liked them all and just now subbed. I look forward to the rest of this series. Thanks for posting them all!

Curious if you’d know the answer. I have a completely busted off vibration dampener on a 4.0 in my 04 wrangler. Nothing to grab onto. Can I unbolt timing cover & pull off to give me more of the balancer side to put groove in to allow puller

Seeing that chain slack makes me wonder about my 4.0L now.... I kinda hope the slack measurement is at least within tolerance... I already have enough Jeep projects...don't want to have to be worrying about a timing chain now too....lol...

My understanding of timing chains (at least for the 4.0 engines) is that they don't need to be replaced unless they're causing a problem/you notice an issue with how the engine is running. So an engine rebuild/major overhaul service is a good time to do it like Dale is doing but is not a part of "regular" maintenance like a timing BELT would be on a different type engine. Regular maintenance/oil changes should keep the the chain happy.

Is there an orientation for the fulcrums in the rocker arms? They have small oil valley s that are tapered and the rocker arm has a tapered oil valley grooves in the bottom of them too

I used to do stuff like this but I learned (the hard way) that a nice re-manufactured long block is the best way to go. $1800 or so for the 4.0.. lot cleaner and better outcome. Like your videos as you are a very good wrench turner- not being critical here, just saying so others may consider.

Hola. Thanks alot for your videos we really aprecciate your work. I have one question: how often do you sugest to change a timing belt?? i know some people says ... `dont touch it untill it gives you problems`. But, im about to change the seal of the cover and i would like to take advantage of that and change the timing belt. I have a Jeep Tj x 2005. Gracias.
@brokejeepnut1905
@brokejeepnut1905 2 жыл бұрын
Timing chain(these Jeeps don’t have a belt) typically doesn’t need replaced unless you’re doing a rebuild. If it has a lot of slop it would be worth checking the condition of the rest of the engine. You could start with a compression check.

I’m pretty new to the Jeep game (90 4cyl yj), but didn’t the 6cyl engines have a multi plate toothed chain rather than the ansi-like roller chain? That chain looks like a 4cyl chain.

Hi Dale, great vid! That chain is so slacked that it looks like it was slapping the cover. There is a rubber part (chain snubber) that is supposed to be inside the chain cover to prevent this but yours appears to be missing. You'll probably want to buy a master rebuild kit that contains a new gear and chain set.
@JeepSolid
@JeepSolid 5 жыл бұрын
Good eye! You caught that the cover was missing the plastic insert. I have a master rebuild kit I will be going over.

When I was a mechanic, my single most utilized and productive tool I could not live without was my 3/8” Air Ratchet. It will save you hours of time. In my opinion its worth any extra money to buy a quality timing chain and gear set, and not use a generic one in a rebuild kit. Check out the Cloyes 9-3127. Heat treated forged gears true roller. It’s worth it! Amazon $139
@DaveCovert

The air ratchet is great for limited access areas, but on the engine stand the butterfly rules for speed.

And took my timing chain cover off yesterday and it looked exactly like yours. Do you got to replace that little seal where the crankshaft comes out?
@xavierb8545
@xavierb8545 5 жыл бұрын
sincitydude 72 It’s a good idea to do it if you already have it out. I just did my timing chain and water pump today and the gasket kit for the timing chain was $15 for everything. Cheap and worth it.

Hey, I was just wondering if parts from a 1993 jeep wrangler are compatible with a jeep from 1994 and vise versa. Like would a hardtop from a 94 fit on a 93 ? any help would be great. thanks
