Keep up the filming. I’ve actually learned so much about not only a Jeep Wrangler, but motors in general because of your channel. I watch every episode, thank you so much.

Harbor freight sells a new cylinder hone for $17.99 that works amazingly. Love your channel, thanks for the tips on my 98 XJ rebuild!

I uses to run a hone if there was a Very slight scratch in the cylinder. Other wise just a glaze breaker. Just need the uses inter-micrometer or telescopic micrometer and O.D. micrometer to make sure the cylinders are the same. I bored the cylinders out, 030 over uses stock pistons and .030 over rings. Just a touch more HP. I'm just talking. You are doing a great job Bro. Pro. work.
@JeepSolid5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah, I'm just filming the process as I go along. Thought about over boring 0.030, but ultimately didn't. Just standard rebuild. Glad you're following along. It's been a fun process.

I really appreciate all time and effort you put into all your video's on this engine rebuild series. I'm planning on rebuilding my 97 TJ's inline 4 cylinder and AX-5 manual transmission very soon. Your video's along with my Chilton's engine rebuilding manual will have me well prepared for the job. I also have 17 years of experience in the auto service industry so I have the safety side covered. Thanks again

Awesome! Thank you. Yeah, it takes a ton of time, but I really like sharing my experiences and helping others out. It's fun connecting with others in the Jeep community!

The "hone" this guy is using is a "glaze breaker", not a "hone". It is best to glaze break a cylinder with a flex hone. The spring type glaze breaker was all that was available at one time. A ridge cutter should be used for this type of deglaze. Remove the material above the ridge with the ridge cutter (carefully). Use the glaze breaker for a few seconds to restore the x-hatch only where the rings travel. These glaze breakers will remove metal if used for too long, and if you hone too long completely from top to bottom you will increase the skirt clearance. Most of the time you will see x-hatch still at the bottom of the cylinders since the rings don't travel there. You should leave any bottom x-hatching as is. Opening up the bottom clearance is a no no. It will increase the tendency of the piston skirt to rock back and forth. This will cause the ring faces to wear quickly into a slight arc, and bell mouth the ring lands. The result is premature blowby, and pistons that audibly rattle sometimes even after warm up. If the skirts are worn it used to be, and maybe still is possible to have them "knurled". This puts a sort of //// hatch on the skirt by displacing the aluminum outward. You then use a fine :soapstone, or even a knife sharpening stone to "sand" the the skirt hatches down to fit the bottom of the cylinder. The nice part of this process is the knurls hold oil helping (like the x-hatch) to lubricate the pistons and cylinders! If you have micrometers fine , if not a 0.0015 feeler gauge will do the job. OOPs I almost forgot you can also check the ring lands with the same feeler gauge, and if one or two pistons are really clunked out (especially the top ring land) replace them. The new pistons do not need to be knurled. This man has a nice looking garage, and sounds good, but he actually doesn't know what he is doing. This unfortunately is all too common.

Another great video. Im sure this is to late, As a part time employee of those auto parts stores. They don't care about the condition. Just tell them and they'll return it and they damage it out and get a new one. Keep up the videos. Giving me some great knowledge.

+J Wilson Cool. Thanks. Yeah, not too late. Was going to return it yesterday, but ran out of time. I’ll return it soon and I’ll let them know about the stones.

Always so informative! I've got a first engine rebuild coming up in the near future (not a Jeep) so these concepts are very helpful for preparing! The Jeep hopefully will be a while before it needs a rebuild. :)

I️ have a 97 wrangler 4.0 I’m putting new pistons in and I️ need to hone it as you did here. Is there a specific grit you have to use to clean it? Mine has a glaze on it currently like yours did prior to cleaning. Thanks

Don't know if this is an issue, but noticed the new honing tool stones have little chips on the corners? Is that a big deal? And also, does this process (in the way that you are doing it) increase the diameter of the cylinders?

This is a 220 grit. It's also available in 320 or 400, depending on the rings you're going to use.

I know this is 4 years old and I havnt watched all your videos so you may have mentioned and you may not answer, being 4 years. My question: your honing the cylinders for the new pistons and rings. Are the pistons standard or has it all ready been bored over once? Just a question im trying to get ideas with my comanche 4.0

@jdtv...91344 жыл бұрын
You left out a lot of important info. The tension on the tool because it's adjustable. Also be uniformed meaning count the amount of times you go up and down each cylinder and make it even across the board. Also it should be done in two stages with two different grits

Lol you cleaned the stones off very closely, they most likely broke in the bucket and even if you have to pay for it, it is not much $$$ Just saying common sense dude.
