The Cherokee XJ had the command trac or selec trac systems. The Grand Cherokee from 1993-1998 had command trac, selec trac, or quadra-trac. 231, 242, or the 249. The Grand Cherokee from 1999-2004 had the 247 transfer case they still had selec-trac as an option as well....but the 247 full time 4WD system was more common...and the 247 was used with the quadra-trac and quadra-drive systems...quadra-drive added front and rear limited slip differentials added. The old Cherokees prior to the XJ had a full time 4WD system or part time system, I can't remember which transfer cases they used but they weren't the 231 or 242 back then. The Cherokee XJ and Grand Cherokee ZJ were great in bad weather, and given the different 4wd options you could pick the one for your most use case scenario. The 242 Selec-Trac transfer case was found in the XJ (Cherokee), MJ (Comanchee Pickup), ZJ (1st Generation Grand Cherokee), WJ (2nd Generation Grand Cherokee), and the WK (1st Generation Liberty). The 2nd generation Liberty also had "Selec-Trac", however it was an electronic system, and didn't have part time mode, it was just auto and low range. The Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator did have a "Selec-Trac" option as well for a while but it was an automatic engagement clutch based system rather than a mechanical open center differential found in the 242 transfer case. Given the age of these vehicles now, don't just look at the bezel on the shifter or by the shifter as a reference to what transfer case you have, if you aren't the original owner, there's a possibility the transfer case has been swapped out, its best to look at the tag on the back of the transfer case to verify what you have...The Cherokee transfer case swaps are between the 231 and 242 a lot of times, if people are modifying them for offroading and it had a 242 they'll typically swap it for a 231, just one less 4WD setting, and in offroading applications you wouldn't need the full time mode, so its just less parts to worry about failing. In the Grand Cherokees the 93-98 models that had the quadra-trac full time 4WD, the common failure was for the viscous coupler in the transfer case that controlled how much power was sent to the front axle. When that failed it failed in a locked state, which turned your full time 4WD system into a part time 4WD system which of course made turning sharp a problem...so many would swap to the 242 or occasionally the 231. In the 99-04 Grand Cherokees the common transfer case was the 247, it had a rear wheel drive bias to it more of a 2WD until slippage was detected type system, people again will typically swap the 231 or 242 transfer cases....with the 242 transfer case getting a replacement from a junk yard is common, and there are 2 versions of it, one being the standard 242, and it'll usually have a J after the 242 on the tag....if its found in a Durango or rarely in a Dakota you'll find a D after the 242....these designate that its a Jeep or Dodge and means nothing otherwise and the internals are the same. The 2nd version of the 242 will have HD behind the 242....this is the heavy duty version, which would be found in the Durango and rarely in the Dakota....the chain is 1/4 of an inch wider as well as the sprockets inside, other than that its the same. Then you get into the differences in input and output spline count depending on transmission being used and the application. I mention the Dakota because Selec-Trac was an option in it briefly, but I've never seen one on the road with the 242, I found one in a pick a part yard once and it was a late 90's model with the 318 V8.

Great video content! Few years back, I purchased a 98 gunmetal blue loaded out xj from a doctor! It has cruise control, over head console with mpg /miles to empty /ambient temperature, towing package, fog lamps, leather powered front seats, and a 242 transfer case! It still has the dealership plastic on the floor boards. I plan to keep mines all stock with no lift. I have 235 Nexens m/t’s on it now. Whenever I wear those out, I’m going with 30x9.5’s at stock height on the original honey comb rims !Keep up the inspiration! Love your Jeep!

Yes, she does well! We had a winter storm come through and I rescued a few people!!! We had 6 inches of sleet, snow, and a blanket of ice! Not normal for our area! I did manage to have time to play with and learn my transfer case alot! I grew up around Jeep’s . On a 242 transfer case, full time mode is like 2Hi on steroids! Keep in mind I had no trouble! I went through some not so bad patchy slippery areas in full time and drove back over them in 4Hi ( Part Time)! Night and day difference! It’s not like a sophisticated full time 4wd system in a AMC Eagle if you can relate! In my opinion the 242 full time mode is like it’s made for heavy rain and hydroplane. I hit some spots that were slick as owl shit in full time and it scared my wife like a horror movie! Came across the same spot in part time like I mentioned in the beginning ,night and day difference! Heck of a lot more traction and no slippage in 4 Hi! I use full time on mine if I’m coming off a iced over snow road and approach a gas station or grocery store parking lot. I’ll pop it in full time to keep the front end from binding and hopping! When I leave the grocery store or gas station parking lots, I’ll pop it in 4 Hi and keep up with the new Power Strokes, Dually Trucks, Duramax, and other big boy toy full size trucks and new SUV’s! Keep up the good work!!!!

You know, I’ve got 330k on my ‘87 XJ, (would be more, but it’s not my only vehicle anymore) and after going into a serious fishtail on a wet, close to freezing road, because I left it in 2H the first winter of its life, I’ve had no qualms about pulling her into 4H whenever I thought necessary. I’d rather replace the transfer case, than wrap the rig around a tree, or kiss the front of a semi. That said, I’ve never had to replace either the transmission, nor the transfer case, and it’s had a lot of miles on mixed condition roads. And the front wheel chatter is more that there is no front differential. As long as you don’t do short radius turns, you won’t chatter much.
@KCars3 жыл бұрын
4WD wouldn’t really save you from rear ending people. That really comes down to your tires. But 4WD is definitely useful when trying to drive in slippery conditions and definitely helps out a lot. I haven’t noticed too much chatter either unless I’m doing a tight turn like you said
@krebgurfson57322 жыл бұрын
4h isn't going to accomplish anything for you, infact it will make driving more dangerous as the front tires are being forced to slip by the engine. buying proper winter tires is what gives you traction, not any certain drive train. xj's absolutely have front differentials lol

@@KCars It’s actually easier. When the shifter isn’t in gear, it’s in neutral. @@KCars hmm, interesting, this jeep only has 115000 miles on it, as far as know it was in 4 wheel drive one time years ago. i know the people who have it and they live in town and never need four wheel drive. i can pull like mad and nothing lol, its possible then that its seized up from not being used. when it warms up i will spray the linkage and see what happens,

Yup it can be used as a “just in case” mode but you would use part time when you are on a slippery surface

Putting it in 4 low doesn’t lock the front or rear diffs. It’s an open diff unless you have lockers
@vs300c3 Жыл бұрын
@@KCars if I put a locker in the front diff is it pretty bad daily driving?
@KCars Жыл бұрын
@@vs300c3 if it’s always on then yes that would be bad for daily driving. You would want one that you can lock and unlock, it should only be locked in slippery conditions when you need it

@@KCars Well, I would be mainly using it as a snow beast, and I'm sure I would get into off roading as well. So basically I love cars and have a nasty habit of always wanting more, lol. Currently I'm planning to buy a W140 Mercedes S500, but I've been thinking about the next car already (because I'm insane), and with how much fun I've been having in the snow with my winter tire Charger, I got to thinking about these again and finding lots of info and videos. I'm probably going to buy one built, on the biggest lift kit I can find, and plow through deep powder like it isn't there. I'm just worried that the part time might not be helpful for regular road driving on lighter snow, as opposed to the 242. If yours works fine in daily winter driving, it'll be nice to not narrow my search so much to the 242. Most of my summer driving would likely consist of the Charger, Camaro, or the Mercedes anyway, so I wouldn't really need more than RWD outside of winter or trails.

Yeah you’d be fine with either one, you just have to be more conscious of which driving mode you’re in with the 231

@KCars3 жыл бұрын
If you’re going from 2 high to 4 high then you can be in drive anywhere below 55 mph I believe. If you’re going from 4 high to 4 low, then you should be in neutral and you can be rolling 2 or 3 mph or you can be stopped

You just baby that thing 😆 mine you have to put in neutral then 4 hi then neutral push down then pull back in 00-01 jeep cherokee. Then in 4 low your drive shaft turns 3 times for every turn of your real diff. Not engine speed necessarily. Just a couple tip otherwise very informative. Your right about going on turns. Then non abs comes with a 8.25 which is different too.

I’ve had a 98, 99, 00 and now an 01. You don’t have to put it in neutral to go to 4high as they all function the same. Infact, it actually engages better if you are moving. You do however have to take your foot off the gas. If you have to put it in neutral for it to engage in 4high, then it sounds like you have a bad tcase linkage
@Lray4x42 жыл бұрын
4x4 low doesn't change how many times your driveshaft turns per one turn of the differential, that is determined by your axle gear ratio. Low range gear is in the transfer case which is before your driveshafts.

What is the 1-2 & 3 gears for ?

In 1-2 the Jeep will use the first and second gears. In 3 the Jeep will use the first 3 gears. Useful if you wanna downshift or use engine braking when going downhill

In 3 the Jeep will pick between the first 3 gears. In 12 the Jeep will pick between the first 2 gears. I mainly use it to downshift for engine breaking and sometimes off roading if I don’t want the Jeep to shift.

If you have the shift lever in the 4WD position and it actually goes into 4WD then I’d say the bulb is just out. But if you can’t get it into 4WD then it might be a problem with the transfer case, maybe a linkage that popped out of place or something else
