Ivan - I used to teach electronics. For the best long term repair you should clean off the residual flux with isopropyl alcohol before putting the heat shrink on it. The flux will keep working creating its own green crusties. This recommendation is from the standards for High Reliable Soldering practices - NASA STD 8739 is the one we used. Having whined now the good comment - your videos like Keith's and Eric O's diagnostic one are excellent excellent. I don't always like the handheld camera shots but your voice over explanations make them live and in the moment.

whoops, not bad soldering @ Ivan, I mostly dislike the gas heated devices, lack of temp control, best bet it watch and touch them with solder, when it starts to melt fast, underside touch the wires, tap solder to iron/wire meet point, watch closely, it will start to melt/flow, move solder to top of wire and iron back and forth following solder ( heat fast, flow good and remove)

That liquid electrical tape, that's literally just plastidip. It's made by Performix, the orignal "Plastidip" product. Works great though, if you ever have to cut a harness or do a repair that stuff is incredible. Bought a car with a shorted wire to the car's ignition coils (they all come on one big pack), the car would just stall out randomly. Took me a long while to figure out what was happening there, the problem was never there... until your car stalled. Anyways it was an exposed wire, I put the liquid electrical tape on it, coated it again the next day, then rewrapped the harness. It sort of looks like someone had the harness apart and they cut the insulation away on accident using a box cutter.

There's Super 33+ and Super 88 Scotch tape... the Super 88 is thicker if you're worried about possible abrasion or just want a little extra stiffness on your wiring repair... 90% of the time the thinner 33+ is the way to go through. Anyways I live in Florida, that Scotch Super is the only stuff that'll stay on for more than 6 months. Everything else just turns to a gooey slime and leaves the glue residue allover and it's incredibly sticky, but thankfully this tape is good up to 221 degrees and can handle just about anything.

@Graham_Wideman7 жыл бұрын
Hey +Ivan, your description of the sensor signals at 1:06 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGaYmaGljtual80 is a bit off, though of course you nailed the problem regardless :-). That's not YL/Grn = ground and DG/LB = sigal. Instead, as the schematic shows, it's DG/LB = Batt+, and YL/DB = signal. A scope across those two wires will show a square wave voltage with levels of say 12V and 12.8V. (This implies hooking scope ground to the signal, which invites problems unless the scope has independently floating channels.) Those odd-seeming voltage levels are the obtuse side-effect of the sensor sending a _current_ signal, which ends up generating a voltage relative to ground owing to a resistor-to-ground in the receiver (ABS controller). Explanation: This type sensor has only two wires, with one side tied to Batt+. Mysteriously, the signal voltage takes on two rather oddball-seeming values. Not zero to 12V, nor zero to 5V, nor even zero volts to anything. So this is almost certainly a sensor which communicates by sending one of two different output currents. The receiving control module contains a resistor to ground, and reads the voltage that results from that signal current passing through that resistor. This mode of communication is known as a "current loop" configuration... current flows from the ABS unit along the "12V" Batt+ wire to the sensor, through the sensor, and then back along the signal wire to the receiver, where there's a resistor to ground, across which a signal voltage results. The sensor sends information by regulating the amount of current, in this case to one of two values. The current loop arrangement has two benefits: 1. Interference from electric or magnetic noise affects both wires equally, with an overall effect that cancels out. So less signal degradation from interference. 2. Makes it easier to design a system that has electronics in the sensor, yet uses just two wires. Almost certainly, this module contains a chip like the TLE4923, data sheet here: media.digikey.com/pdf/Data%20Sheets/Infineon%20PDFs/TLE4923.pdf. See page 17 for the likely connection arrangement. Table 4 on page 11 (IS) shows that the low current is 4.1mA (+/- about 1) and the high current is 10.5mA (+/- about 2.5). And minimum ratio between low and high of x2. (These current signals are in the range of the "4-to-20mA" signal convention commonly used for process control in industry.) Eric has a video kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJmap6iNhcZ8na8 of this kind of signal. Looking at 3:36 of that video, the resulting voltages at low and high are about 0.85V and 1.7V (ratio of about 2). So that corresponds to a receiving resistor (RS) of 180 ohms like in the datasheet, with the sensor producing (permitting to flow) 4.7mA and 9.5mA, which is in the range shown in table 4 for IS. The sensor's block diagram appears on page 7. The "output signal" of the device is the amount of current flowing from the pin 1 terminal to pin 2. In this ABS application the VS terminal pin 1 is connected to +12V, and the output is the amount of current (4.7mA or 9.5mA) that the chip allows to flow through from pin 1 to pin 2. Don't be misled by the label of "Ground" on pin 1. In this ABS application it's the output wire. Control of (most of) the current is performed by the variable current source element, shown on the block diagram toward the right as a circle with arrow. In this application the word "source" might mislead -- it just controls the amount of current allowed to flow, ultimately from the VS +12V terminal through to the "ground" terminal, which, as I mentioned, is used here as the output signal. The block diagram also shows apparently two raw hall sensor devices, whose outputs are amplified. The "Schmitt trigger" is a device to compare those two values, and make an on/off decision. The "Schmitt"-ness means that the comparison is done with some amount of hysteresis, to avoid oscillations that might result if the mag wheel is at some intermediate position where the hall sensors read approximately equal readings. More explanation in the blurb on page 8. The data sheet also tells that the TLE4923 has its own built-in regulator for internal use, and can operate properly down to 4.5V across pins 1 and 2 of the chip (and up to 18V). Adding that to the voltage that the current will cause at the receiver, that means the positive side supply can be any voltage from about 6.5V to 18V, and the chip will still produce the same two current levels, and thus the same two voltage levels at the receiver.

That crusty ass "repair" looks like something a punk would do to add a light bar or something. They just stabbed wires until they found 12 volts that came on with the key under there and wired the lights to the bumper or something. Reminds me, I own a stable of Saabs basically, got a 2004 9-5 last fall... the EGR valve was broken, and someone had cut the end of the harness off for the old one and put the end of an Audi EGR valve on it! I actually used the stock crimped terminal ends and put them into the proper (JPT terminal) connector so I didn't have to butcher the harness anymore than it already was. The last foot of wiring doesn't match the colors that's in the WIS for Saab, but I'll know what's been done to it, I doubt it'll have another owner after me anyways. But yeah since I had to get a new EGR valve there was no way I was going to order it with the Audi connector, I ordered the connector and the valve for that vehicle just in case someone in the future is working on it (and for my own sanity if it fails again).
