There was a Levi edition of the Jeep CJ. My neighbor had one he left at his beach house in the 90’s. One thing that stuck out was they actually embossed the shape of the Levis logo under the embossed “Jeep” on the fender. I also had a friend from West Virginia that had a Golden Eagle two door Cherokee. It got wrecked and he had it repainted metallic blue then all the Golden Eagle trim put back on. Kind of made his own West Virginia University edition. Looked really good!

11:19 not only premium sound but for the 5.9 it is a 10 speaker setup…jeep added a cool soundbar in the back that held two 5.25” drivers and two tweeters. This essentially made the rear 6 speakers a 3 way speaker setup: the 6.5” rear door speakers for the bass, and the sound bar for the mid and high range. A really awesome setup for only a one year production run.

10 years ago I had dozens of Cherokee XJ and Cherokee ZJ including a chargold 97 ZJ limited that I made into a golden eagle package... I never owned a 5.9 limited but I don't remember them ever taking premium fuel although they were a bit thirsty I very agree with the TSI as an unusual appearance package, although the Orvis Edition was ridiculous inside and the one year Grand Wagoneer 93 model was also really unusual

I appreciate the information on Eagle as there isn't much information about them. Out of all the Eagle models, I think the I4 powered premier was the only AMC powered model made as most of them had either PRV, Renault, Mitsubishi, and a few with Chrysler powered engines (420A in the second generation Talon base model, the 3.3 and 3.5 in the Vision). The rankings was fair though it wasn't anything amazing and the Premier was ultimately a failure as they were never able to sell enough to meet the contract for the engines. I think the commonly agreed on first luxury SUV was the Grand Wagoneer. Also, I think Renault is pronounced differently. I would suggest watching reviews from European channels to make certain on the proper pronunciation. Having said that, You're doing great! Keep up the good work. Thank you for the content.

The whole idea behind eagle according to all par was that Jeep especially the Grand wagoneers sold to some of the wealthiest people in the country and they wanted to try to sell a car that would appeal to these people instead of a Mercedes, BMW, etc. The execution of this was a complete failure. If you look at the videos of the Renault model This was based off of specifically the interior and compare it to the interior AMC developed, it explains a big part of why it didn't succeed. The other part was the reliability just wasn't there due to the quality problems with the Renault electronics/parts, ZF transmission, and PRV engine. Offering a base model to this undercut the whole idea of just like you had pointed out. The other models I think was Chrysler throwing what they could against the wall and see what would stick. The most successful attempt was the talon. The vision did pretty good but it was the weakest seller of the LH trio. It's a typical example that the domestic manufacturers can't figure out how to utilize divisions correctly to reach different customers. If they would have sold the cheap versions of the premier under Plymouth who didn't have a full size sedan and sold luxury versions of the premier with an interior more stylish and premium, and A higher performance version available, it certainly would have helped but it still would not be in the same universe as a Mercedes or BMW. If they were truly serious about this, they needed to invest serious money and making a model that could compete toe to toe with the German luxury brands and during that time they did own Lamborghini so they would have had the Lamborghini V8 and V12 available which could have helped them accomplish their goal. Granted this would be one heck of a big risk but it would be interesting to see what would happen if they had put in a real effort as opposed to we claim this random vehicle to be the competitor to the German luxury brands Even though it's not the same wheel drive, doesn't offer a top engine that matches the same technology or number of Cylinder, or anything as exciting.

I was in high school in '87 when Chrysler/Lee Iacocca rode in on its white horse & bought AMC/Jeep from Renault. The top-o-the-line Premier ES Limited 1991-92 was just Such a Freaking BAD@$$ with its amber turn signals & see-thru headrests front AND Rear And those Bright paper-white Wheels!!!!! It looked like an Audi 5000 (sans the wheels), and in 1991 headrests for rear seat occupants were almost non-existent at least in America. I'D LOVE to get my hands on one & do a project if necessary but they're probably All extinct. I haven't seen a Premier in Chicago in at least 2 decades. Didn't see many when they were new. Chrysler didn't advertise much about these cars, though the Automotive Press spoke very highly of them, with a coefficient of drag of 0.31, 0.02 lower than the Taurus and one of the most aerodynamic large cars ever built at the time!!! But the American public just simply DID NOT trust a car designed by Renault manufactured with French parts (that'd probably be Impossible to find today, Even from Rock Auto, given only 117.5k were ever sold plus 21.6k of its cousin the Dodge Monaco per wiki)!! Renault's reputation was in the tank BeFore the disastrous "Le Car" production line that was even more laughable than the Geo Metro 3-door hatch,! Though "Le Car" was Not as laughable as The Yugo (see that scene in Die Hard III)!!! There's a reason Renault packed up & left the American market forever ago.🤥

I worked for Jeep Eagle in the late 80's for a bit, right before and after Chrysler took over. The Eagle Premier 4 cylinder only sold about a dozen cars, most were to employees and I think all but two or three got bought back. I doubt there are any left in the wild now. The car was a mess both engine and trans wise and electrically. We were never told what was wrong with the I4 engine but we were surprised that they even crushed the car that the training center had. The whole premise of that car was to be a low man hour production model, built soley a new plant in Ontario, CA, (Bramalea Assembly Plant). We were given a full tour of the place which was supposedly the most modern plant anywhere at that time. The Premier, and Monaco were solely Renault designs, the only 'joint anything about it was that it was assembled here and not in France. The 3.0 engine was basically the same engine used in so many other Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo vehicles since the late 70's in various displacements beginning with the 2.6L. A version of the same motor was used in the Delorean as well as a 2.8L V6, (Its commonly referred to as the PRV V6). It was a wet sleeve V6 engine that like many other similar motors didn't take well to mass assembly and we saw quite a few headgasket failures from the start. Renault was a complete mess for AMC, the joint venture likely did more harm than good because every last car from Renault had major issues from 8 hr starter replacements in the Lecar to headgasket, transmission, and suspension issues with the Alliance/Encore models. All the way up to the Premier and even the screwed up diagnoistic system used on early Jeeps. Techs hated them, customers regretted buying them and Chrysler felt like they were stuck with them. The Mitsubishi model though were pretty decent, the Summit and Talon were fairly decent cars that gave very few problems.

This is a well put together video as most of yours are but you did forget one special edition ZJ. For their first year of production in 1993 they offered the grand wagoneer trim level as a tribute to its predecessor the wagoneer, it was essentially a limited with the 318CI 5.2L v8, extra plush leather seats and full time 4wd np249 transfer case but it had the vinyl woodgrain panels on the sides. It was ugly in the coolest way possible but they didnt sell well at all only roughly 6,500 to 7,000 units in total, less than half the number of 5.9 magnums so they're pretty rare to find at all let alone in decent shape. Some people hate the fake wood but i think its awesome especially on a ZJ

I sold cars at a Jeep Eagle dealership in the early 90's. Boy did the customers who bought the Premiers hate us once the electrical gremlins kicked in. Also, there was a Wrangler special paint job available then. Gun metal blue and some kind of Army green. They were the flat satin that is so popular on performance Mercedes and BMWs today. A back seat was optional on the ones we were supplied with.

Coming from a country where Eagle was never sold, I actually found that to be the more interesting part of this story. It's also hard to imagine that Mitsubishi had only started officially selling it's own vehicles under the Mitsubishi brand in Canada in 2002, some 24 years ago! Kind of strange when you consider most of Eagles lineup of vehicles in Canada were Mitsubishis! The Eagle Premier is another interesting beast and probably deserved to do better. First examples to come off the production lines saw them badged as Renault Premiers, but was quickly changed over to Eagle once Chrysler had control of AMC-Jeep. There was meant to be a coupe version of the Premier as well, but it never saw the light of day. The Premier sedan had great lines for what could've formed the basis for a nice looking wagon too.

A lot of those Diamond Star motorcars were built at the Belvidere plant (opened in 1965) like an hour northwest of Chicago. That plant is/was completely idle before the strike. The Union begged Stellantis not to close it, but Stellantis said the Cherokees Belvidere was building just weren't selling!! I got a hunch this plant is a BIG sticking point in negotiations, i.e. why should Stellantis build a brand new battery plant in Canada when you have a plant in Belvidere Begging to be retrofitted!?!?!?!?!😯

When the ZJ rolled out in 93 they were way behind Ford and even GM's 4 door SUVs. Then the Exploder got the squished 5.0 HO L V8 and Jeep wanted to win the pissing contest. The 5.9 was shoehorned in there and man were there issues. I joined Chrysler with the WJ and it was a POS... another good video..

The Levi package and options were offered on Gremlin, Hornet and Jeep CJ's. All thru the 70's the Levi option was available on Jeep. I think you're very off base on the idea that no thought was put into the Eagle Premier. First, I own on and love it and have had it since 1989. The Premier was to be the high end car from AMC, built by AMC but branded as a Renault. Let's dispense with the idea that Renault owned AMC, Renault owned 47% of the stock of AMC traded on the NYSE. Chrysler first acquired Renault's 47% interest, then by January 1st, 1988, Chrysler acquired the remaining shares thru a public offering. Jeep Dealers were selling the Grand Wagoneer and very high end Jeeps at the time. They typical customer had a high income and owned vehicles like BMW and Audi and Accura. The price range of the Eagle Premier was as you stated, between the Taurus and Accra, that's not a big range. The Ford Taurus could be very well equipped and could end up being expensive. The Integra was the entr level Accura and it's price wasn't that much higher than a Taurus. The idea was to get the Jeep custoerms to buy a Jeep but also bring them over to the Eagle car brand which was a high end brand, similar to Chrysler. A Jeep Eagle dealer would offer a range of SUV's and cars to high end folks, There was nothing wrong with that concept. The Eagle's launch in 1988 was the most successful of any new car brand at the time with big numbers. It just didn't last over time and of course, Plymouth and Eagle vanished. Conceptually, it did make sense and there was definitely a lot of thought put into the concept.

0:58 - 1980s GM wasn't "terrible", per se. To me, their issue was the insulting badge jobs (which Chrysler did even worse), the uncompetitive engines, and the laughably outdated interior designs. They worked just fine, which is faint praise. Meanwhile, Nissan, Honda, and Toyota were *feasting* on GM owners defecting to better cars. GM took until the 2010s to finally make vehicles that compared well to Japan's, which coincidentally and conveniently declined in quality to close that gap.

Eagle in its early days: Mostly French (Medallion and Premier) and Japanese (Vista, Talon, 2000GTX) - The Wagon was the only American car Eagle later: More American than before

It was said when I was young that every other part on the car'll wear out & die before a Buick 3.8 will. Just change the oil religiously.

I'm a little surprised anyone besides me actually remembers Eagle. Born fairly close to when I was born, and gone around my 10th birthday, Eagle feels like a flash in the pan. At least I think it lasted longer than Geo -and Scion- (Scion actually lasted quite a while! ^^;).

Comparing the Firebird's screaming chicken to the Jeep's Eagle , is like comparing apples to watermelons , two completely different vehicles, also AMC did not have the funding that GM did .

The newer golden eagle looks like they put a committee of people together to decide whether they should or shouodnt make it and they were so unsure of themselves they decided to do it, but only halfway. Needed bigger and bolder graphics. People working there now dont understand why people liked all the graphics in the 70s and 80s

Sadly it had been repainted white and the body was swiss cheese. My dad got it for me in 1995. Not sure if there was a Buffalo on the hood or not. You could still see Buffalo sticker present by each front wheel well where it said jeep. Looked like Colorado states logo a bit. You can find a very small amount of info about it online. My dad redid the body and returned it to the original gold color. Wheels were originally white which we also returned them too. Didn't notice anything else really different about it.

The rebadge era. I felt like eagle was unnecessary. It was a brand full of rebadged cars. Absolutely no identity with cars made from various other manufacturers.

From what I understand, it was part of the buyout contract that Chrysler had to make Eagles, in place of the AmC's and they were supposed to keep this brand, under the terms of the buyout.
