AMC had an "Iron Duke" engine? I thought those were strictly GM.

Since I lived through the 1980s as an adult, I can tell you most of the cars shown here were dreadful. The national speed limit of this era was 55 mph. The EPA over estimated mpg and what you got in the real world was so far off it was criminal. I had a 1982 Mercury Lynx with 3 speed automatic transmission. It was advertised as getting 41 mpg on the highway. The most I ever got was 29 mpg and that was driving it like a baby carriage. After a year and a half, I got rid of it.

I had a 1974 Hornet Hatchback With a 305...( I believe It was a 305). .... Developed a rod knock 😂.. a friend of mine had rolled his AMX... I stuffed the 390 , 4 speed , and posi- slip rear into the Hornet.... Everything went exceptionally well . Boy did i have some Fun with that car . The Unibody started to show signs of tork flex , you know , doors opening by themselves....lol.... The City of Fall River towed the "Legally Parked Car" never to be found again . But Boy , in stock AMX trim , that 390 screwed ..😊

The best car I had was a 250,000 mile, rescued from a junkyard. 88 corolla bare model (with the awesome option upgrade of passenger manual mirror) heck,it only had Two speed wipers, no intermittents. Salvaged title, had to change clutch, replace TORN front seats and sort out electrical and mechanical gremlins. It was the best, most reliable car I’ve ever had. But as most California vehicles, after 6 year ownership, it failed the smog check at some point in which it made more sense getting the $1,500 the retirement program was offering.

I’m back and forth on the Monte Carlo. While I do think that GM kind of bungled the redesign of the Lumina (yes it was more modern looking than the 1st gen but behind most competitors of the era), I do have a soft spot for the big comfy two-door. Maybe they should have just called it the Lumina coupe as before instead of affixing the Monte Carlo name to a car that could not live up to the history of that badge.

Its delphi.. like DELL-fi they worked with them for decades.. probably since the 70s. The radios they made for gm vehicles where the best in the game. Much better than even the upgraded Boise and other big names in audio at least into the early 90s imo. Living in the rust belt they were a major employer in my area.

If you race at local NASCAR short tracks concrete oval stock car racing and race the stock enduro series open class these cheap front wheel American cars are perfect for the enduro racing open class you just strip them down to the bare bones and take everything out throw in a roll cage makes them perfect for that kind of racing on short tracks.

... If you introduced something like this in Australia it would be immediately, and madly adopted by oldies towing caravans... It's a drivers dream, when doing heaps of towing :)

The Chevette was purposedly made bad by GM.Our brazilian car ran faster and had much better handling.Great list ,it teaches lessons to us ,like simpler might be just right, row your own gears, few driver aids ,cheaper insurance, cheaper payments so you have money left for groceries.Cheers

I had a GTP when I was younger, and was apart of a "car club" of people who owned grand prixs/3800 supercharged cars. This one guy had a super nice Regal, and I rememeber thinking that I liked the interior of that much better than the Grand Prix. The regal always looked more like a sleeper car.

I had a 1982 Chevrolet Chevette Rally sedan I inherited from my grandfather in 1993 and miss that little car. While yes it was unimpressive bare bones basic transportation with the 1.6L inline 4 cylinder engine, 3 speed automatic transmission, no power anything or air conditioning and an AM monotone radio with a single speaker in the dashboard the car was great on gas and required almost no major repairs except to replace the timing belt and water pump. Certainly not recommended for highways as it was too slow to get onto the highway from an on ramp and couldn't keep up with traffic it was a great around town commuter car.

I find it funny they're marketing it as some revolutionary thing in these new EV trucks and yet GM themselves had already been there 2 decades prior. I'm glad it's coming back but I would like to see it on regular gas or diesels. The EVs are horrible for towing especially long distances.

Had an '88 Spectrum Express when I was a field tech getting something like 27 cents a mile travel money. 40 mpg, cheap, cheap, cheap! Last set of tires cost about 20 bucks each out the door. Traded it at about 140,000 & it probably had lots of life left. Stolen & recovered, run into a curb by a Lincoln making a blind lane change, vandalized by shitheads... it took what you threw at it & came back for more.

MY FIRST CAR WHEN I WAS 15 WAS A 1984 DOGE COLT E. I LOVED IT. CRIED WHEN I SOLD IT. BOUGHT IT FOR $300 WITH 181,000 MILES ON IT IN 1997. SOLD IT IN 2000 FOR $400 AFTER IT WAS REAR ENDED AND THE REAR BUMPER LOOKED LIKE A FROWN (. IT WOULD DO SMOKEY FRONT WHEEL BURNOUTS WHEN I DUMPED THE CLUCH. THE PERSON I SOLD IT TO,THERE KIDS DISTROYED IT IN A MATTER OF WEEKS. RIP COLT. I WOULD LOVE TO PICK ANOTHER ONE UP.

Pretty cool system, however I wouldn't buy it due to it being possibly problematic. I prefer the solid axle, as it is far more dependable with lower maintenance cost. It doesn't kill me to do a 3 point turn now and then as opposed to a U turn. But then again that's me, cause it sounds like a lot of people love it. Cheers from Canada.

I remember my brand new 1993 2 door Chevy Cavalier well! I got it for just under $10,000. No AC, it did have power door locks, roll down windows. I added a Sunroof (used to love taking that out), and added a massive AMP and Subwoofers in the back. I put over 140,000 miles before trading up to a 1998 Ford Ranger.
